Over 700,000 people in Ireland are living and will die with an advancing neurological illness. In 2008 the “Palliative Care for All” report highlighted the rationale of palliative care for people with non malignant illnesses. In response the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) and the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) commenced a programme of work addressing the palliative care needs of people with advancing neurological disease with a focus on Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease and Huntingtons Disease. This work programme commenced in 2013 and first phase will be completed by end 2014. Methods Addressing the palliative care needs of people with advancing neurological disease Early findings and Interventions Next Steps Introduction/context Programme participants expressed having difficulty accessing information about palliative care, and difficulty in determining when to introduce the conversation addressing matters relating to palliative care . In response IHF developed a series of web pages that include prompts for healthcare workers to use to address the palliative care needs of those with advancing neurological illness extract below.
