William PaleyWilliam Paley lived ata time when only thevery rich could afford

a clock or a watch. Most people wouldonly ever see a clockon a church tower, oron a town hall. Manywould only know thetime by counting thestriking of the bells.

    Suppose you find a watch...

Paley said Supposeyou had never seen a

watch before. Oneday, when you are outwalking, you find one

on the ground. Youwould see instantlyhow complex it is.

    Leaves are

beautiful to lookat, and often wedont bother

    looking.

    12/27

    And yet one single leaf...

  • 7/28/2019 Paley's Design Argument

    13/27

...is morecomplex thana watch, andis designedfor the

    purpose offeeding thewhole plant.

    ... Now lets leave leaves

    and think about snow...

  • 7/28/2019 Paley's Design Argument

    15/27

    Everybody likes snow.

  • 7/28/2019 Paley's Design Argument

    16/27

A scientist says:Did you know that no two

snowflakes are exactly thesame, but they are all six-

sided? This is due to themolecular structure ofice...

(P.S. How does he knowthat no two snowflakesare the same? He cantpossibly have looked atall snowflakes.)

    Each snowflake is

    as complex as awatch

Were they not alldesigned by anintelligent mind?

Each flower and each butterfly has itsown distinctive design.

And probably the best design in theworld: people...

  • 7/28/2019 Paley's Design Argument

    20/27

...who come in all shapes and sizes...

  • 7/28/2019 Paley's Design Argument

    21/27

...and who do all sorts of creativethings...

Are we not more complex than WilliamPaleys watch?

The design argument has 5 stages. Use the 5

stages below to summarise the argument in a

    FLOW DIAGRAM.

    1. Anything that has been designed needs a designer.

    2. There is evidence the world has been designed (laws of

science, eye, human body, food chain, DNA).

    3. If the world has been designed it must have a designer.

    4. The only possible designer of something as complex

as the world is God.5. Therefore the appearance of design proves God exists.

    Criticisms of the design argument

In pairs come up with at least 3 criticisms.

If God is perfect why did he create animperfect world with natural evil andhumans who are capable of moral evil.

Scientific evidence suggests creation was achain of cause and effects not needing a

designer. There could be many Gods not just one.

    The questions are:

Like the stars, the flowers, the

    snowflakes, and the butterflies...

... have we not been designed by

an intelligent creator for aparticular purpose? And if so,

    what could that purpose be?
