I told her frankly, "These clips remind me ofthe reality of what is happening in Palestine. I may knowwhats going on there, but I want my heart to be a part ofit. If I disconnect my soul from their plight, by turning myface away from their sufferings, then I become like every-oneelse: do nothing but hope."I was not in search of grief or sorrow; nor was I hoping toachieve a state of constant sorrowfulness. Our religion doesnot permit this. Rather, I was attempting to be true to myLord and myself on the plight of our nation. I wanted toshed those tears so that I would feel guilty not doing any-thingabout our nations dilemma.I was upset with myself for the fact that I wasnt thatattached to the Palestinian plight before. Before, I was onlyinterested in establishing a caliphate, following an Islamicorganizations guidelines on how to do so in a legal andpeaceful manner! Where are the minds of our Muslims? Ap-parentlyits in some gutter filled with other people that seekthe protection of their own lives more than the protectionof those that are being tyrannized by terrorizing weapons.It doesnt matter who you are. If you are aware that the Israelishave been oppressing and repressing the Palestinians since1947, then that guilty conscience kicks in. But for most ofus, its short-lived and we get on with our lives. It can belikened to the scene in the movie 'Hotel Rwanda' wherethe journalist tells the hotel manager about how the worldwould react to the genocide: "Theyll say, 'Oh my God thatshorrible,' and then go on eating their dinners."In America, I would constantly remember from my readingson Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi how he wouldnt even laugh withhis brothers; this wasnt because he was harsh hearted orcruel. Rather, it was because his heart was soaked from theocean of his guilty conscience of, What am I going to doabout it? In other words, how can you live as a practicingMuslim and let this happen? A true Muslim, like Salahuddin,would stand up against the tide of blind followers.Today, most of our scholars and leaders do notwant us to be as such since Islam 'is nothard'. Had someone had said thatto Salahuddin during the Crusaderoccupation of Palestine, he wouldhave turned his head away honor-ablyand continued to work hardtowards his goal no matter what thepeople said. Not fearing the blame ofthe blamers [5: 54]. Our scholars todayare like the ones during his time who for-feitedthe battlefield after hearing about thelarge size of the Crusader enemy. Salahuddin didntneed them, but needed Allh. Later, it was revealed thatmost of the Crusader army disbanded, and its chief leaderkilled in an accident. The Crusaders had no chance againstthe Muslim army.Today, our scholars forfeit the battlefields around the worlddue to the fear of the enemys size and superiority. But toeveryones surprise, its the Mujahideen who have the up-perhand. How many times have the Mujahideen witnessedthe friendly fires amongst the enemy ranks? How manytimes have the Mujahideen witnessed earth shatteringmissiles that didnt leave even a scratch on their bodies?!How many times have the Mujahideen brought despair anddestruction to the enemy with just one martyrdom seeker?The miracles that we witness on the ground are spectacularand truly send us the message that Allh is on our side asHe is a witness to our sincerity of the Islamic cause.We all know that without Americas financial support for Is-rael,Israel would simply not be in the powerful state that itis in today. As a Muslim, I couldnt live with the fact that mytax dollars were going to Israel to kill my own kind. Forgetthat, I couldnt even live with the fact that I was residingunder the greatest enemy today the one who financestyrants and launches wars of injustice in the name of pro-tectingits 'freedom' and live like everyone else. I wouldalways tell myself that if I were to get 'settled down' inAmerica, with a family, well off job, beautiful home andcar and whatnot, then I would have lost my soul and havecommitted something much worse than suicide: I wouldbe burying the truth with every tool in the book, so thatI could live a life of relaxation whilst allowing the Israelityranny continue.For me, it was either hijrah to the land of Jihad or Jihad inAmerica. I could never picture myself doing something elsethan either of those. IRRATIONAL ALLIANCEFor a wealthy industrial state1 with a military budget of$16 billion, Israel receives from the U.S. a largesse toogenerous to be called military assistance. For thosewho are not familiar, the U.S. gives about a fifth of itsforeign aid, $3.7 billion, to Israel, about $478 per capitawhile Israel has a GDP per capita of more than $28,000.Real assistance is needed by countries like Niger andSomalia which have a nominal GDP per capita lowerthan $478.Israel also gets other special deals from Washington.Other aid recipients get their money in quarterlyinstallments, but Israel receives its entire appropriationat the beginning of each fiscal year and thus earnsextra interest. But if you were to mentionin front of them that you are going not to Jihad in the Path of Allh,but to spend a summer vacation or take a course in some worldlysciences, you would see their faces brighten, and they would helpyou with their time, money and counsel, and they would wish theycould accompany you, even if only in your suitcase.
