Letter from the EditorWelcome to the first Issue of PaleoSeti Magazine.Was Earth visited thousands of years ago by extraterres-trials? Was there ever a cul-ture on Earth that predatesall known Civilizations?What seem to be outlandishquestions make a lot ofsense if you are willing tolook a bit closer. Both The-ories are nothing new andwere mentioned on and offthroughout the last century.The Ancient Astronaut The-ory got its real ‘push’ fromthe books by Erich vonDäniken, the first of whichwas his 1968 bestseller ‘Chariots of the Gods’ (Econ Pub-lishing). A lot happened since this book. Research didn’tstand still in main stream archaeology as well as in theAncient Astronaut field. Erich von Däniken has becomethe most successful non fiction author in the world. Andthe reason for that – besides the fact that he is a goodwriter – is that the Ancient Astronaut Theory is capturingreaders worldwide.The research necessary for the Lost Civilization Theoryis very much related to the PaleoSeti (Ancient Astronaut)Theory and it therefore makes sense to combine the twoin one Publication. As such PaleoSeti Magazine is uniqueon the market. My own research in the field for over 25 years has ledme to mysterious and wonderful places all over theworld. I have made many friends and met wonderfulpeople in the on- and offline world; from fellow enthu-siasts to Archaeologists, Anthropologists and Geologists.From those people I know that in ‘scientific circles’ theancient Astronaut Theory is more accepted and dis-cussed than they officially admit.With PaleoSeti Magazine and the accompanying websitewww.paleoseti.com I hope we are providing you withhours of enjoyment, mystery and hands-on research.Within the PaleoSeti and Lost Civilization Theories, think-ing out loud, speculating and drawing one’s own con-clusions is not only allowed, it’s desired.We should also not be afraid to be wrong once in awhile. This is just a logical side effect of pioneering andground breaking research. The famous German literarycritic Marcel Reich Ranicki once said: “Good critics aresometimes wrong, bad critics are never wrong! Why? Be-cause bad critics never draw their own conclusions!” I think the same can be said for researchers and explor-ers. So go out and draw your own conclusions!

leoSeti Theory at its roots. They say that the distancesin space are just too vast for space travel and AlbertEinstein has proven it. Therefore, the whole Ancient As-tronaut Theory has to be wrong.If this would be correct, we could stop right here andno further research would be needed. As a side effect,the field of UFO research would be done as well. That’swhy this is an important step we have to overcome ifwe want to prove the Ancient Astronaut Theory has va-lidity.

Can we travel to the Stars?

Let’s look at the argument that space is too vast to betraveled. Some well known astronomers argue thatway. One of them is the popular German Professor ofAstronomy Harald Lesch of the University of Munich.[1]It has to be understood that from all we know aboutphysics today, the Speed of Light is the fastest theo-retical speed possible. In his Theory of Relativity [2],Albert Einstein has shown this in his famous formulaE=mc2; a formula that is pretty much undisputed.

Many experiments have shown that this formula is cor-rect. If you are not familiar with the inner workings ofthis formula, here is a (very) short explanation:E stands for Energy, m for the mass of a body, c is thespeed of light. Simple mathematics indicate that theEnergy that is contained in even small bodies of massis huge. This fact makes nuclear weapons possible.

Debunked! Unscientific! Ridiculous! Pseudo-Sci-ence! These are the standard phrases one canhear if the PaleoSeti (or Ancient Aliens) Theory

is discussed in official ‘Science Circles’. Pretty much thesame is true for the Lost-Civilization Theory, maybe notquite as harsh. To use the above phrases has also become fashionableall over the internet, especially with the “skeptic-blog-ger” community that wants to advocate ‘rationalism’,which is a bit ironic, as the ‘skeptic community’ usuallyworks with the same methods that they critize Paleoseti theorists for. This black-and-white view of the world led to a generalpolarization of the subject of Ancient Aliens in ‘believ-ers and non-believers’. But is it really this black-and-white? Is the Paleoseti theory really attached to all ofthe above mentioned negative phrases?Is the PaleoSeti theory really “unscientific”? What does‘debunked’ even mean? This article will be an ongoing series over several is-sues of PaleoSeti magazine as I try to answer the abovequestions and many more. IT HAS TO BE UNDERSTOOD THAT FROM ALLWE KNOW ABOUT PHYSICS TODAY, THE SPEEDOF LIGHT IS THE FASTEST THEORETICALSPEED POSSIBLE.

Another effect is that the closer a body is accel-erated to the speed of light, the more mass it acquires. Also the Energy needed to accelerate abody towards the speed of light increases expo-nentially until it becomes infinite at the speed oflight.In his Theory of Relativity, Einstein has alsoshown that time is not linear or the same foreverybody, but relative to an object in motion.As weird as it sounds, this means that time is dif-ferent for an object that travels with high speedcompared to an object that stands still. But no matter how fast an object travels, thespeed of light always stays constant. Important for our purposes is the fact that theSpeed of Light is the limit; nothing can movefaster. According to this, even the speed of lightcan – theoretically – only be approached butnever achieved. A speed of – let’s say – 60% theSpeed of Light is theoretically possible, but re-quires so much energy it is unrealistic to think a race

of space travelers could ever achieve it. So say the crit-ics.The nearest stars are approximately 10 light years awayfrom our solar system. But many stars are millions andbillions of light years away. So the critics’ thought ex-periment is this: Let’s say we could find a star which has a planet aroundit that could harbor life, and that star is 50 light years

away. Even if we could somehow achieve 10% of thespeed of light, it would take us 500 years to get thereand 500 years back. So – they conclude - missions tothe stars are impossible. Case closed.Is it really that simple? Of course not! The solution tothe problem is surprisingly easy, once you stop think-ing in small 20th and 21st century terms. Modern explorers are usually lonely creatures. Expedi-tions mean many weeks and sometimes month oryears away from family and friends. As much as wewant to explore, we want to come back as well. That’sjust human nature. But what if we could take every-thing that is dear to us on the trip as well? Friends,family, the record collection and Fluffy the cat. Thelonging of coming back to earth wouldn’t be quite asbad.And what if you could take it one step further. Howabout taking Earth with you as well?

Generation Spaceships

In the 1970s, NASA came up with exactly this concept.They called it ‘Generation Spaceships’NASA picked up on an idea that science fiction writersproposed as early as 1933 in the Novel ‘When WorldsCollide’ [3] where the idea of an ‘interstellar ark’ wasborn. Generation Spaceships are basically extremely large

Spaceships, that are completely self suffi-cient. They are basically small planets orbiospheres with different climate zones,housing for the inhabitants, farms andeverything else we would need for ourdaily lives. The ship’s concept is that manygenerations of humans will live, love anddie on them before they reach their desti-nation. With generation spaceships dis-tances become meaningless, as it’s only amatter of time before they reach theirdestination. The challenge is that the first generationsof space travelers have to accept that theywon’t reach their destination. In particularthe first generation has to be a special ‘kind of humanbeing’ with a certain mindset. The second generationwill already only know the spaceship’s surroundings astheir reality. The home planet is already only a memoryand daily life on such a ship would be second natureto them.On this ship the traveled distance wouldn’t be meas-ured in light years anymore, but in generations ofspace travelers. If we consider the average generationwith 25 years, and the traveling speed of the spaceshipwith the above mentioned 10% of the speed of light,a star system that is 50 light years away could bereached in 20 generations. 30 years ago - in the early 1980s - an argument fromskeptics was that even if we could travel to the starswith generation spaceships, it would be extremely un-likely that we would come across Earth like planets. Inhis 1985 book “Habe ich mich geeirrt?” [4] (only avail-able in German), PaleoSeti Author Erich von Dänikencountered this statement that in the future technologywould progress so far that we are able to find potentialEarth like planets right from Earth. This way we wouldpick out specifically where we would go. Only 27 yearslater, in 2012, von Däniken’s prediction came true. Thepublication “Science World Report” announced theheadline “Earth 2.0 within grasp with potential candi-dates just 12 light years away”. [4] Not only did planethunters (a new branch of astronomy) find Earth likeplanets, but they are ‘only’ 12 Light years away, a dis-tance that would be no problem for a generationspaceship, as ‘only’ 4 generations of space travelers

would be needed to get there. It is very clear that social life on a generation spaceshipwould face numerous challenges. No spaceship at anysize could be a full replacement for a whole planet. Itis pretty logical that such a society would have verystrict and specific rules and regulations.

Biosphere 2

In the late 1980s and early 1990s a project - or betteran experiment – called Biosphere 2 was launched inthe desert of Arizona. A joint venture was founded tocreate a fully contained, self sustaining and independ-ent biosphere. The research facility is over 3 acres insize and features several climate zones as well as livingquarters for several ‘Bionauts’ as the researchers calledthemselves. Two long term experiments were launchedin the facility. The first from 1991 to 1993 included acrew of 8 scientists who where sealed into the facility.Overall, the first experiment was a big success and thescientists learned about the challenges of such a con-tained environment are in a practical day to day modeof operation. The biggest problem that eventually ledto a break of the seal was a drop in the oxygen levelthat was finally traced to the concrete used in the fa-cility. After 16 months of sealed operation, pumping inmore oxygen was needed.[5] and [6]The second mission was running for 10 month and wastechnologically a complete success. The reason this ex-periment was canceled after this time was a severe dis-pute in upper management of the facility and had

nothing to do with the experiment itself. [5,6]Today, the research facility is owned by the Universityof Arizona and anybody interested can visit it and geta glimpse of what a generation spaceship on asmall scale could look like. While our own society is not yet ready socially –despite facebook and twitter ;) - to make the stepinto space, we are getting closer technologically.If humanity would put their mind to it, I believewe would be ready in 100 years to build a fullyfunctional generation spaceship. Humanity’s un-predictable mindset is a different matter.In my opinion, generation spaceships are the bestoption to reach out to the stars in the foreseeablefuture. But they are not the only concept for in-terstellar space travel.

Project Daedalus, Icarus and other concepts

In the 1970s the British Interplanetary Society conducted a study for the construction for aspacecraft that was able to reach another star sys-tem within a human life time. Although un-manned, the starship that was designed wascalled project Daedalus. The famous astronomerCarl Sagan was the first to publicize the study in hisbook “Cosmos” [7] which was also a popular TV-Seriesin 1980.

The ship was designed to reach nearby star systemswithin 50 years. For that, it had to achieve about 10-15% of the speed of light. The idea was to use nuclear

fusion as a propulsion method. In the 1970s, it wascommonly believed that nuclear fusion could beachieved by the turn of the century. We are not quitethere yet, but recent successes in nuclear fusion re-search are promising.Project Daedalus was always interesting as it was a se-rious attempt for designing an Interstellar spacecraftthat could explore within a human lifetime. This criteriaseem to be very important to many Scientists. Similarto project Daedalus for which development seized in1978, is Project Icarus. Still in development today bythe team of the Icarus Interstellar Organization. Other Interstellar space travel concepts include ex-tending the human lifespan or suspended animation.For the last 300 years progress in science and technol-ogy already extended the average human lifespanfrom 50 to 75 years. So we can assume that in the nearfuture the human life span could easily average 100years or more. Cryonic preservation research is also in

the Spanish. Over hundreds of years the Inca wallsproved to be vastly superior during earthquakes, whichis an interesting fact by itself. Nobody really knowshow old Cusco really is. What we do know is that itused to be the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, theplace where the mythical sun god and afterwards allthe Inca (the name for the king-rulers) resided. On their way to the main square, right in the heart ofthe city center, tourists walk right by the fantastic Incawalls that are built with a precision that stuns evenpeople not at all interested in archaeology. The stonesin the walls are put together with such accuracy, thatnot even a credit card will fit between the grooves. Ifthe stones would be perfect rectangles, it would be al-ready an extraordinary feat, but the basic naturalshapes of the stones has been preserved and modified

in a way that the stones still fit per-fectly into each other. One of themost famous stones of the old townin Cusco – and a certain stop withany city tour – is the 12 sided stonein the middle of one of the walls(Photo 04).

This method ofconstruction is ex-tremely complexand requires askill level thatleaves eventoday’s stone ma-sons with theirmodern toolsspeechless. Thequestion is whythe Inca went

through such painstaking accuracy to buildtheir walls if ‘lesser’ walls would have done thejob just as well. Did they know about their wall’searthquake proofing capabilities? If so, how didthey acquire the knowledge? If it would be ‘trialand error’, would it not be logical to assumethat other people in earth quake zones in otherparts of the world would have developed simi-lar walls?

The Temple of the Sun

The most precise Inca walls were discovered inwhat is now called the Convent of SantoDomingo (Photo 05). The Temple there is called‘Qorikancha’ or ‘Temple of the Sun’ and was theholiest site of the Inca people. The stone works

in this temple are amazing, yet a completely differentstyle compared to the walls I talked about earlier.Everything in here is straight, rectangular and amaz-ingly precise. The most puzzling pieces in here are wallcut-outs that look very technical if you look at themwith a modern eye. One of them resembles a moderntime safe (Photo 06),which of course it was not.Upon closer inspection itbecomes evident how inte-grate the workmanship ishere. There are holesdrilled through the rockand grooves with sharpedges carved out. Some ofthe holes in this niche aredrilled through to the otherside of the wall.Modern contractors wouldclassify these holes andgrooves as cable channels(Photo 07). Today, in everycountry where houses arebuilt with stone, brick andmortar you can see almostidentical building technology, if electricity or network-

ing is involved (Photo08). Was this building calledthe ‘Temple of the Sun’because electricity andlight was involved here?During a visit of the‘Temple of Sun’ you cansee remains of thisbuilding technology inmany corners of thetemple, carelessly com-piled by the officials.Nobody really pays at-tention. But in fact thoseloose stones show thatin ancient times thewhole temple was builtusing this type of con-struction.

Saqsayhuaman

A ten minute taxi ride from Cusco’s City Center willbring you to the ancient Inca fortress of Saqsayhua-man. The taxi drivers will usually let you out at themain entrance to the site. As soon as you come aroundthe corner and enter the vast site, it will leave youspeechless. A travel guide (that has nothing to do withPaleoSeti) describes Saqsayhuaman with the followingwords:“...but whoever saw the gigantic walls – built with gi-gantic stones, weighing many tons and fit into eachother perfectly - withtheir own eyes, is justsimply overwhelmed. Atfirst sight the fortressSaqusayhuaman seemsto be a creation of theTitans built during thedawn of humankind. Thelower wall - approx.600m long - is the mostfascinating I have everseen in stone walls. Howthe ancients transportedthe stones – the biggestis 9x5x4m and weighs350 tons - is still a mys-tery" [1]These words describethe site very accurately.The basic construction

of the walls here is the same as one can see in Cusco,which lies about 400m below Saqsayhuaman. Whatwas impressive down there, is repeated here but on a

completely different scale. The stones here are sohuge, it is hard to believe somebody was able to trans-

port them, let alone carve them in a way that thestones fit together so perfectly. Even close up the vis-itor has a hard time to find significant gaps betweenthe stones. This is especiallyimpressive after all this timeand many earthquakes. Pho-tos only do the stones justiceif the viewer has a scale. Forexample a person is standingin front of them (Photo 10,previous page). The walls of Saqsayhuamanare mentioned a few times inthe chronicles of the Spanishconquistadors. Those descrip-tions are the main source ofmodern Archaeology to deter-mine how the wall was built.Spanish historian Diego deTrujillo (1505 – 1575) de-scribed in one of his texts thathe has seen a room full ofbuilding materials with veryimpressive ropes. [2] But the construction of thewall was not witnessed by theSpanish; only repairs. That’s why we don’t know

who built the walls in the first place andwhat technology was used. But the truemystery of Saqsayhuaman is not the im-pressive wall and fortress, but what liesacross from the wall on the opposite hillside. Many tourists miss this part of Saqsay-

huaman and don’t even bother to come uphere. Most stop half way just to take apanorama photo of the main site. The alti-tude leaves them breathless so they turnaround. They don’t know what they are

missing! Up here the word ‘ruins’ don’t really describewhat can be found here. Nobody knows what hap-pened up here and theories are far and few in be-

tween. It seems that up here, super hard granite rockwas cut like it was butter. Pretty much everyrock, every outcrop was manipulated, pol-ished, carved and cut. Everything seems de-stroyed and chaotic. Stairs are runningupside-down (Photo 13 & 14) as if a huge catas-trophe happened here many thousands of years ago.The rock looks old and weathered where it was ex-posed to the elements, but in sheltered parts the cutrock looks polished and smooth like concrete. But itisn’t concrete, it’s granite one of the hardest rock towork on this side of precious stones! For many hoursyou can walk here, through a labyrinth of stone forma-tions that has been carved, shaped and formed artifi-cially. There is hardly anything that was notmanipulated.If you look closer at the rock surfaces, you can see athin layer of a glass like substance that covers the rocks

(Photo 15). Suchglass like substances usually form ifrock is exposed to enormous heat. This effect was dis-covered at nuclear blast sites, where fused sand androck formed Trinitite, named after the code name Trin-ity, the first nuclear blast made by humans in thedessert of New Mexico, USA. Do stairs run upside down because a blast occurredhere? Is this the reason for the chaos? Is this the ex-planation for the thin glass like layer on the rocks? Did

Michio KakuPhysics of the ImpossibleAn excellent read written bya forward thinking, openminded Scientist. A rarebreed, indeed. Kaku - a theo-retical Physics professor thatholds the Henry Semat Chairand Professorship in theoret-ical physics at the City Col-lege of New York - exploresin a fun and educational wayall the things others say will

never be possible. He keeps an open mind and comesto surprising conclusions. Some of the futuristic tech-nology explored in this book could be the basis to un-lock our past. Highly recommended.

Graham HancockFingerprints of the GodsThis is an older book from1995, but one of GrahamHancock’s best. He presents a hugeamount of well researcheddata, without being dry.Hancock is a well traveled,open minded author. Hewrites intelligently but heis never the ‘schoolmaster’like so many authors of the

‘established’ scientific community. If you want to reada book that introduces you to the Lost Civilization The-ory, Fingerprints of the Gods is an exellent start. Agood read.

A curious object from ColombiaMissunderstood technology?This strange object from the Tolima culture inColombia can be seen in the Metropolitan Mu-seum of Art in New York City. Classified as a‘mythological being’, it shows at first glimpsethe torso and head of an animal with feet, clawsand a snout with bearing teeth. But what animalhas such a complex tail and horns? Did the artistsee something he/she couldn’t understand?Was the animal torso just a way to describe thepower that was coming from this object? In factthe rear end looks very much like an exhaustsystem of some sort and in between the exhaust pipes, a seat with a backrest. The ‘horns’ on the head feature ahandle, very similar to a modern motorcycle.

There are already companiesthat offer their services to deep freeze bodies in thehope that sometime in the future we will have thetechnology to heal the disease the individual diedfrom. While today, this technology is considered ex-perimental and the public smiles at people that buyinto this, there is a very logical idea behind it thatcould be used in the future to make Interstellar spacetravel possible. The goal of the Icarus Interstellar Organization is tolaunch an interstellar spaceship by the year 2100.If they reach that goal in time or not, it won’t matter inthe great scheme of things. What’s important to knowis the spirit of human exploration and ingenuity is aliveand well. It is not a matter of if we will ever travel tothe stars, it’s when. History has proven one thing: Thenay sayers are never correct. Manned Space travel willbe possible for us and it has been done before by oth-ers. So the answer to our original question “Can we travelto the stars?”, is a clear Yes!
