PAL/CCE LTER and CIP Participation LTER Social Science Workshop August 3-5, 2005, Athens, GA Organizers: Ted Gragson (CWT), Morgan Grove (BES); Charles Redman (CAP); Dan Childers (FCE) 23 of 26 LTER sites represented Vision: The LTER Planning effort envisions ecologists and social scientists working as equal partners in the LTER Network of the future. Goal: Prepare NSF presentation for September 2005. Tasks: -site survey to assess the existing social science disciplinary capacity within the Network and to determine the long-term goals and criteria for success -consider guidelines for social science inquiry in the LTER presented by Redman, Grove and Kuby intended to parallel the core biophysical research guidelines used at LTER sites since the beginning of the program -consider social science in the LTER Network of the future - consider social science questions for a research agenda Participant Ongoing Interests: historical imperatives and decision making; land-use change; emerging diseases; landscape ethnography; social landscape; recreational land-use; social survey of community; mobile people land claims; sociology of science and collaboration; social informatics; effectiveness of international agreements; anthropology; stakeholder identification; water use surveys; survey research -public perceptions; policy analysis; technical transfer to policy; environmental place narratives; residence surveys; recreational use mapping; conflict research PAL/CCE LTER and Comparative Interoperability Project Participation Representative: Karen Baker Area of Interest: Sociotechnical Informatics Suggested Question: What are the processes by which local knowledge is represented in LTER data?
