A blood test without bleeding
Executive Summary:
Blood tests are a luxury that as Pakistani we may take for granted. However, doing blood work is
an extremely complicated procedure with many steps and very expensive machinery. As a result,
less fortunate countries cannot have the luxury of these devices and many people die from it.
Introduction:
What Is Anemia?
Anemia is a condition in which your blood has a lower than normal number of red blood cells.
Anemia also can occur if your red blood cells don’t contain enough hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is
an iron-rich protein that gives blood its red color. This protein helps red blood cells carry oxygen
from the lungs to the rest of the body. If you have anemia, your body doesn’t get enough oxygen-
rich blood. As a result, you may feel tired or weak. You also may have other symptoms, such as
shortness of breath, dizziness, or headaches. Severe or long-lasting anemia can damage your
heart, brain, and other organs in your body. Very severe anemia may even cause death. Anemia
is a condition that can be easily controlled and cured with iron tablets and a few other
inexpensive pills, but in some parts of the world, mainly Pakistan urual area, Africa and Southern
Asia, people have no way of finding out if they have anemia or not. Majid Ali is an engineer and
he took a trip to Azad Kashmir to meet with a doctor. Upon his arrival Majid found the doctor in
a gloomy mood and after a few questions the doctor told him that he witnessed a mother die
while trying to birth a child, the child died as well, all because of partum hemorrhage that is
caused by anemia.
Approaches and Results:
Struck by the doctor’s story Majid set out to find a way to prevent such deaths by creating a
device that does not need to use needles because needles are only used to extract blood and that
would not work because people in poor countries do not have the machines to analyze blood
samples. It would also have to be small for the medics in villages to carry in their medical kits
and it would have to be easy to use for the medics who do not know how to operate technical
equipment. After many time he and his team created the idea to create a PakHB Quik to analyze
the level of hemoglobin and oxygen in the blood as well as blood pressure. All you have to do is
put the clip on the patient’s finger and flick a switch, after twenty seconds the devise brings up
the amounts and the nurse can diagnose the patient. The PakHB Quick uses 3 forms of light and
measures the light that goes through the finger, reflected back from the finger, and the light
absorbed by the finger.
Conclusion:
I believe this is an amazing feat and how our technology is so advanced. This device will help
save many lives. Amazing what we can do when people put their heads together. Measuring light
seems like a far-fetched idea, but Majid and his team found that it would be the best way to
found out about the blood instead of needles.
Implications and Recommendations:
This is a great innovation idea that could definitely be implemented into our hospitals today. This
research will make the world a better place and cannot wait to see the outcome of this invention.
This Device find following things in blood:
Level of hemoglobin
Blood pressure
Level of Red/White cell
Oxygen level
