Paint and varnish are everywhere around us.
In the home alone, there are hundreds of examples
of painted surfaces: kitchen cabinet doors, furniture, flooring, ceilings, refrigerators, toys. Butpaint is not just for making things beautiful andgiving out signals. It is just as much a matter of protecting the various products.
When choosing a paint it is important to considerits lifespan. The colour system has to last a longtime and you don’t want a paint that will soon needchanging because it has become unfashionable. It
is also important to factor in the financiallysustainable aspect of surface treatment
or painting

Major components of
paints1. Pigments/dyes: texture, color & toughness
2. Binder: film forming component for durbility,
toughness& flexibility3. Solvent: curing property & viscosity of paints
4. Additives: special properties- used in verysmall quantities(optional)

Methods of application
Dry: powder coating
Liquid: painted with paint brush.
Different types of paints:
ØPrimer: protective layer before final painting
ØEmulsion: exterior and interior
ØVarnish: transparent protective coating
ØWood satin: adds color without surface coating
ØLacqure: applied on varnish for hard durable
finish

LIFE CYCLE OF PAINTSLCAs can be used as a tool in identifying the
factors – raw materials, manufacture, use of transportation and waste – by which a product
has its greatest impact on the environment.
The “Lifecycle Assessment of Paint” has threeobjectives.
• To build up a knowledge
database about paint
and its raw materials.
• To disseminate knowledge

Major drawbacks of
paintsFailure of a paint
The main reasons of paint failure after
application on surface are theapplicator and improper treatment of
surface. While there have been
cases of paint also, but they are but rare.
Application Defects can be attributed to:
Dilution
Contamination

Paint is a recyclableLatex paint is collected at collection
facilities and shipped to paint-recyclingfacilities.
How paint is recycled
There are many ways that paint canbe recycled. Most often, the highest quality of
latex paint is sorted out and turned back intorecycled paint that can be used. Recycledpaint is environmentally preferable to newpaint, while still maintaining comparable
quality. In many cases, reusable paints of the

New product….In three years, buildings covered in steel
sheets could be generating large amounts of solar electricity, thanks to a new photovoltaic
paint that is being developed in a commercialpartnership between UK universityresearchers and the steel industry.
These new solar cells also have theadvantage of being able to absorb across thevisible spectrum. That makes them moreefficient at capturing low radiation light thanconventional solar cells, and so well suited tothe British climate with its many cloudy days.

Use , storage & disposal
of paintsFollow label directions. If painting indoors, pay carefulattention to the mount of air circulating and to therecommended ventilation time after
painting has been completed. If at all possible, paintmoveable items outside. When storing paint, makesure lids are on tight. To reduce the amount of airentering the can, professional painters recommendstoring
tightly sealed cans upside down. Label the top of eachcan with the color name and date purchased.
Do not pour paint down household drains. Many of thechemicals in paint will not be treated by sewagetreatment systems or septic systems.
Do not throw liquid paint in the trash. There is always
