COLD GALVANISING• Cold galvanising is not galvanising – it’s simply the application of

a zinc-rich paint

• Galvanising, or hot-dip galvanising, involves dipping parts into molten zinc

• Both galvanised and cold galvanised materials can last for many years if protected by an additional paint layer

• When painting with cold galvanising paint, ensure complete surface coverage

• Even though galvanising inhibits corrosion of the underlying steel, rusting will be inevitable, especially if the local rainfall is at all acidic in nature, or the material is near a marine area

PAINTING WITH ROLLERS• Before painting, prepare the surface carefully by smooth sanding and

thorough cleaning. Prepare the roller by washing it in warm soapy water to remove any loose fi bres, making sure to thoroughly rinse and dry it.

• Half fi ll the tray with paint and dip the roller in it. Lift the roller out and roll it down the sloped grating two or three times, making sure that you don’t go back into the paint. Dip the roller into the paint again and roll it on the grating until the roller has an even coat of paint on it. Ensure that the roller is not overloaded with paint, as it will slide and drip, leaving an uneven coat.

• Begin painting by using diagonal strokes, making sure that the roller doesn’t dry out. Finish off each application with slightly overlapping vertical strokes.
