Our Governing BodyA Foundation Board of Directors, consisting of up to 30 volunteer members, has general oversight of the business affairs and management of the Foundation. Several of these members have been on the Board since its inception.

The Board of Directors appoints an Executive Committee of 9 members which includes the current President and immediate past President of the Foundation. The

current President of the Foundation serves as the Chair of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee, at its pleasure, may invite others to attend meetings on a regular basis or special event basis. Individuals typically invited on a regular basis are the Executive Director, Medical Director of the Cancer Center and a recording Secretary.

The Board of Directors contracts with qualified physicians(s) to provide medical services for Cancer Center patients. The Board appoints one physician to act as the Medical Director. The Medical Director is responsible for the supervision of the medical staff and patient-care decisions. The Executive Director is an employee of the

Foundation appointed by the Board to oversee the day-to-day management of the Cancer Center and supervise its employees.

In 1979, a group of local citizens met and with the assistance of the community, incorporated and raised the funds to construct our first facility. The corporate name is officially Community Cancer Foundation. We are a non-profit organization, doing business as the Community Cancer Center. To keep pace with the most recent advancements in cancer treatment, we opened our new 39,000 square foot, state of the

art, comprehensive cancer facility in June 2009.

The purpose of the Community Cancer Center Foundation is to construct, maintain and operate an outpatient facility for the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of persons afflicted with cancer or related diseases.

The Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes.

Our mission is to assist, encourage, promote and advance the best care, treatments and rehabilitation of persons afflicted with cancer or related medical conditions.

Our purpose and mission should be carried out in the most pleasant manner possible, being aware that many of our patients are terminally ill.

CCC Board of Trustee since 1996

Sherry retired after working in the insurance industry for 19 years. She has two children and four grandchildren. Sherry currently volunteers at Mercy Medical Center. She had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment at the time she was nominated to serve on the CCC board. Over the years, Sherry has donated her time and energy for various causes related to finding a cure

for cancer. The news of many breakthrough treatments coming from OHSU encourages Sherry that we are very close to a cure for this dreaded disease.

Ryan, a lifelong resident of Douglas County, joined the board in 2007. He has served on the executive committee since 2009 and had the honor of serving as president from 2010 to 2012. Having experienced the effects of cancer with many of his family members and friends, the mission of CCC is an especially personal one to Ryan. He and his wife Stefanie have been married for 12 years

and have two rambunctious boys, Jackson, 7 and Tyler, 5.

Paul graduated from Roseburg High School in 1979. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Oregon in 1984. As the owner of Paul L. Bentley, Architect in Roseburg, he had the honor of being chosen to design the new facility for CCC. In addition to serving on the board Paul is past president of the executive committee.

Allyn has held the position of President and CEO of Roseburg Forest Products since 1997, when he took over leadership of the company from his father and company founder, Kenneth Ford. Allyn began his career with RFP in 1968. He has held a number of leadership positions in the Oregon forestry community and participates in a number of charitable and business organizations. Allyn now serves on the Board of Higher Education. He received

his Bachelor of Science degree in industrial administration from Yale in 1964 and his Master’s in Business Administration from Stanford in 1966.


Neal graduated from Sutherlin High in 1981 and Oregon State University in 1986.He has worked in the banking industry for 32 years, the last 18 for Umpqua Bank. His current position is Executive Vice President/Regional Executive, leading all facets of Community Banking for 40 stores in Southwest Oregon.


Trent was born and raised in Winston and this is also where he is raising his family. He graduated from Douglas High School and has coached football, strength and conditioning for the last 6 years. In 2009 Trent went back to college and graduated from The University of Phoenix with his business degree in 2011. He has been active in many volunteer projects in the community over 13 years.

Jim moved to Roseburg with his family in 1976 and began his practice of general surgery. During that time, he served a year as Chief of the Douglas Community Hospital Medical Staff, and later on the Board of Directors of that hospital. Jim retired and closed his practice in 2002. Since then, he has served on the Douglas Community Fund of the Oregon Community Fund and the Board of the Riverside Center in Winston. Jim currently

continues to volunteer at the Family Development Center as a teacher’s assistant. He has served as President of the Executive Committee Board and continues to be on the Board of Trustees of CCC.

Ron is the UIDC Administrative Operations Officer for the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. He also serves as the General Manager for Umpqua Indian Utility Cooperative, (UIUC). Ron, a graduate of Oregon State University, is actively involved in the community and has served on several boards and committees. In 1994, Ron was named Roseburg’s First

Citizen, for his involvement in the Douglas County Area. Ron and his wife, Mary Jane, have four sons, and 10 grandchildren. They have lived in Roseburg for the past 26 years.

Tim grew up right here in Douglas County with his mom, dad and 3 brothers. He put himself through college and supported his family as a field mechanic until he bought his own business in 1991. Tim has owned and operated Freeman’s Garden Valley Shell for almost 21 years. He and his wife Angelia, met and married in Oakland and are now raising their two children in Roseburg. Tim currently serves as District 2 House Representative

in the Oregon State Legislature. He is passionate about children and veterans. Tim helped the local Harley Club start its local toy run and works actively with the Douglas County Veterans Forum.

Mary is a native of Roseburg, having returned here after graduating from the University of Oregon to raise her family. She is an alumni of the University of Oregon and was also a member of the varsity women’s track team at the University of Oregon! Mary has been actively involved in the community from coaching track at the high school to being a member of various bowling leagues. She has also served on Professional Business

Associations as Director for over 11 years and has chaired various committees for the benefit of non-profit agencies such as Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity.

Dr. Grady is the newly appointed medical director for the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians Health & Wellness Center. She graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University, has worked as a physician in Roseburg since 1998, and has served on the Executive Committee Board for the past two years. She and her husband, Rich, have two children involved in the health industry

and two grandchildren.


Roseburg is Dr. Gray’s hometown. She completed a B.S. degree at Oregon State University, and then went on to earn her M.D. at OHSU. Her internship in medicine/surgery was served at Legacy Hospitals in Portland. Dr. Gray then completed a 3-year residency to specialize in ophthalmology at UC Davis. She has published numerous articles in ophthalmology journals, delivers lectures at continuing medical education meetings, and served on the editorial advisory

board for EyeNet magazine for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She has served for many years as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and also writes examination questions.

Gary is currently an instructor for business programs at Umpqua Community College. Prior to this position, Gary held numerous senior and executive positions in commercial banking for over 20 years. He serves on numerous non-profit boards and works with non-profit organizations to strengthen their financial controls. Gary and his wife Lisa live in the Roseburg area and can often be found working in and around various community

events. He served on the Executive Fundraising Committee for the new Community Cancer Center and was a past financial advisor to the board.


John has been on the cancer foundation board since inception and was the first Board Chairman.

Bruce and his wife, Teresa are sole owners of Automatic Vending Service and majority stockholders in Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Roseburg where he is the President and CEO with executive management duties. In addition, he is serving his fifth term in the Oregon State Legislature, following a biennium as Co-Speaker of the House. He is very active

in the community and runs for fitness and to raise awareness of cancer. Bruce is a past President of CCC’s Executive Committee Board.

Neil grew up in Roseburg and was licensed as a real estate agent in 1973. He started his own real estate company which bears his name, CENTURY 21 The Neil Company Real Estate in 1977. Neil is very active in the community serving on a number of boards and committees and was presented the coveted “First Citizen Award for 2010” by the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce.

He and his wife Cathy have two grown children and five grandchildren which are the highlight of their lives. They both enjoy Roseburg and work hard each day to make our community a better place to work and play.

Craig, a known local stockbroker and financial advisor, is the owner of Jackson Financial Services in Roseburg. He has been a member of the Lions Club for over 40 years. Craig is also a member of the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce, having served two terms as a Director. Currently, he is Director for the Treva Hoffman Foundation. Craig and his wife Toni, a Breast Cancer survivor, have been married 21

years and have six children and four grandchildren. They share a home on the North Umpqua River with their famous “Saber tooth Yorkie”, Reno.

Guy has served in some type of capacity on the Community Cancer Center Board since 1992. He has served as President twice and is currently on the Executive Board. Guy was proud to be a part of the building process for the new facility. As a board member and lifetime resident of this community, it is important to Guy that we bring our local people the most skilled doctors, current

treatments and technically advanced equipment available in the fight against cancer. Guy attended Western Oregon University and studied business. He is a local business owner, as well as a third generation rancher in the Winston-Dillard area.

Dave has been the General Manager at Douglas Electric Cooperative for 25 years, where he has been responsible for the overall operations of the electric utility for the past 24 years. He has been instrumental in the formation of Douglas Electric Co-op’s wholly owned advanced telecommunications subsidiary, Douglas Fast Net. Dave continues to be committed to the local community and sits on the boards of

various corporations and foundations. He also served as CCC’s Board past Vice-President and Secretary/Treasurer. Dave and his wife Debbie have 2 adult children and 5 grandchildren.

Dolores moved to Roseburg in 1962. She is a retired CPA who had a personal practice, then a partnership with Wicks & Hatfield. She is very active with the VFW Post 2468 AUX. Currently she is the Senior Vice President and has been the past president and treasurer. She is very active in the community and campaigned for funding for the original Community Cancer Center in 1979.

Abortion Raises The Risk of Breast CancerWe Can Do Better Than Abortion

A diagnosis of cancer can elicit many emotions, including fear, sadness and confusion. During these uncertain times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. That is why a host of resources have been developed to inform, guide and support those confronting cancer. To help access what you need, the Community

Cancer Center has created a patient navigator program to serve our Douglas County cancer patients. Sara Martin, R.N., B.S.N., OCN is a certified oncology nurse who is CCC’s Patient Navigator. Her job is to assist in removing roadblocks so the patients can receive the best cancer treatment possible. Once the patient has finished treatment, the primary survivorship issue most commonly cited is feeling “lost” after initial treatment because their daily visits come to an end. The PN can also help patients “Move Forward” with their diagnosis. Sara can be reached at [email protected] or 541-673-2267.

The Community Cancer Center is a non-profit, community owned, state of the art cancer center. We are funded through Medicare, Medicaid, OHP, private insurance, self pay and donations. Patient Navigator/Survivorship RN Program

CCC features two multi-million dollar state of the art linear accelerators also known as external-beam radiation treatments (EBRT). All types of cancers are treated with these units. We also have an HDR (High-Dose Radiation) Brachytherapy Program treating breast and gynecological cancers. HDR uses a relatively intense source of radiation inside a shielded

case with tubes where the source travels to a “dwell” position to deliver radiation to a specific area or cavity (i.e.

breast cavity). The difference between HDR and EBRT is the intensity of the fractions and the amount of days the treatment is delivered. HDR is an internal treatment method needing an

opening into the patient’s body to deliver the radiation and EBRT is delivered externally by rotating the machine around the patient to deliver the treatment. There are

specific guidelines to qualify for HDR breast brachytherapy. Ask your surgeon to see if you qualify for this treatment.

FeaturesOur Services

*Weight gain after age 18 or after menopause is a Breast Cancer risk factor. In turn, losing that added weight may decrease your chances of getting the disease.

We have a Volunteer Driver Program which has been serving Douglas County Radiation Therapy patients since 2000. This program helps cancer patients who have no other means of transportation. CCC is currently

looking for volunteers to help with this program. Drivers are required to have a valid driver’s license, background check and successfully complete a driver safety course. Contact Tammy Hagedorn at 541-673-2267 for more information.

Volunteer Opportunities at CCC

There is nothing like having a smiling face greet you at the front doors of CCC. Our Kiosk volunteers have two 3 hour shifts, morning 9-12 am and afternoons 12-3 pm. We recently opened a 3-5 pm shift. Openings are sporadic in the month. Contact Tammy Hagedorn, 541-673-2267.

Southern Oregon SCREEN is looking for volunteers in Douglas, Coos, Curry, Jackson and Josephine counties to educate communities on breast health. SCREEN is made possible through a grant through Susan G. Komen, Oregon and SW Washington. Angelia Freeman was hired to recruit volunteers in these five counties. You do not need a background in health care to fill this position. The only requirement is to be enthusiastic about educating rural communities about breast health. Treva Hoffman Foundation

*80 to 90% of women who get Breast Cancer have no known family history.

ProScreen is a new program developed to educate Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties on prostate health. This program was made possible through a grant from M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust. Jaynee Germond was hired as the Program Manager and her job is to recruit volunteers to educate communities on prostate health. CCC has partnered with UsTOO and Jaynee organized a prostate support meeting on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 6:30 in CCC’s conference rooms. She arranges for different speakers each month. Ally Gottfried, CCC’s Registered Dietitian will be giving a presentation in October. Please contact Jaynee at 541-673-2267 for more information.

The foundation was started by Treva Hoffman and her sister Kelly Cook. The purpose is to obtain donated tumor tissue from women with breast cancer in order to do research on the samples. The program was originally designed to assist local women with breast cancer. We have now opened up assistance to both men and women of SW Oregon for all cancer types. Oregon and the NW have an overabundance of breast cancer in its population. Each week, 51 women are diagnosed with breast cancer alone, 9 of them will die by year’s end. That is TOO high of an incidence factor. What is its cause? This is the reason for tumor banking. The foundation started with breast cancer tissue and now accepts all cancer tissue. Douglas County Cancer Services (DCCS) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to providing support and services to Douglas County residents dealing with a cancer diagnosis. We have been serving Douglas County since 1989 and are a sole entity governed only by its volunteer board of directors. All monies raised stay in Douglas County to provide needed services to cancer patients. DCCS is funded solely through donations, grants and several fund raisers conducted throughout the year. All of the services offered are free to cancer patients, dependent upon available funding.

One of the events DCCS presents is the annual Tea and Fashion Show which honors breast cancer survivors throughout Douglas County. A small committee coordinates this event which has grown from 80 plus attendees the first year to over 500 in 2012. The event this year will be October 26, 2013 at Seven Feathers Casino Resort. The attitudes of the women dealing with this disease was consistent; “I’m going to beat this”. They are inspiring toall of us.

Another event DCCS presents every year are the Christmas Baskets provided to family’s of cancer patients. A complete Christmas dinner is delivered to the family’s which includes special gifts for those who have small children and/or pets in the home. In 2012 DCCS delivered over 50 baskets. Funding for the baskets is made possible through donations and a grant.

Cancer Survivors Day is yet another event Douglas County Cancer Services is proud to provide each June. The event in 2013 was June 9th, and was held in coordination with National Cancer Survivors Day. Seven Feathers Resort and Casino and DCCS were host to over 450 attendees of which 180 were cancer survivors. A light lunch is provided along with entertainment. Recognition of all survivors is the highlight of

this event. Four survivors were presented special gifts and the Badge of Courage, which is an honor bestowed to those survivors who have overcome great challenges.

A support group was formed in the last several years and meets monthly at the Community Cancer Center which is also the location for the office of DCCS. This support group often schedules guest speakers providing information relative to cancer diagnosis, treatment and survival. The group meets the third Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm in the Conference Rooms on the 2nd Floor.

A number of other services include nutrition for patients who are in treatment, prosthesis (bras, wigs, turbines, etc), and financial aid for travel if patients are required to receive treatment at distant locations.Douglas County Cancer Services is proud to be a member of this community and assist those Douglas County residents in their journey to survive an often debilitating disease.

Meet Our PhysiciansMD, MS, Radiation OncologistMichael is a board certified oncologist with twenty years of experience in an independent practice in Washington State and served as Chief of Staff. He was hired at the Community Cancer Center in September 2011. Michael completed medical school at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and his radiation oncology residency at the Oregon Health Science University. He is also certified in hospice, palliative & pain medicine. Michael is married and has three children. He enjoys swimming and has played competitive water polo.

DO, Radiation Oncologist, Medical DirectorRandy received his medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Pamona, CA in 1987 and has been board certified by the American Board of Radiology in Radiation Oncology since June 1993. He previously worked at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, ND from 1993-2003 and at Centennial Radiation Oncology in Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley, CO from 2003-2006. Randy has been working at the Community Cancer Center since 2006 and held the Medical Director position since 2008. He served in the Army Reserves from 1975-2001 and retired at rank of Major. Randy has been married since 1977 and has two children. He enjoys outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, hiking, camping) gardening and wood carving.

Certified Physician AssistantScott graduated from college with a Bachelors degree in Pre Physician Assistant studies from Valparaiso University in 2003 and in 2006 received his Masters degree as a Physicians Assistant from Arizona School of Health Science (AT Still University) in Mesa, AZ. He worked for 2 years in Northern Illinois in primary care office before coming to Roseburg. Scott has worked at the Community Cancer Center since 2008. He is married with 4 children and enjoys hunting, fishing, sports and spending time with his family. Scott is also actively involved with the church that he and his family attend.

Medical Oncologist/HematologistDr. Ottenheimer, an Oncologist/Hematologist provider with more than 20 years’ experience in this field of medicine, is currently working as an independent provider for Umpqua Medical, P.C.. His office is located on the second floor of the CCC in suite 200.In addition to Board Certifications in Internal Medicine and Oncology, Dr. Ottenheimer received his MD from the University of Nevada School of Medicine and performed his residency at University of California, Irvine and Long Beach, VA Medical Center. Dr. Ottenheimer is also a Healthgrades Recognized Doctor.

Medical OncologistDr. Joshua M. Weese recently moved to Roseburg from Oklahoma City, OK to establish his practice in Medical Oncology and Hematology. He has a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from Southern Nazarene University and a Master of Business Administration degree from LeTourneau University. After his mother’s diagnosis with a rare, terminal lung disease, he began working at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in preparation for medical school. Dr. Weese graduated with his Medical Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma in 2007. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Medical Oncology fellowship there, as well. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and recently certified in Medical Oncology.

Medical OncologistDr. Stephen A. Williams is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist at Roseburg Medical Oncology. He earned his medical doctorate at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX. and completed his Internal Medicine internship/residency at Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, MD. Subspecialty fellowships were completed in Medical Oncology and Hematology at Georgetown University Hospital/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Williams came to Roseburg in 2007 to establish Roseburg Medical Oncology. In addition to his practice, he is chairman of the Multidisciplinary Tumor Board at the Community Cancer Center, serves on the Board of directors of DCIPA, and is vice-chair of the Umpqua Medical Group.

RT(R)(T), Junior Dosimetrist

JoAnne is part of the dosimetry group that helps develop the computer plans used for treatment. She is very proud to be a member of the staff at the Community Cancer Center and has been there for over 27 years.

Transcriptionist

Sharon began working at the Community Cancer Center in 1997. Initially she worked at the front reception desk, but for the last several years has been transcribing patient reports. Having worked in several other specialties before coming to the Community Cancer Center, Sharon feels that this is the most rewarding of all the medical specialties. “Our patients are the best.”

RT(T)(CMD) Senior Dosimetrist

Bob has been the Senior Medical Dosimetrist at the Community Cancer Center since 2004, and has been in the radiation dosimetry field for over thirty-seven years. He creates the treatment plan that ensures a patient receives the correct amount of radiation to the correct location in their body.

Executive Director

Mel has been the Executive Director of CCC since 2001. He has worked in a variety of clinical, academic and administrative positions throughout the U.S. Mel has participated in numerous community organizations and civic groups including a stint on the Roseburg City Council. A Vietnam Veteran, Mel served 6 years in the U.S. Army as a military policeman. He is married with

3 grown children and holds a black-belt in Mong Su Dom Tai, a Chinese martial art.

Certified Medical Assistant

Marva has been working at the CCC since 1997. She began as a CMA doing front office and back office. In 1998, Marva was able to focus on back office work, which gave her more contact with the patients. She did her Medical Assistant training in Anchorage, AK. Marva is also a CNA. She is working towards her RN degree at UCC. Marva has a wonderful daughter that she loves spending time with.

Staff Radiation Therapist

Lacy was born and raised in Oregon. She completed her pre-requisites at Oregon State University before going on to Oregon Health and Science University where she earned a bachelor’s of science in Radiation Therapy. Lacy moved to Roseburg with her husband in August of 2011. She participates in a local ballet studio and takes advantage of all the outdoor activities Douglas County has to offer.

Part-time RN

Suzanne is an RN who assists with HDR Brachytherapy procedures. She graduated from UCC with an Associate degree in Nursing. She is working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing through OHSU. Suzanne finds nursing rewarding and plans to pursue a Master’s degree. She also likes botany, physical fitness, spending time with family and enjoys the challenge of DIY home improvement projects.

Tumor Registrar

Michelle has been at CCC since 2009, working as the Cancer Registrar and writing grants. She reports cancer cases, treatment, and survivorship to the National Cancer Data Base, as required by law. Michelle became certified as a tumor registrar in 2002 and is currently the only Certified Tumor Registrar in Douglas County. She and her husband Mitch live in a historic home with their

rescue dog, Sprocket and have two grown children.

Ally is the Registered Dietitian at CCC. She has worked there for 9 years, along with Mercy Medical Center for the past 16 years. According to Ally, “The people that we treat at the Cancer Center, going through what is a difficult time, are absolutely amazing and their courage and determination are an inspiration. Angelia lives in Roseburg with her spouse of 29 years. They have two children and have been the owners

of a successful small business for over 23 years.

Jaynee has a passion for men’s health advocacy and believes that it is time for some “Men’s

Lib” in health care. Jaynee and her husband live in Lookingglass. She has 3 children and 2 step children and 4 grandchildren.

Staff Radiation Therapist

Erika graduated from Oregon Institute of Technology in June 1992. She worked as a mammographer and Diagnostic X-Ray technologist for 11 years. In 2002, she changed the course of her career from Radiology to Radiation Therapy. Erika attended Weber State University in Ogden, UT making 13 trips over the course of a year to become eligible to sit for the registry in Radiation Therapy, which she passed in December of 2003. Erika says,

‘Next to raising my children, this is the next most rewarding thing I do.’

RN, BSN, OCN, Patient Navigator Sara was born and raised in Douglas County. She began working at the Community Cancer Center in May 2011. She graduated from Umpqua Community College with an Associate of Science in Nursing. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, UT and her Oncology Certification in December 2012. She plans to pursue her Masters Degree in nursing beginning in

October 2013. In her spare time she enjoys hiking, being outdoors, running and spending time with friends and family.

Patti has been with CCC since April 2012, first volunteering for her internship through UCC and then hired on August 2012, as a certified medical assistant/front office. Through UCC Patti has earned certificates in Clinical Medical Assistant, Medical Billing and Coding, and Phlebotomy. She feels privileged to work with everyone here at CCC. Patti enjoys spending time with her family and many animals.

Building ManagerGlen started working part-time for CCC in June 2002. He became full time April 1, 2009, when the CCC’s beautiful new building was almost complete. The greatest thrill in Glen’s life is spending time with his 4 children and grandson. In his free time he enjoys camping, hunting, and water sports. Glen has a great passion for high school football. He is a volunteer football coach for Douglas High School. Glen is also a huge Ducks fan!

Director of Financial Operations

Echo came to CCC in 1993 and is the Director of Financial Operations. She meets with patients individually to discuss their insurance benefits and alleviate any concerns they may have about costs. “It is important for patients to be able to focus on getting well rather than worrying about the cost of treatment.” She is currently working on her degree at Northwest Christian University. Echo is a member of Family Church and enjoys traveling and

spending time with her husband, Eric, and their four-legged kids.

Scott began his training in the Navy in 1988 in San Diego, CA. His original training was for Radiology, CT and MRI. He moved back to his hometown of Roseburg, and worked at Mercy Medical Center. In 2002, Scott furthered his education and career by attending Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, for Radiation Therapy, and began working at the Community Cancer Center. Scott enjoys his family,

photography, camping, and is involved with the local swim team.

Scott has worked at CCC since 2007. He has bachelor’s degrees in Health/ Physical education, Radiologic Science (Oregon Institute of Technology), and Radiation Therapy (Weber State, Ogden, Utah). Scott was offered a position to complete on-the-job dosimetry training at CCC, and soon after enrolled in the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse online medical dosimetry program. He completed the program in December 2011 and passed

the Medical Dosimetry Certification exam in March.

Front Office Assistant

Tracee joined the staff at CCC in November of 2006. She had several years of medical front office and back office experience in women’s health and feels it is an honor to be a part of the CCC staff. She and her husband own and operate a cattle ranch where they love raising their livestock and pets and, most of all, their grandbabies.

PhD, Radiation Physicist

Hu Zhou came to CCC in 2009. His responsibilities include maintaining the radiation equipment/making sure that it is in good working condition, radiation safety, and seeing that all operations comply with government codes. Hu Zhou has a Ph. D. in experimental physics from UC San Diego. His certification in Radiation Oncology (Stanford University) was issued in 2010 by the American Board of Radiology. Hu says,

“Working in this environment is very enjoyable.”

Tammy has been at CCC since 1999, starting as a staff radiation therapist to her current position where she oversees all clinical staff. She also manages CCC’s volunteer program and was recently assigned as the Program Manager for new grants CCC received. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Tammy received her Radiography/Radiation Therapy certification from West Virginia University. She and her husband Bill enjoy riding their Harleys

in Oregon’s beautiful country side and walking their two dogs.

Kathy feels blessed to be part of the center, helping patients and their families since January of 2006. Having been “on the other side of the fence,” she understands how important it is for patients to be treated with kindness and respect. Kathy and Garry, her husband of 21 years, live in Sutherlin, where they are members of Family Church. They enjoy spending time with their combined families, church family and friends, camping, baseball, cooking and

pretending to be in charge of their chocolate Lab and two kitties.

The 2011 winter holiday season is one that Candy Shipley and her family would just as soon forget.The Massachusetts native was in for a routine mammogram that No-vember when she got the news.“The radiologist brought me into a room and said they found some-thing and that I needed an MRI,” Shipley recalled. “They did a biopsy and when it came back they said it was cancer.”

Her husband and daugh-ter were with her when the bad news was de-livered. “My husband started crying,” she said. “I had to comfort both of them.”The 61-year-old mother and grandmother had been getting regular mammograms since she was in her 40’s. “Nobody knows your body bet-ter than you, so women should be doing their own self-exams in their 20’s. You’re looking for something that just feels

different,” she said. Shipley said there was no real history of breast cancer in her family. “My sister had cervical cancer and she sur-

vived, but she didn’t have insurance and they probably would have discovered something sooner if she had,” she said.The following month Shipley had a partial mastectomy. “They said they didn’t need to take as much as they thought,” she said. She was able to avoid chemothera-py, but Shipley’s treatment included 33 rounds of radiation at Rose-burg’s Community Cancer Center.Although she’s been cancer-free al-most two years, Shipley knows she’s never completely safe. In

fact, a recent screen discovered something concerning enough to take a closer look. “They ordered an MRI, so we’ll see what it says,” she said. “If it comes back I’m tak-ing both of them off. I want to see my grandkids grow.”Two days later Shipley got a clean bill of health. “They called and said everything was good,” she said. Shipley said she was so impressed with the Cancer Center she de-cided to volunteer. “I work with the Douglas County Cancer Services on the second floor,” she said. “We offer a lot of services from wigs, to assistance for gasoline, food and rent.”She also volunteers for the South-ern Oregon SCREEN Program. “There are a lot of resources for women who don’t have the money

for mammograms,” she said. “I wouldn’t be here if not for a mam-mogram.”Support groups are also important for women going through treat-ment, according to Shipley. “There are plenty of women who have been through it before and are more than happy to help,” she said. “There are also support groups for caregivers, who are also under a lot of stress and pressure.”Shipley said she looks at life a little differently these days. “I don’t take anything for granted,” she said. “I could have lost everything and I want my family and friends to know how much I love them.”She said she’s also more careful of what she puts into her body. “I cut back on the red meat and stick mostly to organic foods,” she said.

In May of 2012, Susan G Komen® Oregon and SW Washington announced that they

had awarded $2,018,260 to further Komen’s mission of saving local lives and ending breast cancer forever. The Community Cancer Center has received a regional educational grant to provide breast health education through the new SCREEN program. SCREEN serves the Southern Oregon Region (Douglas, Josephine, Jackson, Coos, and Curry counties), and it is designed to educate women about breast health and the importance of screening exams in rural communities.

SCREEN has partnered with seven additional organizations to reach the women in rural communities. The SCREEN program ensures that women everywhere receive direct education about breast health, early screening and the resources available for mammograms, transportation and treatment.

Community partners and SCREEN volunteers work to ensure that all women, despite geographic, cultural and financial barriers, have access to critical breast health services. Our SCREEN volunteers promote the most dynamic breast health and early screening education program throughout southern Oregon. The Komen promise is to: “To save lives and end breast cancer forever”. This is done by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cure to end breast cancer.

The Southern Oregon SCREEN educational program has brought much needed awareness of breast health and local resources available to the rural communities of Southern Oregon. The SCREEN program has successfully developed community collaborations with the women’s outreach shelters, community health clinics, local service groups, local chambers of commerce and area partners with a focus on early screening, breast self-awareness and where

to seek resources and assistance. The SCREEN Program volunteers assist in hosting and participating in community events and workshops by providing women with the specifics on Breast Self-Awareness and resource information. In our first year of educational outreach, SCREEN reached 942 individuals through one-on-one educational messages. Additionally, SCREEN has completed a combination of 25 community events and breast health presentations throughout Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson and Josephine counties. Often times, volunteers discover that women are unaware that early detection of breast cancer can offer a 98% five year survival rate. This grass roots involvement, in these rural communities, enables the community members to understand breast health and the importance of early screening. To have a SCREEN volunteer present the program to your group or provide an educational workshop is free. A SCREEN representative is available to meet with local groups or organizations and discuss the SCREEN program and promotion in your area.

SCREEN has a local office in Douglas County. We are in the Community Cancer Center on the second floor. Volunteers are essential for the success and continuation of the program. Since June 2012, we have 24 volunteers throughout southern Oregon who support the SCREEN Program and we are always happy to welcome more to the group. For almost 10 years Roseburg’s Wendy Feigel made it a point to get her annual mammogram exams. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 40 and Wendy wasn’t taking any chances.“I think I started getting them (mammograms) regularly when I was 35,” she said. “My mom ended up having a double mastectomy and that was a wakeup call.”Almost two years ago, the now-44-year-old Feigel’s mammogram raised an alarm. “They found something suspicious…they thought it might be calcification (an accumulation of calcium

body salts in the tissue),” she recalled. “They had me do an ultrasound and MRI and recommended I come back in six months for another mammogram.”Time passed and before Feigel knew it, six months had come and gone. “I had great insurance, but I just assumed it would be fine so I waited for my annual mammogram,” she recalled.What she didn’t know was that a cancer had found a home her body.

“They noticed something during my mammogram

and scheduled a second look the following week,” Feigel said. “Then they scheduled a biopsy. I thought it was just routine and wasn’t too worried about it at that point.The call came the following evening, as Feigel was preparing to head to work. “I don’t even remember what she said after she told me I had cancer,” Feigel said. “I asked her three different times what she called it because it wasn’t registering.”She somehow made it to work, but went home midway through her shift. “I was able to function, but all I could do was think about it,” she said. “I made it to my break before I told my supervisor and they let me go home.”

Feigel brought her sister Becki with her to her appointment the next day. “She (sister) really took charge,” remembered Feigel. “It’s important that you take someone with you because you just can’t process all the information. My sister became my support team.”There was no obvious sign of cancer. At least none that Feigel could detect. “There was no lump I could feel,” she said. “It was back toward the chest wall.”Feigel would soon be faced with a decision: remove just the tumor, or one or both breasts to reduce the chance or recurrence. “My mom had a double mastectomy and we did discuss that option with the doctor,” she recalled. “But we opted for the lumpectomy and decided to see what they found after that.”The lumpectomy so far seems to have worked. “I finished the radiation treatments last year and have had two mammograms since then,” she said. “Everything seems fine.”

Since then Feigel has been spreading the word on the need for regular mammograms. “I’m not sure what would have happened had they not found it early in my case,” she said. “You just can’t skip something as important as that. And there are lots of options for people who don’t have insurance and can’t afford a mammogram.”She’s also become a huge advocate for Roseburg’s Community Cancer Center. “They (Community Cancer Center staff) are so wonderful and educated here. From the minute you walk in the door you will be taken care of.”Feigel also emphasized the need for support. “It was the scariest thing I ever went through,” she said. “They were the most unsettling and unnerving 13 days of my life and I can’t imagine having to go through that alone.”

The Community Cancer Center is a major recipient of proceeds raised at the annual Josh Bidwell Dinner and Golf Tournament. This event was started in 2006 by former Douglas High School football star, Josh Bidwell, who went on to fame as a punter for the University

of Oregon football team and later played 12 years in the NFL. Josh was

diagnosed with cancer his rookie year in the NFL while playing for the Green Bay Packers. The story of his successful cancer treatment and the continuation of his football career with Tampa Bay and Washington has been an inspiration to thousands of cancer patients and their families ever since. Josh is an avid

supporter of CCC as well as youth programs in Douglas County.
