“Our Boarding stable has suspended turnout and implemented a ‘hand grazing only’ rule for the Spring. I am otherwise happy at my barn but, don’t like that my horse isn’t out

enjoying the beautiful pasture!”--Anonymous

What might seem like your Barn Manager being unfair is actually good pasture management and healthy oversight of your horse! The lush, fast-growing pastures that have cropped up in the last week or 2 can present several serious---life threatening--health issues for your horse. Laminitis and Colic top the list of health concerns from spring grass. Laminitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the soft tissue of the hoof. Left unchecked Founder can result. Founder is when these inflamed internal tissues begin to separate and no longer support each other. Even with prompt treatment a horse may not fully recover and develop a chronic hoof inflammation as a result.Colic can occur with sudden dietary changes that can affect gut fermentation. Fast-growing spring grass can increase the amount of gas produced in the intestinal tract resulting in significant pain and bloating. Even horses that are pasture boarded year round need to be closely monitored during this time of the year.

High quality pasture is a tremendous asset to any good stable. Not only does it provide a year round source of high quality nutrition but, it adds to the value of the property and gives a horse the ability to free range and socialize. Good pasture management is a year-long strategy that considers how many animals should access acreage while causing the least amount of damage to the plant life.Horses are well-armed in the destruction of grassland. Unlike cattle that use their tongue to eat grass, horses have teeth on the top and bottom and can chew grass down to the roots, killing the plant. Sharp hooves cut through spreading roots to inhibit uniform growth. This allows competing weeds to move in and take over. In the Spring, when grass is most vulnerable due to the soft ground, it is sometimes necessary to keep horses out of pastures to avoid permanent damage. While it might be hard to keep your horse in now, the rewards come later, during the drier times of the year when the pasture grass is still healthy and plentiful as a result of conscientious management.

Hand grazing is an excellent way to begin to reintroduce pasture grass into your horse’s diet. Your Stable Manager will gradually expand the length of time that your horse has access to early pasture over a 10-14 day period. Keep in mind that pasture time is not really considered appropriate exercise and that obesity can quickly become a problem. It is important to maintain a consistent riding and lunging program during these months to keep you and your horse fit! --Lynne

NEWS AT 5

Hi, Dr. Mike:I joked that I wasn’t going to write a testimonial until I was able to ride Junior. Well, guess what, I’m riding him!

Here’s my testimonial:My 14 year old saddlebred, Junior was attacked by another horse and almost dragged to the ground by his neck five years ago. Since that time, he had been questionable under saddle and unrideable the last two years. He was a very obedient horse that loved to trail ride but since the incident

he got to the point where he could not walk with a saddle. He accepted being saddled, but when you asked him to move forward out of his stall, he shot back into the wall instead. He also would step back in his stall if you petted his neck or head. We had him since he was two years old and didn’t want to get rid of him for fear he’d end up in a dog food can. But I sure missed my trusted riding horse. I saw Dr. Mike’s ad on PA Hose Mall and although skeptical, thought it was worth a try. Junior’s first treatment showed lots of readings from his neck to withers and again in the tail area. Two days later Junior let me pet his head while he hung it out of the stall. Hopeful, I saddled him and asked him to walk out of the stall. No reaction. I calmly walked him out into the barnyard and then put him away for the night. Another two days later I saddled him and asked him to free lunge in the arena. He was a little short strided but no panic or buck. About that time I noticed his topline appeared longer and he was carrying his tail high like a saddlebred should. I hadn’t seen that in a while. Treatment two a week after the first showed less readings. By this time I could brush his mane and forelock with no resistance. So I saddled him up and held my breath as I asked him to ride to the top of the hill and back. He did so willingly. Two days later I took another short ride. I noticed along with the high tail carriage, he was “telescoping” his neck. Today I took him out for a 35 minute trail ride on roads, fields and woods. He offered to canter a couple times and it was fluid and relaxed. I can’t believe that after two treatments I’ve got my old horse back. I encourage anyone who’s having difficulties with their horse to give this a try. Junior must have been in extreme discomfort to react the way he did all those years. I just wish I would have known about this sooner. Thank you Dr. Mike!

Something to Whinny About “Something To Shine About”Your horse’s coat needs constant “upkeep” to help it remain looking healthy. Trimming hooves, yearly shots, and a good diet; your horse’s coat should be on that list as well. The first and most important step to a healthy coat is your horse’s diet. That’s right, what your horse eats has an effect on its coat. Proper nutrition is vital to any horse. Corn oil is good for adding fat to your horse and also shine to a coat. Rice bran is also a great additive to a horses diet due to its high fiber con-tent. It can add shine to a horses coat and help build muscle. You will see me mention Healthy Hair Care a few times in this. You do not have to use it, but it really helps moisturize a horse’s coat and adds shine. Any type of moisturizer for a coat can be beneficial. Healthy Hair can be purchased from many retailers. Here are some helpful tips and ideas!Daily grooming ritual; knock off any heavy mud or dirt. Spray liberally with Healthy Hair. Use rubber curry (in circular motions) to curry in coat conditioner. Follow with stiff and then soft brushes.Groom before and after you ride. If your horse gets sweaty, try and hose it off to get rid of sweat and then groom once your horse has dried off. Supplements. Most supplements that have Omega’s help your horse’s coat. Biotin also has this and helps your horses hooves at the same time. Nu-Image is a great example. Another great item to use is a vacuum. Curry dirt to the top of the coat then vacuum the dirt up. There are some made for horses with a long attachment. It is not necessary but they do come in handy. Make sure to spray a moisturizer when you are done. A dull coat can be an indicator that your horse isn’t 100% healthy. Now I do not mean that your horse is going to fall over on you if it has a dull coat. Here are a few things that can help though:

A.) Worming: It is important to keep your horse on a worming schedule. 3-4 times a year is standard. Rotating wormers is beneficial for certain times of the year. B.) Minerals: Copper, zinc and selenium all affect hair quality in many ways.C.) Vitamins: The vitamins that are most likely to have an impact on hair quality are biotin, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and vitamin A.

In addition to a healthy coat, it is also important to keep up with your horse’s mane and tail. A few tips for tails are to keep it tangle free. Do not brush it ev-ery day, rather, finger brush it. Using a brush can pull hairs out and break them off. A moisturizer weekly can also help. You can also put your horse’s tail in a loose braid and put it in a tail bag and take it down weekly to care for it. So why should you groom your horse? The most important reason is so that bacteria doesn’t grow and cause things such as rain rot, scratches, warts, ring worm, and sweet itch. The next best rea-son? The bond you will build with your horse will be un touchable. Your horse will trust you more than ever and appreciate that quality daily grooming time! Hope Dailey HD Performance Horses 724-664-2410
