The funding would be used for a study to develop structural and nonstructural flood damagereduction alternatives in coordination with th e city. Th e city recently experienced th e worstflooding in its history causing billions of dollars in damage. Th e scope of th e initial studyhas expanded to include both sides of th e Cedar River from the Time Check area todownstream.

The funding would be used for providing more than 200 small ponds and wetlands to filter

sediment from runoff prior to entering Rathbun Lake. Project benefits include increasedwildlife habitat in the watershed, an d improved habitat and water quality at RathbunLake. Th e Rathbun Lake Watershed encompasses th e Chariton River watershed in 6counties in south central Iowa. Rathbun Lake supplies water to th e Rathbun RegionalWater Association (RRWA), an d th e RRWA provides six million gallons of water daily tomore than 70,000 people in 18 counties in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. Th econsequences of sediment runoff within th e watershed include increased drinking watercosts, th e degradation of aquatic and terrestrial habitat, decreased water quality anddecreased water storage within Rathbun Lake.
