ON-GOING MAINTENANCE CONCERNS: In a recent six- month inspection it has been determined that a number of the smoke alarms in our church are not functioning to their fullest capacity. Therefore, we are engaging a company to assist us in correcting the problem through trouble shooting and repairs. Safety is always my first concern for all of our parishioners and guests. WHAT DO YOU THINK? As we begin a new parish year what do you think we should pay more attention to as a pastoral staff? What are the real challenges and concerns that people, like you, face and could use some support and encouragement with. Please email or mail me with your thoughts and concerns. I truly would like to hear from you. Perhaps, what you bring to my attention will represent others.

“ARE YOU ENVIOUS BECAUSE I AM GENEROUS?” I don’t know about you but the Sunday Gospels over the past several weeks have been a real challenge for me personally. Forgiveness is probably one of the most difficult things that I have had to deal with in my life. That might sound strange coming from the mouth of a priest but it is true. Perhaps, part of the problem is that I have confused forgiveness with a feeling and focused too much attention on my demand for justice when I have been wronged. I have to ask myself the question, was it really justice I was seeking or revenge? Sometimes when I am watching the news and I hear people speak of how they are seeking justice because of a terrible wrong that has been inflicted on them or a tragedy to a family member, it often sounds to me that they really want or need revenge. Don’t get me wrong. As I am admitting, I have struggled with forgiveness at times in my life. However, I have come to see that holding on to anger and not forgiving another only prolongs my misery and delays my experience of interior healing. My work in Retrouvaille has helped me to see that forgiveness is not a feeling but a decision. I can forgive you and still have to deal with residual “feelings” of hurt or anger, which will hopefully subside in the weeks and months ahead. On a purely human level, this week’s Sunday Gospel seems like an affront to my, and maybe your, sense of fairness and justice as well. Yet the question raised for us to consider makes us stop to think. “Are you (or I) envious because I (God) am generous?” According to the parable, laborers who worked all day in the scorching heat are given the same pay as others who worked only an hour or so. REALLY, GOD! Are we envious because God is more merciful than he is just? I think that we might be. At least I think that our cultural values are challenged when confronted with the “light of the Gospel.” But we should not despair nor think that all is lost. We are being called each day to become more and more like Jesus. And, thankfully, Jesus is not giving up on you and me.
