4D LIFE USA TODAYWEDNESDAY, MARCH 1, 2017
Patricia Cornwell has a theory. The wildly successful author ofthe Kay Scarpetta mystery series
believes she’s figuredout, once and for all,the true identity ofthe 19th-century se-rial killer known asJack the Ripper.
Cornwell explored this topic inher 2002 book, Portrait of a Kill-er: Jack the Ripper, Case Closed, arguing that the Ripper was, infact, the celebrated British paint-er Walter Sickert. She was widelyridiculed; one critic wrote, “Por-trait of a Killer is a sloppy book, insulting to both its target and itsaudience. The only way for Corn-well to repair its damage will beto stay with this case.”
Regrettably, she has.
Cornwell’s new book, Ripper:The Secret Life of Walter Sickert(Thomas & Mercer, 497 pp.,eEEE out of four), a revisedand expanded edition of Portrait, attempts to convince her skeptics
that the case she closed is aclosed case. “One of many frus-trations in this investigation,”Cornwell writes, “is having verylittle evidence of where (Sickert)
was or what he was doingduring any given day,
week, month, oryear.”
To a responsi-ble investigatorsuch a vacuummight seem likean insurmount-able problem, butfor Cornwell it’smore like an op-portunity — sheinvents an elabo-rate, completelynonsensical narra-
tive to fill it, and asks readers tosuspend disbelief to come alongfor the ride.
Ripper opens with characterassault. “Today,” she writes ofWalter Sickert, “he would be di-
agnosed a psychopath, a narcis-sist.” (I’m a physician; this isfalse.) She then suggests Sickerthad a hole in his penis and possi-bly had corrective surgical proce-dures as a child that traumatizedhim; somehow, she believes, thatexperience, which she presentslittle persuasive evidence of actu-ally occurring, transformed himinto a mass murderer.
Of the many flaws in Corn-well’s schema, the most glaring isthat historians place Sickert inanother country at the time ofthe London murders. Cornwellmakes no real attempt to dis-prove this detail. That’s typical:There is no credible evidencepresented that links the post-Im-pressionist painter to the Rippermurders. Cornwell has doubleddown when she should have of-fered a mea culpa.
It’s not all about what you say, however, it’s how you say it, andin this way, Cornwell achieves
modest success. Her brief histori-cal sketches of medieval England,Scotland Yard and the evolutionof detective work are charming.
It’s just that they are overshad-owed by the prolonged attack ona man who is not alive to defendhimself, and probably has noth-ing whatsoever to defend himselffrom. Of his correspondence withfriends, Cornwell writes thatSickert was “not warm or hintingof any genuine interest in theirlives or well-being.” A review ofhis letters immediately contra-dicts this.
Ripper is a fundamentally dis-honest book, one that uses medi-cal jargon and mitochondrialDNA analysis to confuse the audi-ence and obscure the fact that itsconclusions are flawed. Cornwellassumes her readers are fools, unable to properly evaluate sci-entific evidence. We’re not.
Walter Sickert deserves better. So do we.
Patricia Cornwell’s ‘Jack the Ripper’ reboot remains deeply flawedMatt McCarthySpecial for USA TODAY

USA TODAYWEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2017 LIFE 5D
Two months after George Mi-chael’s sudden death Dec. 25, aBritish coroner says the singerdied of natural causes due toheart disease and a fatty liver.
On Tuesday, Darren Salter, thesenior coroner in the southernEnglish county of Oxfordshire, said the official cause of Michael’s
death was “dilated cardiomyopa-thy with myocarditis and fattyliver.”
Dilated cardiomyopathy is acondition in which the heart’sability to pump blood is limited, while myocarditis is inflamma-tion of the heart muscle.
The report did not make clearwhich type of fatty liver diseasewas present in Michael’s body. There are two general varieties, including alcoholic fatty liver dis-ease, which is caused by excessivedrinking but can be reversedthrough abstinence, the Cleve-land Clinic notes.
According to the Mayo Clinic,non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is
less understood, but thought tobe linked to obesity, insulin resis-tance or type 2 diabetes.
Michael, who was 53 when hedied, did have a history with alco-hol and drugs, including arrestsfor possession of drugs and driv-ing under the influence, with thelatter leading to a four-week jailstint for crashing his SUV into aLondon storefront.
After the initial autopsy onDec. 30 failed to point to a causeof death, police took statementsin an effort to turn over more in-formation on the singer’s death, which they labeled “unexplainedbut not suspicious.”
However, now that it’s been de-termined that Michael died ofnatural causes, Salter said no fur-ther investigation will beundertaken.
Michael recently received trib-utes at both the Grammys andBRIT Awards, with Adele andColdplay’s Chris Martin perform-ing his songs, and at the StellaMcCartney fashion show Monday.
