Page 6 - January 16, 2020 - Ozark Horse Trader 417-256-2445 • 844-967-6103 CURRY STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST 111 South Curry Street • WeSt PlainS, Mo 417-256-3925 “In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshaz- zar; and the thing was true, even a great warfare: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision” (Daniel 10:1 – ASV). The KJV translates this verse, “… and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long …” while the ASV reads, “… and the thing was true, even a great warfare …” (Daniel 10:1). Since most scholars prefer the rendering of the ASV here, we will stand with it at this time. While Daniel may have understood the vision in some way, it is evident that the still sought help to understand its meaning completely. The heavenly entity who appears unto Daniel, states, “Now am I come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for the vision is for many days” (Daniel 10:14), and again, “But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince” (Daniel 10:21). The vision then was of a great warfare which was going to befall Daniel’s people, (the Jewish nation), in the latter days, (the last days of the Jewish economy), and the vision was yet for many days into the future (approximately 400 to 500 years – the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD). It seems that Daniel prayed for understanding concerning this vision for three full weeks, (21 days), “In these days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled” (Daniel 10:2-3). At the end of these days, a heavenly entity was sent to help Daniel understand the vision (v4-14). The record reads, “Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou dids’t set thy heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days …” [(Daniel 10:12-13) – this is the three full weeks of Daniel’s fasting and prayer noted above]. Daniel fell to the ground at the sight of the heavenly entity, and was unable to stand. The heavenly entity strengthened Daniel, and said, “… Knowest wherefore I am come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come. But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth …” [(Daniel 10:20-21) and or (v15-21)]. Whether the third year of Cyrus king of Persia (Daniel 10:1), and the first year of Darius the Mede (Daniel 9:1 and 11:1), are one and the same year, I’m not sure. Whether the proper sequence of the later part of Daniel is chapters 9-10-11- and 12, or some other sequence, I’m not sure. We’ll leave this debate to the scholars. This however, we can be sure of: this section of Daniel deals with the coming of the Messiah, the setting up of His eternal kingdom – the church, the end of the Jewish economy through great warfare, and that being perpetrated by the hands of the Persian/Medes, Greek, and Roman Empires, all being yet many days into the future. These are events and facts which are confirmed, both by the book of Daniel, and by secular history, and which cannot be denied! These things we can be sure of.
