The One Great Hour of Sharing
offering is sponsored by
nine U.S. Christian
denominations, including American
Baptist Churches USA,
and Church World Service. Monies collected are used to build
communities, teach skills, resettle refugees, respond to disasters, prevent disease, and
promote hope and health for humankind.
Through this offering, American Baptist Churches are able to extend immediate relief when calamities
strike.
The theme this year is “We are One.” As the church, one body in
Christ, our call is to work together in Jesus’ name. For as long as one
sister or brother is in need, we are all in need.
Sara Hunt, our Minister to Families and Outreach will offer the message.
EMILY REALLY WANTS TO TALK WITH YOU! FBCG friends, Emily still needs to talk to several of you! Pastor Emily needs your help to complete her current re-search project. Every voice counts toward her goal! There are no wrong answers. The process is very easy, and will only last about twenty minutes. Sign up on the hallway bul-
letin board this week!

As we continue to walk through Pastor Carey Nieu-whof’s article, “Eight Reasons Why Most Churches Don’t Break the Two Hundred Attendance Mark,” we approach what I think is one of his most important
points—True leaders aren’t leading. He states:
“In every church, there are people who hold the position of leadership and then there are people who are truly leaders (who may not hold any position in your church). Release people who hold titles but aren’t advancing the mission, and hand the job over to real leaders. Look for people who have a track record of handling responsibility in other areas of life and give them the job of leading the church into the future with you. If you actually have leaders leading, it will make a huge difference.”
Thankfully at First Baptist, true leaders are leading. We are blessed with people who are committed to advancing the mission God has for our church and exemplifying the fruits of the Spirit. Some believe they aren’t true leaders because they aren’t charismatic, opinionated, or highly educated. But true church leaders are people who consistently reveal to their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ what it means to be loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, generous, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled.
A Christian leader is… ...the one who loves when it seems justifiable to hate. …joyful when joy seems hard to come by. …seeking peace and harmony in all manners of life. …patient even when the church lets them down. …kind and encouraging to everyone everywhere at all times. …generous with their checkbooks, the energy, and most especially, their time. …faithful to God and His mission, even when they don’t feel like it. …gentle in their dealings with others, never raising their voice, never showing disrespect, and never letting a harsh word come out of their mouth. …self-controlled, always allowing the advancement of God’s mission to supersede their own selfish concerns.
I am sincerely grateful for the Spirit-filled leadership we have at First Baptist. People who daily embody these characteristics. I don’t know where we’d be without them. However, I know for a fact that there could be even more leaders among us. And you might be one of them. Do you feel God calling you to lead? He may be calling you to serve as a deacon, choir member, outreach organizer, or something else entirely. What ministry is God calling you to serve? Even though we have great leaders at FBC Glendale, we need more. People, despite their
fears and inadequacies, who are willing to take the leap of faith and allow God to use them to advance His mission on earth. Jump in and let God work through you to do amazing things you never thought were possible.
Shine on!

Thanks to the generosity and exquisite mind of church member Mike McCoy, our church will be embarking on a provocative study into the foundational tool for our faith and practice--The Bible. For six-weeks, the class will uncover these three concepts:
"What It Is" uncovers a canonical history/overview, how we got the text we now have, and what the Bible says about itself. "What It Does" deals with concepts of the Word as Living, not merely written, and the power of the Word of God, which "...shall not return unto me empty, but shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." "Why We Need It" presents the idea that we need for the Child of God to have a personal, serious, and knowledgeable ap-proach to regular, focused Bible study, and to develop a study library; a suggested list of volumes to start collecting would be offered. Taking it further is the idea that we are dealing with the Scripture as a tangible yet dynamic representative of the God it reveals. As such, it should be respected, taken seriously, and studied meditatively in the expectation that God is speaking to us as His Children.
