by Benjamin AdmoniusA dream fifteen years in the

making has finally come to fruitionwith the opening of Double BatchBakery, Bayonne’s latest edition toits ever-growing culinaryscene. I first stepped intothe old pizza parlor thatChefs Rachel and AngelHidalgo planned to turninto their bakery back inMarch and I’ll admit that Iwas more than a little skep-tical of whether they couldpull this transformation off,but I quickly learned not tounderestimate the skill andwork ethic these two share. In less than one month’stime, they had metamor-phosized into the sparklingclean and bright space yousee today. Attention to de-tail is everything at DoubleBatch, from the décor to thecustom cookies and cakesto the attentive customerservice you will receive on everyvisit.

Rachel and Angel both partici-

pated in the C-CAP program, anon-profit organization thatawards scholarships to promising

young chefs in major cities acrossthe country. Both budding chefswon scholarships to The CulinaryInstitute of America; Rachel, onenever to be outdone came in first

place, scoring a full ride to theprestigious Hyde Park, NYschool. After over twenty years in

the business and working in everyfield from fine dining to fast ca-sual and online bakeries, the sea-

soned pair knew it was finallytime to embark on their true jour-ney: opening a bakery of theirown and thus, Double Batch Bak-ery was born.

Perhaps the most agoniz-ing part of starting their ownbusiness was coming upwith the name. Wanting toinclude their twin boys, Ju-lian and Sebastian, into thebakery’s story, they settledon Double Batch Bakery.Things are always better witha double batch!

Chef Rachel’s calling cardis custom-decorated cookiesand cakes. She truly has ele-vated baking into an artformworthy of an exhibition at anygallery or museum. Her pre-cision, creativity and execu-tion remain unrivaled. ChefAngel has devoted his ener-gies on creating a scrump-tious array of daily pastries,

both sweet and savory, that have cus-tomers begging for more. His inven-tive creations include peach cobblermuffins, sour cream and onionscones, caramelized onion and fetasavory pastries and an everythingscone that will have you doing adouble take that it isn’t an everythingbagel. His banana cream dessert jarshave already established themselvesas a neighborhood favorite that hecan barely make fast enough. Fla-vors change daily, giving you plentyof reason to make repeat visits andsample the whole menu.

other seasons will be on broadcast televi-sion, too? — Bruce Warren, via e-mailA: It’s a possibility, partially dependingon how CBS feels about the ratings resultsof this summer’s run. Executive producersRobert and Michelle King have said thatediting the content originally seen on CBSAll Access was quite challenging in somecases, but they added that they believedmaking episodes shorter — to accommo-date the CBS time slot and commercialbreaks — made some of them better. One other factor is that CBS All Accessmight not want to infer on a broader scalethat programming its subscribers cur-rently are paying for will be available forfree eventually. As its corporate cousin,CBS also has to be sensitive to that, sotime will tell how that plays out.

By Jay BobbinQ: Is it true that Amy Robach of “GoodMorning America” and “20/20” is marriedto Andrew Shue, who used to be Billy on“Melrose Place”? — Jan Collins, Delta,Colo.A: It is. They began dating after meetingat a book party, and they were married in2010 ... on Robach’s birthday, Feb. 6.Their union is sort of a “Yours, Mine andOurs,” since each brought children fromprevious marriages, Robach’s two daugh-ters and Shue’s three sons.As Robach continues her work for ABCNews, Shue (the brother of actress Elisa-beth Shue) is on the board of directors ofDo Something — a nonprofit organizationthat he co-founded — and he also operatesseveral companies under the umbrellaname CafeMom. Additionally, has hehosted the web series “Mad Life,” includ-ing Robach’s mother Joanie as one of hisco-hosts.Q: I enjoyed “Life in Pieces.” Why was itcanceled? — Julia Platt, via e-mailA: While the uniquely structured CBSfamily sitcom had a certain fan base andcritical acclaim, it never was a ratingsblockbuster for the network, so its four-season run has to be deemed fairly healthy. The fact that it returned so late in the pasttelevision season suggested that the writ-ing might be on the wall — something theshow’s creative forces evidently took a cuefrom, since even before the cancellationwas announced, they had devised a true se-ries finale that set up the futures of themain characters played by James Brolin,Dianne Wiest and others.Q: I’m glad to see that Jimmy Smits iscoming back in a new series this fall. Howmany shows has he done since “L.A.Law”? — Rebecca Scott, Providence, R.I.A: There have been a number of them, andsome have involved his joining series thatwere ongoing. The first of those was“NYPD Blue,” which Emmy winnerSmits entered in the second season, afterDavid Caruso left. He also became a pres-idential candidate on “The West Wing” to-ward the end of its run, then took roles on“Dexter,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “How toGet Away With Murder.”Though it was a continuation of a series,“24: Legacy” also was a show of its ownthat featured Smits prominently. Originalseries in which he also has starred have in-cluded “Cane,” “Outlaw” and “The GetDown” — and starting in September, he’lltackle the legal profession again by head-lining NBC’s “Bluff City Law.”Q: Since CBS is showing the first seasonof “The Good Fight,” does that mean the

recovery that began when she shatteredher right heel, ankle and leg in a scaryJanuary 2018 crash at a Clevelandfreestyle show. Now recovered but admit-ting she’ll never be back to 100 percent, she’ll don multiple layers of fire-resistantclothing, climb on her Indian MotorcycleFTR 1200 and attempt to barrel throughthe flaming boards at what she calls the“sweet spot” speed of 30 miles per hour, her helmet taking much of the impact.“If I go too much faster, I probably won’t

be conscious going through these things,”she says with a laugh, “so that’s the speedthat I think we decided that would be safefor my brain. ... We didn’t want to go tooslow to where the boards aren’t even goingto break because that’s going to suck forme. And then, yeah, to where the boardswill break and I’m not just blowing bythese things and no one even saw me go.”Also taking the blows and heat will be

the FTR 1200, a flat-track bike with a rep-utation for durability and solid perform-ance, which Golden says was modified forthis event.“We did a couple of changes to it to make

sure that it’s pretty much built to gothrough fire,” Golden notes. “We changedthe front end of it so that way all the debrisand whatnot can kind of be pushed awayinstead of pretty much just being pushedat me. So hopefully the design we use isgoing to just divert the debris away fromme. That’s the most important thing.”

HOLLYWOODBy Tony RizzoHOLLYWOOD — Despite the star power of Jen-nifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassben-der, Nicholas Hoult and Sophie Turner, “DarkPhoenix” (the 12th in the “X-Men” franchise)laid an egg at the box office. “X-Men: Apocalypse”(No. 11 in the series) cost $178 million andgrossed $544 million, while “Dark Phoenix” cost$200 million and grossed only$140 million in its opening week.Disney can’t be very happy, sincethey picked up the “X-Men” fran-chise in their acquisition of 20thCentury Fox Pictures. Maybe exec-utives wondering what went wrongshould look back at “The FantasticFour” (2015), with Miles Teller,Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell andKate Mara, which cost $155 mil-lion to make and grossed only$168 million. Even though Disneynow has the top-grossing film of alltime, “Avengers: Endgame,” it maystill pull the plug on the “X-Men” franchise.

***I thoroughly enjoyed “Rocketman,” the biopicabout Elton John. Elton and his husband, DavidFurnish, have been trying to produce a film of hislife since 2001. Along the way, Justin Timberlakeand Tom Hardy were cast to play Elton, but whenMatthew Vaughn, producer and director of“Kingsmen: The Golden Circle,” was asked toproduce “Rocketman,” he would agree only ifTaron Egerton was cast as John. Egerton hit a

home run with his acting and singing as the popicon. And despite Elton’s husband as one of theproducers, they didn’t hold back on the sex anddrugs. In the late ‘70s, Elton and his manager/lover JohnReid rented a mansion in Beverly Hills, and Iwent to a party there with my late great publicistfriend Ron Scott (who discovered Tyler Henry,“The E Channel’s Hollywood Medium”). I spiedRon sneaking upstairs to Elton’s bedroom, and I

went with him to keep him out oftrouble. We stole a look intoElton’s wardrobe, and Ron slippedhis business card in 10 differentshoes, then we got out before wewere caught. John Reid called meweeks later and asked, “How didRon Scott get his business cardinto 10 pairs of Elton’s shoes?” Iconfessed what we’d done, and al-though he called back to say Eltonthought it was a very funny prank,we were never asked back!

***Melissa McCarthy is reteaming with

her “St. Vincent” (2014) director, Ted Melfi, andco-star Chris O’Dowd in “The Starling,” in whichshe tries to get rid of a black starling. That willfollow “The Kitchen,” with Tiffany Haddish, Eliz-abeth Moss and Common (due Aug. 9) and “Su-perintelligence,” which reunites her with herdirector/husband, Ben Falcone, and co-starsBobby Cannavale, Brian Tyree Henry, Jean Smartand James Corden. Melissa McCarthy and TiffanyHaddish together, now that has to be hilarious!

We have a saying,‘Nothing about us without us’ ... so thisis the way I feel like it should be done, inthis respectful manner where we are part-ners and we get to really have input andsay on how we want to be presented tothe world and (have) our values sharedwith the world.”Another advocate of “Molly of Denali”

is award-winning Canadian actor LorneCardinal (“Corner Gas”), who voices thecharacter Grandpa Nat. “Just having ayoung Native kid seeing another Nativeperson on TV opens up so many doors,”he reasons. “When I do theater and wehave a Q&A with an audience, we seeNative people in the audience and theysay, ‘Oh, I didn’t know we were allowedto do that.’ There’s still that conceptionthat we’re fighting with.“We still have to do the hard work,”

Cardinal adds. “There are no free passes. You still have to have the passion and thededication. (By) us doing this show, there’s also a step for kids (in thinking),‘Oh, I can do that, too.’ Yes, you can. Andthanks to PBS for making that possible aswell.”
