The following is from “Nuestra Parroquia” The Readings and their Message Sirach 3:2–6, 12–14 In a society that gave so much importance to the family structure, it was logical to claim respect and veneration for parents. The family structure was the first human nucleus where the dominant social structure was reflected. If it had to do with the tribal society, the family was the cell of the tribe; if it was a monarchical society, such as the one that was formed since David, then the family mirrored the monarchy, where the father was foremost. Together the father and mother, who had to be respected, followed by the children were the foundation of the social order.

Colossians 3:12–21 As people elected by God, we must put on feelings of compassion, gentleness, humility, modesty, and patience; but, above all things, we must have love and charity for one another, which is the most perfect bond of union. We must direct all our words and actions to the glory of God, invoking the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and rendering thanks to God for all his blessings.

Luke 2:41–52 The importance of this story is in the dual dialogue between Jesus and the elders of the temple, and between Jesus and his parents. December 19, 2018 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Today, the Holy Father Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Auxiliary Bishop Alexander Salazar, who most recently served as Vicar for the Office of Ethnic Ministries of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I regret to inform you that in 2005, a year after he had been ordained a bishop, the Archdiocese was made aware of an allegation against Bishop Salazar of misconduct with a minor. Although the allegation was never directly reported to the Archdiocese, it was investigated by law enforcement in 2002 and the District Attorney did not prosecute. The accusation against Bishop Salazar stemmed from alleged misconduct that was said to have occurred in the 1990s, before he was ordained a bishop, when he was serving as a parish priest. Since he was a bishop at the time the allegation was received, the Archdiocese referred the matter to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at the Holy See, which conducted an investigation and imposed certain precautionary measures on the ministry of Bishop Salazar. Since the allegation was first brought forward, Bishop Salazar has consistently denied any wrongdoing. In the interest of due process, I requested and received permission from the Congregation for Bishops at the Holy See to submit the allegation to the Archdiocese’s independent Clergy Misconduct Oversight Board. The Board found the allegation to be credible and I submitted its findings and recommendations along with my own votum to the Holy See to make its final determination as to Bishop Salazar’s status. I am grateful for the Holy Father’s loving concern for the family of God here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. These decisions have been made out of deep concern for the healing and reconciliation of abuse victims and for the good of the Church’s mission. Let us continue to stay close to the victim-survivors of abuse, through our prayer and our actions. May we find hope in Jesus Christ, may the Blessed Virgin Mary be a mother to us all, and may God grant us peace. Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles

19 de diciembre del 2018 Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Hoy el Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, aceptó la renuncia del Obispo Auxiliar Alexander Salazar, quien recientemente se desempeñó como Vicario de la Oficina de Ministerios Étnicos de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Lamento informarles que en el 2005, un año después de haber sido ordenado obispo, la Arquidiócesis tuvo conocimiento de una denuncia contra el Obispo Salazar por conducta indebida con un menor. Pese a que la acusación nunca se reportó directamente a la Arquidiócesis, fue investigada por la policía en el 2002 y el Fiscal de Distrito no procesó. La acusación contra el Obispo Salazar provino de una supuesta conducta indebida que se dice ocurrió en la década de 1990, antes de ser ordenado obispo, cuando estaba sirviendo como sacerdote de una iglesia. Como era obispo en el momento en que se recibió la denuncia, la Arquidiócesis remitió el asunto a la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe de la Santa Sede, que realizó una investigación e impuso ciertas medidas de precaución al ministerio del Obispo Salazar. Desde que se presentó la acusación por primera vez, el Obispo Salazar ha negado consistentemente cualquier acto inmoral. En aras del debido proceso, solicité y recibí permiso de la Congregación para los Obispos de la Santa Sede para presentar la acusación ante el Comité de Supervisión de Mala Conducta del Clero, una junta independiente de la Arquidiócesis. El Comité encontró que la acusación era creíble y presenté sus conclusiones y recomendaciones junto con mi propio voto a la Santa Sede para que se tomara una decisión final sobre el estado del Obispo Salazar. Estoy agradecido por la amorosa preocupación del Santo Padre por la familia de Dios aquí en la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Estas decisiones se han tomado debido a la profunda preocupación por la sanación y la reconciliación de las víctimas de abuso y por el bien de la misión de la Iglesia. Sigamos manteniéndonos cerca de las víctimas-sobrevivientes de abuso, a través de nuestra oración y nuestras acciones. Las lecturas y su mensaje Eclesiástico 3:2–6, 12–14 En una sociedad que daba tanta importancia a la estructura de la familia, era lógico que se reclamara respeto y veneración por los padres. La familia como estructura era el primer núcleo humano donde se reflejaba la estructura social dominante. Si se trataba de sociedad tribal, la familia era la célula de la tribu; si era una sociedad monárquica, como la que se configuró a partir de David, la familia era el espejo de la monarquía, en la que el padre era el primero. Juntos, el padre y la madre, a quienes había que respetar, seguidos de los niños eran la base del orden social.

Colosenses 3:12–21 Como personas elegidas por Dios, debemos tener compasión, gentileza, humildad, modestia y paciencia; pero, sobre todo, debemos tener amor y caridad el uno para el otro, que es el vínculo más perfecto de unión. Todas nuestras palabras y acciones deben ser para la gloria de Dios, invocando el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y dándole gracias a Dios por todas sus bendiciones.

Lucas 2:41–52 La importancia de este relato está en el doble diálogo entre Jesús y los ancianos del templo, y entre Jesús y sus padres. La ocasión sirve, por un lado, para que Lucas establezca la paternidad divina y, por el otro, para que Jesús declare lo que considera su misión: los asuntos del Padre.

Cada semana, más de 50 niños son asesinados o resultan heridos cuando un conductor retrocede en su automóvil. En un número abrumador de esos casos, un padre de familia, pariente o amigo

cercano está detrás del volante. Es devastador pensar que una acción tan sencilla podría causar tanto daño a su hijo/a, pero sucede con demasiada frecuencia. Sea consciente de sus “puntos ciegos” cuando esté detrás del volante, esas áreas que se sabe que están ahí pero uno no puede ver claramente desde sus espejos retrovisores. Verifique lo que está sucediendo alrededor de su vehículo antes de subirse al mismo. Asegúrese de saber dónde están sus hijos antes de encender su automóvil.
