Spanish Hydrogen and FC activitiesDifferent kinds of Spanish entities participate in European projects,

IEA_HIA tasks, and they are active members of PTE_HPCINTA works, besides of other technical issues, on collecting data about the

activity of this sector.

1996

2005

The main target of this organization is to

facilitate and accelerate the development and use

of fuel cells and hydrogen based systems

in Spain

TASK 18H2 Data Base:

•National publications•National Projects

PRODUCTION Commercially the hydrogen is produced by hydrocarbons

reforming (nafta and natural gas) or gasification, by industrial gas companies as Air liquide, Carburos Metalicos, Praxair, Messer and Abello Linde.

There is several plants around Spain (for example, Air liquide has H2 production plants in Puertollano, La Coruña, Sandander and Estarreja)

UTILIZATION The current commercial applications are mainly in the

Chemical (plastics, oils,…) and petrochemical industry. Electronic industry for cooling and pure water production is also considered.

A small demand is appearing for energy applications, but only for demo projects.

Future Hydrogen resources

The Spanish platform has made a detailed analysis of potential hydrogen production sources based on natural available resources and its future exploitation.

Spain focus the H2 production from renewable sources as biomass and wind energy.

The solar energy also will have an important role in the hydrogen production due to the prospect of electricity optimization costs.

The RES in Spain are spread all around the country and it has enough potential to supply the future demand
