On Thursday, January 31, the third, fourth, and fifth grade students from Temple Beth-El School visited the City Commission Chambers to meet with Mayor Bill Partington and City Manager Joyce Shanahan. The students are studying government and wanted to learn more about their own local government in Ormond Beach. A very informative ani- mated video was shown to give the students an overview of local gov- ernment in Florida. After a question and answer session, the students held two mock City Commission meetings with their own Mayor and City Commissioners and heard public comments from other students. The students made an entire day of field trips visiting both the Police Department and a Fire Station before coming to City Hall. The stu- dents were wonderful guests, and we were happy to show them how their local government works and what it provides for citizens. Thank you Mrs. Godfrey, Mrs. Haines and Mrs. MacDonald for bringing your students to visit. We really enjoyed it! Inside this Issue

Coffee with a Cop Coffee with a Cop is a program that brings police officers and the community members they serve together, over coffee, to discuss issues and learn more about each other. The mission is to break down barriers between police officers and the citizens they serve by building relationships, one cup at a time. Biggby Coffee hosted Coffee with a Cop during the afternoon of January 24, 2019. Several officers attended the event and were able to meet with over 35 people to in-crease a positive rapport with the community and address a variety of concerns along with handing out crime prevention literature.

GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA

Pen & Ink Class

The Glenn Miller Orchestra performed their sixth annual engagement at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Monday, January 28. During the height of the Big Band Era in the 1940’s, the Glenn Miller Orchestra was the top selling recording and touring jazz orchestra. Made famous as the most popular dance band of the World War II era, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded a string of top number one hits in-cluding “In The Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “Tuxedo Junction,” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” The Glenn Miller Orchestra played all the Glenn Miller hits to the delight of the near capacity crowd in the house.

On Saturday, January 26, artist Jon Gore led a group of eighteen in a program to learn about drawing and sketching with ink. Jon covered and demonstrated the use of different types of paper, composition, and tech-niques artists use to draw three di-mensional ob-jects using a two

dimensional medium. Participants were then able to put these techniques into practice by creating their own drawings of nature and non-nature objects Jon displayed on a table. Some decided to capture nature scenes found at the EDC and within Central Park. Thank you Jon for a fun and creative program!

Watercolor Class On Friday, January 25, artist Holly Esch held a very interesting Natural Paints Watercolor Class at the Environmental Discovery Center (EDC). Fourteen participants learned about the many foods, especially fruits and vegetables, that can be used to make watercolor paints. Grinding or crushing the fruit or vegetable and mixing it with water can yield natural, beautiful watercolors.

Not surprisingly, carrots make a light orange color and yellow onion makes yellow. Interestingly, oth-ers foods make colors un-like the color of the food. For example, red cabbage yields a blue color and red onion makes an olive green color paint. Holly covered watercolor techniques such as blend-ing, mixing, highlighting, shading, and brushstrokes. Attendees then created their own painting using natural paints Holly had

prepared. Students were encouraged to find inspiring nature scenes around the EDC and paint their discoveries. All skill levels were invited to attend, and each student created a unique mas-terpiece. Thank you Holly for leading this fun and creative program!
