The Bishop’s Annual Appeal

In this special Year of Faith we are called to renew

our commitment to faith and love. With your contri-

butions to the 2013 Bishop’s Annual Appeal we can

move our faith forward by supporting youth and family ministries, Catholic education, vo-

cations to the Priesthood and Diaconate religious life, and the charitable works of our ex-

tended diocesan family.

Our Parish goal this year is the same as last year, $27,206.00. So far 42 families

have pledged $8,235.00. Please consider making a gift to this year’s Bishop’s Annual Ap-

peal. Thank you!

Ruzica Bozicevic, Yolanda Fiorenza, Ana Guillermo, Harry Benson, Geraldine Brow, Marie Steccato, Lisa D., Joanne Papa, Catherine Jaye, Betty Monahan, Francesca Tortora, Jonathon Capriotti, and Martha Comles, Michael Fluck, and we ask you Lord to watch over all those with incurable autoimmune dis-eases and for all those who are afflicted with MS, CF, Lou Gehrig’s disease, for those who suffer from Alz-

heimer disease, dementia, and their families.

God of all consolation, give life and health

to our sisters and brothers for whom

we pray in your Holy Name. Amen.

Renewal of baptismal promises

Lent is a two-track season, with both tracks focused on baptism. Lent reaches a crescendo after the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) with the arrival of the Easter Vigil, but Catholics often felt like they were on the sidelines as they watched the catechu-mens receive the Easter Sacraments. Since the liturgical reforms of Vati-can II, especially with the revision of the Easter Vigil rites, a high point of the Easter Vigil and each Mass on Easter Sunday is the renewal of the baptismal promises of all the people and the sprinkling with the baptismal water. The renewal emphasizes that Lent is a time for all disciples of Christ to look again at what it means to follow Christ. In some parishes, instead of simply sprinkling people with baptismal water (as may be done at other Masses during the year), people are invited to come to the bap-tismal font at the Masses on Easter and take the water from the font to bless themselves in remembrance of their baptism.

Please pray for the fol-lowing people who

will become full mem-bers of the Roman

Catholic Church at our Easter Vigil:

Christopher Duval, Jean Meroni, Kristine Rossi and Kerri Stewart.

Empty Tombs Again this Easter the Gospel proclaims to the disciples of Jesus: “The Lord’s tomb is

empty! He is risen!” Grace and life in Christ have defeated sin and death. But the good news calls

out to each believer even more intimately: “Your tomb is empty! You will rise!”

Jesus lived and died and rose so that we might live, die, and rise to eternal life with him.

However, our faith in resurrection is not confined to a postmortem moment. It has been said that

when a Christian comes to the end of life, he or she will have left behind a trail of empty tombs,

only the very last one of which will be the grave. Children grow into young adults, and when they

leave home and strike out on their own, they die to one way of living and arise to another. At times

we need to die to old ways of thinking, of judging and relating to others, of handling challenges and

difficulties.

When the spirit of Jesus delivers us from doubt or confusion or fear or grief, we leave an

empty tomb behind. Whenever we choose with grace to let go of envy or anger or greed, we are

raised from “a little death.” Whenever prayer and the help and example of others strengthen us to

overcome an addiction or a sinful behavior, we step out from a darkened grave into the light of

God’s loving regard. We are an Easter people and the Savior’s victory over the grave is ours as

well.—Archbishop George H. Niederauer
