NOAA-14: To increase the efficiency of battery charging, on 12 Jun at 18:05Z the N14 Solar Array offset was changed to –50 degrees (from –55). Subsequent analysis indicates that this did enhance battery charging but not to maximum efficiency. Since bus voltage remained nominal and steady since the move it indicates that the shunts have not been unduly stressed because of increased charging resulting from the move (illustration 1). Therefore, to maximize battery charging efficiency, a second small adjustment of the solar array offset by another 5 degrees (to –45 degree offset) is being planned for implementation on Thursday, 19 June at 18:15Z. The eclipse season on N14 has peaked with all 3 battery voltage low points stabilizing well within nominal values for an N14 eclipse season (illustration 2).
AVHRR scan motor current generally improved during the past week but remain relatively elevated. However, for the first time in 6 weeks, N14 AVHRR imagery has begun to improve although nominal data quality is not yet consistent and the instrument remains red in status (illustration 3).
In order to keep the command clock within +/- 75 msecs (1 AVHRR pixel) the N14 command clock was adjusted by subtracting 150 msecs on 10 Jun with no problems (illustration 11). Jim Sheperd was EMOSS POC for this update.
NOAA-15: The eclipse season on N15 has peaked with all 3 battery voltage low points stabilizing well within nominal values for an N15 eclipse season (illustration 4).
On 8 June at approximately 12:15Z the AMSU-B motor current surged and remained relatively elevated for approximately 2 hours after which it returned to nominal where it has since remained. This is the 5 th such surge since Dec 2002 (none of which resulted in limit violations). During the motor current surge motor temperatures also increased but they have also since returned to nominal (Illustration 5). No reports of image degradation have been reported to EMOSS nor has any been derived from PIDES analysis (Illustration 6). Will Kent is investigating this situation for EMOSS and is considering generating a TOAR in response.
The HIRS filter motor current surged on 15 Jun and has yet to return to nominal at the time of this writing (although it does appear to be trending back to nominal. This surge appears to be similar to others which have become a feature on N15 HIRS in the past two years. The effect of this surge on imagery quality is inconclusive (illustration 7a and 7b) and EMOSS engineers have not received word of any imagery degradation from users.
On 14 Jun at approximately the N15 AVHRR Scan Motor current experienced a small surge. This surge was not accompanied by an increase in scan motor temperature and the current returned to “normal” 5 hours later (illustration 8a). Imagery did not appear to have been adversely affected (illustration 8b). However, this surge represented the highest AVHRR scan motor current has been in almost one year and so will require additional vigilance. Will Kent is EMOSS POC for monitoring this situation.

NOAA-16: SSAI engineers notified EMOSS payload engineer Will Kent of a new problem with the N16 SBUV. In recent months the solar irradiance noise on this payload has been higher than usual (up to 2.0% - usually it is ~0.5%). This higher irradiance noise is consistent with a diffuser position error of -0.35 degrees and this behavior is very similar to that experienced on NOAA-9 SBUV/2, throughout the SBUV operational lifetime. In response to this situation, Matt Deland requested that EMOSS command the N16 SBUV diffuser position encoder to the backup unit (illustration 9. This was performed on 16 Jun at 17:15Z where it is expected to remain for at least the remainder of the month while SSAI engineers assess its performance relative to the primary diffuser. Will Kent will be generating a TOAR on this.
STX-3 testing occurred at Wallops on 2 successive passes on 14 and 15 Jun (4 passes total) . Preliminary analysis confirms a degradation of N16 STX-3 output (illustration 10). Angelique Riley is EMOSS POC for this testing.

NOAA-N With thermal vac data now available and a TTS that can support NOAA-N, the EMOSS team has initiated data base validation of NOAA-N. Delivery of a Level 2 data base to NASA (excluding MHS/MIU) is scheduled for 25 July.
