Packing in Preparation for a Move

The process of packing up your home can be hard, stressful and time consuming. Hopefully, with the

help of these packing tips and tricks you can feel more organized.

First tip is to decide how you will organize your belongings. The most helpful way is to compartmentalize

your rooms that you are packing keep the proper stuff with the room they will be packed in.

Make sure that when you organize that you start with the least used items first and proceed towards

your daily used items being packed last. This is so you can break down the home toward the bare

essentials.

Finding the Right Materials

Finding the right materials is key to preventing breakage and ensures that your items are taken care of.

Get a range of box sizes and strengths depending upon what you need to pack and store.

Larger boxes for larger items and lighter packing loads down to small boxes for very dense, tight packing

should be considered. With the most important and special items ensure that the strongest boxes are

used.

When it comes to actually packing of individual

items, certain items should be packed specific

ways to insure integrity. With small, fragile, or

expensive items, make sure wrap them

individually in tissue paper or towels.

Remember that certain items although more able

to pack tightly should not fill bigger boxes. Use

smaller boxes for heavier items that pack well

and larger boxes for more oddly shaped items.

No matter whether it is a professional moving

company or a do-it-yourself job, it is important to

line your box with shredded paper or packing peanuts. This failsafe provides the needed cushioning

during the move and will keep your valuable safe.

When wrapping china, fine glass and fine silverware, make sure what you pack it all in is sturdy enough

to resist any crushing. Wrap each piece individually and double over the paper that you use on each of

the fragile pieces to prevent scratching or breakage.

There’s a Technique?

Make sure that you are wrapping your largest pieces first and using this as your base. As you build

upward in the container, fill the empty space as you go to prevent shifting.

With clothing, special boxes exist that help to keep the clothes looking clean and unwrinkled. If unable

to invest in such boxes, make sure and take the clothing off the hangers to prevent rips and tighter

packing.

Bed linens and towels should be protected and wrapped in some sort of plastic. Because they are often

used as cushioning in boxes, it is important to protect them from tearing.

DVD’s, Blu-Rays, and CD’s should be placed on their short edges on the bottom of the box. Placing on

the short edge distributes weight evenly and prevents smashed disks and cases.

Major appliances should be emptied and ready

to be moved. We recommend using outside

movers to prevent damage and injury from

inexperience.

With computers, small appliances, or any other

electronics, it is always important to keep the

original packaging. Once in the original packing,

it is easier to place in larger boxes for moving

purposes.

With any and all items that have fluids or gels

needed for operation, it is important to drain

this out. During moves, this can create messy

problems and destroy your goods.

Outdoor equipment and furnishings should be

dismantled beforehand. Once dismantled they are able to be moved faster once organized.

With books of any kind make sure that those of similar size and shape are packed together with the

spine down. This will prevent the spine from being torn or broken as more pressure is exerted on the

top of boxes when stacking.

Photos should be packed entirely separate from any of the regular items in the home. Because of the

chemicals and ease of such objects being lost, it is necessary to pack these in different boxes.

With food packing, only take food that will actually travel well according to your move. Seal open boxes

and used items to ensure freshness and prevent critters.

And the Boxes

Be careful with overloading your boxes with too much, the key is to prevent shifting. The rule of thumb

for boxes is to fill them about 85-90% full to ensure that nothing is smashed inside of the box.

When sealing each of the boxes, make sure to use ample tape. This tape around the box will keep the

contents from shifting and breaking.

Once the box is sealed list the contents of your box on the side and top of each box. This information is

vital especially for professional moving companies.

With all of these tips and tricks regarding your packing experience, the process can proceed smooth and

effortlessly. Once you are done and the sooner it is unpacked, the sooner you can enjoy your home!
