” … the boldest and mostcourageous project ever”

These are the words of Peter Bestdescribing the polymer plain bea-ring application in the KRONESbottle cleaning machine which wonthe Golden Manus award. PeterBest is the Head of Research andDevelopment Department at KRO-NES AG in Flensburg, Germany, andwas responsible for this project.

The Manus is a joint initiative of

companies and institutions fromresearch and business sectors. Thefounding initiators are igus® GmbH,the ”Industrie Anzeiger” technicaljournal and the FraunhoferChemical Technology Institute.

The aim of the Manus award isto announce applications for poly-mer plain bearings and promotemore widespread use of such bea-rings in the sector of new polymermaterials which number amongstthe key technologies of the 21stcentury. Further information on theManus can be found atwww.manus-wettbewerb.de.

What motivated you to developthe DryLin® W system? We noticed that with our previouslinear guides we were unable to res-pond to certain customer enquiries.Depending on mechanical design, applications with only one rail andone slide may cause self-binding.The flexible mechanical design ofthe system helps to avoid this. What were the other aims? The new guide was to be very com-pact – but also to be able to absorbhigh forces. In addition, a modularmechanical design of the systemwas to make it possible to respondeasily to an extremely wide varietyof customer requirements. How is this flexibility expressed? The guide system unites two sup-porting round shafts in one profile. This allows optimum use of availa-ble space. In addition, there is noneed for time-consuming align-ment of the shafts. It is also possi-ble to use the rails both as a one-piece version (supported doubleround shaft) or as a single version(supported single round shaft).

”Recommended” materials for the tobacco industry nowallow the use of polymer plain bearings and Energy Chainsin direct contact with tobacco.

Polymer materials now also in the tobacco industry

The requirements relating to theuse of plastics in the tobacco indu-stry are particularly stringent. Thus, only ”recommended” materialsshould be used. These must befree of carcinogenic additives suchas PTFE and may con-tain only certain basicpolymers. igus® has nowdeveloped two specialmaterials for plain bea-rings and Energy Chainsfor this industry sector, precisely meeting theserequirements of the tob-acco industry.

Material iglidur® T1which features advanta-geous tribological cha-racteristics is now availa-ble for use in polymerplain bearings. In additi-on to the very good wearresistance and low moi-sture absorption, thematerial can also beused with soft shaftmaterials.

The tobacco industrycan now also benefitfrom the fundamentaladvantages of polymerplain bearings; 100 %freedom from mainten-ance and lubrication pre-vents both tobacco andpackaging material contamination. Polymerplain bearings are alsoentirely insensitive to dirtand dust with high abra-sion resistance – even

igus® presented a world first on the occasion of the lastmeeting of the tobacco industry at the TABEXPO inNovember 2003 in Barcelona: plain bearings and EnergyChains made of materials iglidur® T1 and igulen N.

when subject to high loads.igus® now also has an approved

polymer material for EnergyChains. Energy Chains made ofmaterial igulen N allow directcontact with the tobacco.

The length and width of theguide system are determinedby the user. This modulardesign is greatly appreciated inthe packaging industry. Lowoverall height allows optimumutilisation of available space.

Does the flexibility also apply tothe guide bearings?Yes, various versions are availableeven with the slides: the compactslide consists of four bearingblocks which are fitted to a moun-ting plate, offering the advantage ofbeing easy to install. However, thebearing blocks may also be bolteddirectly onto the machine. How does DryLin® W behave underdifficult ambient conditions?Dry running ensures that dirt doesnot adhere to the guide system. Inaddition, the round shaft guideensures that only little dirt is able tocome to rest on the shafts in anyinstallation position. Where do you consider the main fieldof application of DryLin® W to be?We are already implementing verymany applications today in thepackaging industry and, in thiscase, primarily in labelling andhoop-banding systems and in bagforming, filling and sealing machi-nes.Thank you for talking to us.
