WOOD•Hygroscopic•Strong•Properties depend on the moisture content in timber•Abrasive•Good hardness•Inherent defects•Susceptible to fungus and microbial attacks•Dry wood susceptible to warping and bending•Fabrication of wood into boxes and crates is manual•Wood is becoming scarce.

PAPER & PAPER BOARD•Paper is a hygroscopic material – it absorbs moisture in high humid condition and it looses moisture in dry condition.•The mechanical properties of paper is influenced by the moisture content of the paper•Mechanical strength and elongation are generally low.•Paper provides stiffness and shape to the pack.•Paper offers an excellent printing surface.•Many varieties of paper for special application – grease proof paper, glassine paper etc.•Susceptible to tear and puncture.•Eco friendly

GLASS

•Chemically inert•Non-permeable•Transparent – can be coloured•Moulable to any shapes•High strength •Light weight•Highly brittle •Raw materials for manufacture are easily available•Decoration through special process (frosting and ceramic printing)•Eco friendly

JUTE

• One of the oldest form of sacking

• Strong

• Natural fibre

• Made from renewable source as compared to the

synthetic fibres

• Being an agricultural product the availability

depends on the climatic variations.

METAL•Very strong•Impermeable material•Good printing surface•Susceptible to erosion unless lacqueUred or coated•Susceptible to denting•Can be used as thing foils to improve the permeation rates in plastic laminates•Can be retorted/sterilized easily for food preservation.•Particularly useful for food products which require long shelf life.•Can withstand internal pressures•Can be used for hot filling – Food products•Manufacturing and filling can be done at high speeds.•Eco friendly

PLASTICS• Variety of materials – each varying in properties.• High mechanical strength and high elongation.• Plastics in general (with a few exceptions) are not moisture sensitive.• It can be used both in the flexible forms and the rigid forms.• Heat sensitive.• Can be moulded into shapes through various processing techniques.• It is impermeable to water ingress but not to moisture.• The moisture or gas ingress depends on the type of plastics, the

thickness of the materials, the atmospheric conditions etc.• Different plastics can be combined to form a composite material to

achieve the desired properties for the product protection.• Surface is polar in nature and hence direct printing is difficult in most

cases.• Generally plastics have good tear, puncture and abrasion resistant

properties.• Generally they are translucent to clear but can be made opaque by

addition of pigments.• Recyclable under normal uncombined state.
