it comes to building Web-mapping tools. When
clients need a web application to share integrated
design and mapping information, PAT and its
customers choose between Autodesk MapGuide
Enterprise or MapGuide Open Source software.
Weve had great success implementing and
developing on both technologies, says Wahi.
There are denite benets to each approach. We
make suggestions based on a clients standards.
We present clients with the advantages of both
and they decide.
Clients that prefer the absolute latest innovationswill opt for MapGuide Open Source technology
where the collaborative community constantly
works to improve the software. Autodesk
MapGuide Enterprise is Autodesks version of the
open source software and offers the security that
comes with formal testing and customer support.
It depends on the organizations personality.
We can achieve the same business goal with both
technologies, Wahi adds.
Increasing Revenues and Cutting Costs
According to PAT, Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise
provides an increased level of quality assurance.
Being an Autodesk product, Autodesk MapGuideEnterprise offers an implicit endorsement that it
is high-quality software. It is tested thoroughly
before release. Our more traditional customers
appreciate the association with a leading software
provider and are willing to spend more on the
reputation and assurance of a quality tested and
formally supported product, says Wahi.
While developing applications on proprietary
software provides security and peace of mind
associated with a trusted company, PAT feels just
as comfortable working with MapGuide Open
Source. We are part of the larger open source
community and constantly work to enhance thetechnology, which improves our applications,
adds Wahi. Numerous resources and solutions
to technical problems are readily available in the
community, which means our consultants save
time and money using this research.
The Result
Satisfed Customers
Using iVAULT, a customized tool built on top
of either Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise or
MapGuide Open Source, PATs customers see
a strong acceleration for typical workows and
tasks. For example, municipalities wanting to lin
a parcel fabric to assessment reports previously
waited through two or more days of custom
development. But, after implementing iVAULT,staff can achieve the same result at a fraction
of the time a full 75 percent faster without any
development.
Enhanced Data Quality
PATs web-mapping applications are user-friendl
making it easy for employees throughout the
clients organization to quickly understand what
they are seeing and operate the application.
Using FDO Data Access technology, another
open source software tool that provides seamles
data integration for multiple proprietary GIS
formats, PAT customers have a single view of
their information and save time by reviewing andupdating data directly from the map without the
hassle of data translation or conversion.
It doesnt matter if an asset is housed in the
nance department or saved as an SHP le in the
planning database, it is displayed on the map.
Even users with little technical expertise can hel
to update the map and enhance the quality of
their data, says Wahi. Once they see their own
contribution to the accuracy of the map, their
personal investment in the data quality grows
tremendously.
