Welcometo the show

Welcome to the 14th annual Pacific Agriculture Show. It is by far the largest and most important agri-cultural exhibition in the province.

The show repre-sents all sectors, from dairy to poul-try to livestock, and the wide variety of crops grown within the large scope of horticulture.

The world is an uncertain place and it’s important for nations to be able to produce as much of their own food as possible, both for ensuring food safety as well as guaranteeing supply. The Pacific Agriculture Show is the place to see all the equipment, technologies and

techniques critical to ensuring the continued local production of food. Agriculture is an important industry, a strong contributor to a healthy

economy, and a valuable part of the community.

For the family, there is lots to see includ-ing the antique farm equipment museum, the popular Aldor Acres petting zoo, Raptor’s Ridge Birds of Prey, and the Dairy classroom on Saturday in the John Deere Pavilion.

So whether you are in the Ag industry, or are interested in farming or heavy equipment you will enjoy your time at the Show.

Show on a record-setting paceThe 14th annual Pacific Agriculture

Show is on track to set new records.“The exhibitor response has been

phenomenal” says Jim Shepard, Show Manager. We are already near-ing capacity and are getting creative in looking for ways to find room for new exhibitors.

“We have added two tents that will hold the industry lunches and will also provide space for another 20 to 30 exhibitors.

“It is frustrating at times when a prospective new exhibitor is looking for a large space or when our current exhibitors want to expand and we simply cannot accommodate them,” added Shepard. “Luckily Tradex recently announced that they will be expanding and the Show will be able to take advantage of the increase in floor space to reach its full potential.”

Once again, with more than 250 companies exhibiting the latest equip-ment, products and techniques for the Ag business – the Pacific Agriculture Show is the place to be for anyone involved in Agribusiness.

Show times are Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The admission charge is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, and children under 14 free.

Planning for the 54th annual Horticulture Producers Short Course has been completed. Topics include sessions for the three major berry industries, farm business manage-ment, farm direct marketing, organic production and the all-important agri-energy forum.

The keynote speaker at the short course will be Dr. Jennifer James, an urban cultural anthropologist who was a professor at the University of Washington Medical School prior to developing her public lectures and corporate seminars, which she pres-ents worldwide.

Her unique background (history, psychology and anthropology) has made her one of the most sought-after speakers in the world. She is a researcher, writer and commenta-tor and has published seven books, numerous academic articles and wrote a newspaper column for the Seattle Times for 18 years. She has filmed two PBS specials titled, “Thinking in the Future Tense” and “A

Workout for the Mind.” James regu-larly receives standing ovations and is described by clients as “inspiring, incredible, thought-provoking, inno-vative, humorous, energizing, and empowering.

For the 2012 Pac Ag Show horticul-ture producers can register on-line, by mail, FA, or in person at the Tradex Centre. Fees are $90 at the door.

The highly popular and trend-setting Agri Energy Forum, organized by Matt Dickson, will again be a major high-light at the show. Renewable energy technology adoption continues to grow.

Globally, farmers and food proces-sors are increasingly taking advantage of renewable agri-energy technologies to maintain a more stable financial condition through energy indepen-dence and diversification. Topics include solar thermal, anaerobic digestion, geo exchange, and project financing. The events start Thursday and continue all-day Friday.

BDO will be sponsoring the BC Dairy Expo noon barbeque which has become a very popular event of the

annual dairy show.Feature speaker at BC Dairy Expo

seminar is Dr. Jan Shearer from Iowa State University. Dr. Shearer will be focusing on ‘lameness and hoof health’ in the dairy industry, which is regarded by many as the number one

herd health/animal welfare issue fac-ing the industry today.

The latest equipment on displayThe Pacific Agriculture

show continues to be an overwhelming success, and again this year space is limited with both old and new participants seeking more room for their displays.

Andy Mitchell of Abbotsford’s Avenue Machinery Corp says last year’s show was excellent, and that he and general manager Tim Drake are looking for-ward to the 2012 event. Mitchell pointed out that, “the show not only caters to the farmer and those in other agricultural enterprises, but provides a great place for families to come out and enjoy the many displays of farm machinery with the kids having fun climbing on the tractors.”

Mitchell says Avenue will introduce their new spray cab tractor unit designed for the berry industry at the 2012 show. With a front-mounted spray boom that is fully adjustable from the cab, it means New farm machinery, like these offerings from Kubota, is always a popular attraction for those attending the Pacific Agriculture Show at Tradex.

Investing in a system you hope you never have to use may seem odd, but it made per-fect sense to the city of Coffeyville, Kansas. The city wanted to ensure that their com-munity would never be left in the dark, no matter what Mother Nature threw at them. That’s why they built a “black-start” generation facility, featuring two Baldor 2,000 kW generators that would start their main power plant in the event of the loss of electric power from the transmission grid. Talk about a perfect insurance policy. In the months since the unit was commis-sioned, the city has not once been disap-pointed by the system.

Dairy expo, energy forum and ag galathat operators won’t have to wear protection equipment to spray their crops. The spray boom is adaptable to all models of tractor.

Also, to be seen for the first time, will be a new spray tractor equipped with crawler tracks making it easier to manoeuvre in muddy fields or rough terrain.

The Avenue Machinery exhibit is only part of the overall trade show featuring numerous other displays showcasing advances and improvements in farm opera-tions predicated by the indus-try’s technological advances.

Dairy ExpoThe 44th annual BC Dairy

Expo on Thursday morning, Jan. 26, in the BMO Room gets underway at 10 a.m. with the focus on lameness, which is regarded as the number one animal welfare issue fac-ing the dairy industry today.

This presentation will provide an excellent overview and understanding of the many interrelated factors affecting hoof health.

At 10:50 a.m. Doug Johnstone from ARPE Hoof Trimming Ltd. will outline the results of a hoof health pilot study. His presentation will summarize interim findings of this 18-month study in terms of incidence and types of hoof lesions detected in the 75-plus dairy farms which participated in the study.

At 11:10 a.m., keynote speaker Dr. Jan Shearer will talk about foot warts, foot baths, foot sprays and foot wraps. This talk will address everything applicable to understanding the underlying causes, treatment and control of the various forms of digital and interdigital dermatitis. New work being done at Iowa State will be presented as well. This talk will be tailored

to a producer audience for direct application to on-farm management practices.

Dr. Jan Shearer received his DVM degree from Ohio State University in 1975 and worked as a practicing veterinarian in north central Ohio for over four years before returning to Ohio State to complete graduate studies in nutrition. He spent 27 years with the University of Florida as a professor and dairy extension veterinarian before relocating to Iowa State University to serve in a similar position. Dr. Shearer’s primary interests and expertise are with lame-ness and welfare issues of dairy cattle.

The dairy producer barbe-cue luncheon, sponsored by BDO Chartered Accountants and Advisors, will be an opportunity to enjoy a hearty lunch and network with all

Dairy Expo speakers, fellow producers and luncheon hosts.

Anyone without a free barbecue pass card that was distributed to BC Dairy Expo seminar attendees will be required to pay $15 per person for the barbecue luncheon. The cost is $18 per person for anyone wanting a Friday luncheon ticket.

Agri Energy

Thursday afternoon, Jan. 26, starting at 1 p.m., this day-and-a-half forum costs $90 per person. Since seat-ing is limited, pre-registration is highly recommended. Complete registration details are available at the Pacific Agriculture Show website: www.agricultureshow.net.

Renewable energy technol-ogy adoption in the agri-

cultural sector continues to grow. Globally, farmers and food processors are increas-ingly taking advantage of renewable agri-energy tech-nologies to maintain a more stable financial condition through energy independ-ence and diversification beyond conventional agricul-tural based income sources.

Building on last year’s highly successful forum, the 2012 Agri-Energy Forum will explore in greater detail which of these renewable agri-energy technologies are most pertinent to British Columbia’s agricultural sec-tor, enabling producers to better determine which tech-nologies are most suitable for their own operation.

Ag GalaOn Jan. 25, 2012, at the

Ramada Inn in Abbotsford, attendees can kick off the Pacific Agriculture Show in style and join organizers for an evening celebrating B.C.’s food, wine and agri-culture industry.

The 10th annual event starts at 5 p.m. with a cham-pagne reception.

Guest speaker is David Meslin, noted journalist and co-editor of Local Motion: The Art of Civic Engagement in Toronto. Meslin embraces ideas and projects that cut across traditional bounda-ries between grassroots politics, electoral politics and the arts community.

The award for Excellence in Agriculture Leadership will be presented at the Gala.

For ticket reservations phone 604-854-4454 or e-mail: [email protected].

The Pacific Agricultural Show features a number of popular seminars on current issues in the farming industry.

Farmers embracing technologyFarm Credit Canada says farmers are

very interested in new forms of mobile technology, and at the coming Pacific Agriculture Show they will find the latest innovations.

According to a recent FCC study, farmers have been quick to purchase a Smartphone (29 per cent). It’s the same story for tablet use with six per cent of producers owning a tablet. Tablet adoption is expected to be highest among current Smartphone users. More than half (53 per cent) of producers who own a Smartphone today plan to buy a tablet within two years.

With a strong web connection, these devices can turn vehicles and farm machin-ery into a mobile office where producers can conveniently monitor their farm opera-tion, place orders, market products, and monitor weather and interest rates.

Getting access to relevant financial data and economic information can be a real advantage in today’s fast-moving marketplace. Innovation has always been a major driver of profitability in agriculture and mobile technology is just one more tool available to gain a competitive edge. Canadian producers are innovative and have historically adopted new technology that will be found at the Pacific Agriculture Show among the many farm machinery displays and related activities.

B.C. farmers are technology friendly, and the Pacific Agriculture Show provides up-to-date information and displays.

“It’s what makes the show tick,” says show manager Jim Shepard.

Direct Solutions sponsors show

The Pac Ag Show continues to expand and attract businesses that have a vested interest in agriculture.

Among them is Direct Solutions – a new name for an old and trusted member of B.C. agriculture, Evergro Canada. With its main B.C. operation located in Delta, Evergro is now part of Agrium Advanced Technologies, a world-wide com-pany which previously operated primarily in eastern Canada and the United States.

The acquisition will allow the new Direct Solutions to incorporate and enhance its expertise in providing

controlled release fertilizers, pest control and soil amendment prod-ucts, as well as turf and vegetable seed products; utilizing Evergro’s blending and bagging facility in Delta.

Direct Solutions will now be able to better support and serve its grow-ing business within the Pacific Rim.

Direct Solutions is proud to be a major part of the Pac Ag Show, providing a conference room for the entire Greenhouse industry program on Thurs., Jan. 26 and the Farm Direct Marketing seminars on Sat., Jan. 28.

The leader in agriculture lendingAs Canada’s leading agriculture

lender, Farm Credit Canada is trying to advance the business of agriculture.

With a healthy portfolio of more than $22 billion and 19 consecutive years of portfolio growth, FCC is strong and stable – committed to serving the industry through all cycles.

FCC provides financing, insur-ance, software, learning programs and other business services to pro-ducers, agri-businesses and agri-food operations. FCC employees are passionate about agriculture and committed to the success of customers and the industry.

The purpose of the corporation is to enhance rural Canada by provid-ing specialized and personalized business and financial services and products to farming operations, including family farms, and to those businesses in rural Canada, including small and medium-sized businesses, that are businesses related to farming.

The primary focus of the activities of the corporation is on farming operations, including family farms.

These are exciting times in agri-culture as the industry is constantly changing and evolving.

From financing to training and software, community programs and knowledge, our commitment to the agriculture industry remains strong.

FCC believes its public policy role permeates everything the company does. For example, the FCC brand is exemplified by the positioning line, “Advancing the business of agriculture.”

This illustrates the company’s belief that agriculture, including the full value chain, is a business. It tells people that FCC is a visionary organization committed to helping producers and business operators succeed in a complex agriculture industry.

FCC serves Canadian agriculture as the leading provider of financing to the industry since 1959.

The organization puts its focus on the primary producer as well as suppliers and processors along the agricultural value chain. It provides customers with flexible, com-petitively priced financing, equity, insurance, management software, information and learning.

These services help customers make sound business decisions and experience greater success.

FCC takes time to get to know customers, their individual needs, goals and vision for the future. It works with them through chal-lenges and helps them pursue opportunities.

As the FCC says: “Agriculture. We know it. We love it. We’re in it for the long run.”

Farm Credit Canada is an active sponsor and participant at the annual show.

Many career opportunitiesin agriculture

Agriculture provides a large range of career options, and training and education is available locally.

Graduates of University of the Fraser Valley agriculture programs are among the most employable graduates in the field across Canada, says a press release from the university in Abbotsford.

The variety of careers are vast, with a tremendous diversity among career paths. Graduates of these programs are in high demand, with many job placements even prior to graduation.

UFV’s agriculture program prepares grads for entry into the dynamic world of agriculture. Due to the school’s favourable climate and proximity to some of the most fertile land in Canada, the opportu-nities for field trips and interaction with a wide host of local agricul-tural and horticultural businesses and organizations is tremendous.

Careers in HorticultureFor those with education and

practical skills, career opportunities in agriculture are excellent. UFV agriculture graduates are success-ful in finding jobs throughout the horticulture industry.

They find employment in green-houses, golf courses and land-scaping companies, as grounds maintenance personnel and as technicians with various levels of government. Others find careers in the agri-business sector in market-ing, sales, and service. Some graduates return to family-owned enterprises or start their own small business.

Qualified graduates of the diploma option in horticulture are eligible to ladder into the Bachelor of Business Administration for Agriculture Management program at UFV, or transfer to Olds College in Alberta where they will receive transfer credit towards a bachelor of science degree in applied horti-culture technology.

Careers in LivestockUFV agriculture graduates

have success finding jobs in the livestock sector as well as in more general agricultural industries. Sample livestock-related occupa-tions include dairy farm manager or owner/operator, dairy herdsperson, artificial insemination specialist, ranch hand, sales representative for livestock-related supplies, government livestock and forage technician, swineherd production assistant, and poultry producers.

Careers in IPMPeople with integrated pest man-

agement training are needed by

the horticulture industry to identify and assess pest problems, and help to recommend and implement management programs. Career opportunities in IPM for qualified applicants are expected to increase over the next several years.

Graduates may find work as IPM field scouts in nurseries, green-houses, or for field crop and/or orchard operations. Graduates may work directly for growers, for IPM consulting firms, or as technicians in various government research programs.

Horticulture Options Graduates of the one-year

horticulture crop production and protection certificate program will be qualified to seek work as competent assistants in field crop production, in government, as technicians, in greenhouses, nursery greenhouses, garden centres, landscape companies and in grounds maintenance. Some graduates start their own busi-nesses.

The one-year horticulture crop production and protection cer-tificate transfers completely to the two-year agriculture technology diploma, horticulture crop produc-tion and protection option. Some credits may also transfer to other two-year programs in horticulture. Qualifying students may also be eligible to receive the equivalent of Year I apprenticeship in produc-tion horticulture. Students will be actively involved in practical, hands-on activities on the UFV campuses and in the agriculture technology department green-houses and plant nursery area. All students are required to perform greenhouse-related work on the Chilliwack campus outside of regular class hours. As well, many courses have required field trips at student expense.

Livestock ProductionStudents seeking practical train-

ing in livestock production can earn a livestock production certifi-cate. Graduates of this program will be qualified to seek employment on dairy farms, as government technicians, in other supply and livestock sectors, and in the agri-service sectors. Some graduates start their own enterprises.

The one-year livestock production certificate program transfers com-pletely to the two-year agriculture technology diploma, livestock production option. Graduates may also be able to transfer their live-stock production certificate to other agriculture diploma programs.

The Pacific Agriculture Show is a popular event for farm families.
