Pablo Picasso 

 

 1881 ­ 1973 born in Spain, lived in France and Spain  One of the most famous, successful and influential artists of all time is Pablo Picasso.  He demonstrated extraordinary talent as an artist.  

His work is widely recognized all over the world.   

 

Do you know who Pablo Picasso is?   

Where have you seen his artwork before? 

 

   

 

Picasso was successful in creating many different types of art with a variety of different art materials including drawing, printing, painting, sculpture and ceramics. 

 Picasso became interested in art and enjoyed creating art at a very young age.  It has been said that even Picasso’s first word was artistic.  His first word was “piz,” short for “lápiz” the Spanish word for “pencil.”  

Picasso’s parents were very supportive of his education and career in Art.  His father who was a painter, an art teacher, and a curator, encouraged his son to become an artist after quickly realizing Picasso’s astonishing artistic gift.  

Here is a photograph of Picasso with his dog.  He loved his dog named 

“Lump,” pronounced “loomp”  which is the German word for “rascal.”   

Look at the line drawing of the dog..  Trace your finger on the line. 

It is just one line that makes up the whole drawing.

‘La Premiér Communion’ (The First Communion)

 

These are examples of Picasso’s very early paintings.  He had an exceptional ability as an artist at a very young age.  ‘La Premiér Communion’ (The First Communion) was completed when he was only 15.  

 

He was a terrible student… 

Although artistically he was years ahead of his classmates (who were all five or six years older than him), Picasso was often thrown into detention because he didn’t like being told what to do:  “For being a bad student I was banished to the ‘calaboose’ – a bare cell with whitewashed walls and a bench to sit on. I liked it there, because I took along a sketch pad and drew incessantly… I could have stayed there forever drawing without stopping.”

Picasso had great success creating art in many different art styles throughout his 

career.  Here are two of those different styles, his blue period and Cubism.  He was inspired by the people and things in his everyday life in both of these paintings. During his blue period, his paintings reflected the blue feelings in his own life and in the 

world around him.  For his cubist artwork, he simplified realistic subjects into flat shapes 

and colors. 

 

Cubist artists rejected the traditional idea that art should copy nature, and look realistic.  In “The Three Musicians,” Picasso created art in an abstract way by using geometric shapes to make the painting look flat.

 These are two paintings by Picasso, one is realistic in style and the other is cubist and abstract.  Picasso created many portraits of his family, his children and his friends throughout his career.

Portrait of Dora Maar, 1937

Here are two portraits by Picasso, of the same person, created in the same year.  Both are Cubist Paintings.  In Cubism, subjects are abstracted by breaking apart and reassembling the pieces.   Many sides or viewpoints are shown at the very same time.  Look closely at the eyes.   The idea behind multiple perspectives Cubist artwork is that  If you can see many sides something all at the same time, you can show more than if you were just looking at something from one point of view.

 The black lines and bright bold colors and the facial expression show a woman in distress in The Weeping Woman.  The soft colors and gentle blending as well as the expression and posture show Dora Maar in a more peaceful way.  

 

Maya with a Doll, 1937

This is a painting of Picasso’s daughter Maya with her doll.    

How old do you think she is here?    It looks like we are seeing the front and the side of her face at the very same time!  Look closely at the eyes.  

 

The face on the doll and Maya’s face are very similar.  The doll may be a reference to Picasso as a father.  He was photographed as a child wearing a similar outfit as the doll. Also, Maya’s clothing is a reference to his earlier painting of his son Claude in similar clothing and the ruffled clothing in the paintings of Diego Velasquez who was an artist admired by Picasso. 

 

Bull’s Head, 1942

Picasso created “Bull’s Head by putting two objects together that don’t normally go together in this way.  Can you see what the two objects were?  He changes the way we see a bicycle seat and handlebars in order create his sculpture.  Bull's Head is a found object artwork by Pablo Picasso, created in 1942 from seat and handlebars of a bicycle. It is described as Picasso's most famous discovery, a simple yet "astonishingly complete" metamorphosis.  Picasso described the artwork in 1943 to visiting photographer George Brassai, saying: “Guess how I made the bull's head? One day, in a pile of objects all jumbled up together, I found an old bicycle seat right next to a rusty set of handlebars. In a flash, they joined together in my head. The idea of the Bull's Head came to me before I had a chance to think. All I did was weld them together... but if you were only to see the bull's head and not the bicycle seat and handlebars that form it, the sculpture would lose some of its impact.” Source: http://www.pablopicasso.org/bull­head.jsp 

Perhaps Picasso’s assembled sculpture can be seen as a reaction to the “readymade” sculpture of Marcel Duchamp, who was a contemporary of his in the art world. With Duchamp’s work, he places two unlike object together that mean nothing together.  With Picasso’s sculpture, he places two unlike objects together and it means something.

Bull , 1958

The cardboard guitar is part of the Museum of Modern Art Collection in 

New York City. 

 This sculpture of a guitar was created from an ordinary packing box. Can you see the metal staples and the folds in the cardboard from when the guitar was a box?  The use of ordinary cardboard to create a sculpture was a ground­breaking idea.  Cardboard was a non­traditional and unique art material. Traditional sculptures would have been carved in stone or wood or cast in metal.    

  

 Untitled, 1967, Chicago 

 Picasso was asked to create a sculpture for a plaza in Chicago.  An architect who worked on the Daley Center project, designing new office buildings in this downtown plaza, wrote Picasso a poem asked him to make the sculpture.  Picasso accepted.  Charitable donations paid for the construction of the project and Picasso refused payment for his work and donated it instead, considering it a gift to the people of Chicago.  The sculpture was constructed in by metal workers in Indiana and then moved on­site and installed.  This is the sculpture he created as it’s being unveiled for the first time.  All of the people are gathered to see the sculpture as it’s revealed for the first time.    Here in Walla Walla, at the Walla Walla Foundry, workers create sculptures and parts of metal sculptures, designed by famous artists, to be installed by workers on­site just like workers in Indiana created Pablo Picasso’s sculpture to be installed on­site in Chicago.

The sculpture is unnamed and is often referred to as the “Chicago Picasso” or “The Picasso”  Picasso never explained what the sculpture was meant to represent and many have come up with theories of their own.

Why is the title of this sculpture “Untitled?” 

 

 From a Chicago news story on the sculpture…  Spectator 1: Of course, everybody thinks it's a bird. Spectator 2: It looks like a horse. Or maybe a horse's end or something. Spectator 3: It looks kind of like a monster. Spectator 4: I think it looks like a bride. Spectator 5: It is an abstract expression. That's all it is. We should respect it as that.

  The sculpture is 50 ft tall and created in steel.  The untreated steel will weather over time, changing from cool gray to a red rust brown color.  The weather, whether it’s sunny or rainy, cold or warm, as well as the time of day also affect how the sculpture appears.  Sometimes it appears strong and bright and other times it seems dark and moody.   

  Looking at the sculpture from many different viewpoints also changes how it appears.  Sculpture is free­standing and is meant to be viewed from all sides.  A cubist painting, like the ones we looked at earlier, show many sides of something at the same time.  Like a sculpture within a painting.     

  

  The “Chicago Picasso” is well­loved and well­known by the people in the city.  It is a popular gathering spot, to meet, to have lunch, to work and to play.  What kind of sculptures well-known and well-loved in your hometown?
