Each year Pennsylvania DeMolay hosts a week long leadership conference called Key Man University, also known as KMU for short. This year, KMU will be held from August 5-11,2018 and located at the Masonic Conference Center, Patton Cam-

pus in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. You may be asking yourself “What is KeyMan?” KMU allows the members who attend to choose which area in DeMolay they would like to improve, in a fun yet educational environment. The departments are Communications & Media, Ritual & Performance, Event & Program Planning, Interpersonal Development, Chapter Leadership and Brotherhood & Membership. Members joining within 6 months can be part of the DeMolay Education department. KMU is open to DeMolays all over the United States and Canada. Registration is open now. It is not too late to apply so I hope to see you there. Ancora Imparo!

Convention is almost here, which means the members of PA DeMolay will be voting for their Elected

State Officers during the business session. Here are the candidates for office:

State Master Councilor: Tyler Moyer (Pilgrim) and Sean Reitze (Pilgrim)

Deputy State Master Councilor: Dylan Kirk (Westmoreland) and Andrew Santilli (Chester Pike)

State Senior Councilor: Jacob Reilly (al-Aksa) and James McKeown (Friendship-Bray)

State Junior Councilor: Kody Anderson (Elizabethtown) and Brandon Whited (Northeast)

State Scribe: Mitchell Holmes (Templar) and Andrew Caroselli (Friendship-Bray)

Implemented this year, candidates who are not elected will have the opportunity to drop down one

office. Good luck to all of the candidates. See you at Convention!

Ritual is a key component in our everyday DeMolay program. It’s how we open and close our meetings, bring in new members, and even make meaningful and sentimental presentations for our parents, friends, and guests to enjoy. However, in today’s day and age, it may seem drawn out and boring. Rather than delving into the discussion on ritual’s importance, I’m here to tell you that ritual can be FUN. You may be taken aback by this statement, but it’s true. While I enjoy the intentionally fun things that we do in DeMolay: such as paintball, go-karting, and sports, some of my fondest memories come from competing at and winning ritual tournaments. This past March, Brother Jake Beers and I took a trip to Arlington, Texas and represented Pennsylvania DeMolay at the Frank Marshall Championship Tournament. It was a huge tournament that attracted upwards of 150 DeMolays from more than ten jurisdictions. Going into it, I knew that it would be tough, and tough it was. While Jake and I only competed in three competitions between us, out of all of the competitions offered at the various levels, 90% of the champions scored above a 900 (out of 1,000) with most of the Champion level winners scoring in the 950+ category. For perspective, every word error and word addition is -5 points, so these competitors were winning with less than ten errors. Surprisingly, Jake and I finished pretty high in our ceremonies placing in the top ten for both. So while you may not want to or be able to go down to Texas for a weekend to give Ritual competitions a shot, there’s one in our backyard that you can try out. The seven jurisdictions in Region 2 come together to put on the Mid-Atlantic Tournament of Champions every year. It’s just like Frank Marshall but with brothers from our area. I strongly recommend that you all consider coming out to MATOC, whether to do an individual competition or team competition with your Chapter. This year it’s at the Eisenhower Convention Center in Gettysburg (where convention is) and will be taking place from September 7-9, 2018. For more information go to http://www.demolay-matoc.org, or contact “Dad” Peter Brusoe at [email protected]. Also, if you have any questions about the tournament or what parts to do, talk to your Chapter Advisor or feel free to ask one of you Elected State Officers.

Every year during July, Chapters around the globe observe the 7th Precept, Patriotism, as part of the My Government Day Observance. This Obligatory Day is designed to explain the government of the country, state, or community in which your Chapter is located. So, your Chapter could use this oppor-tunity to visit our state or nation’s capitol, recognize a government official and present them with a plaque or certificate, or tour a local government building just to name a few examples. One of my favorite My Government Day observances was few years ago in 2015, when Pilgrim Chapter made a trip to Washington DC. We went on a Big Bus tour of the Capitol, visited several Smithsonian muse-ums, and toured the National Archives. Your Chapter has the power to choose how you observe My Government Day -- whether it’s within Pennsylvania or beyond. Don’t be afraid to branch out beyond these examples and think outside the box this July!

The 2017-2018 term has been nothing short of successful in our efforts to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Centers of Pennsyl-vania. Recently, the Daytona 500 Charity Program drew efforts from across the state in a race to give back to our State Charity. In the end, Region H reached the $500 goal the fastest, as Regions G and E followed close behind. In total, proceeds donated during the program totaled at almost $5,000 - a fantastic showing by the Chapters of Pennsylvania DeMolay. Also, in the span of one month, Elizabethtown Chapter held two of its annual fundraisers - the Charity Chicken Pot Pie Dinner and Dodgeball for Dyslexia 4. The total amounts raised in these two events alone reached over seven thousand dollars thanks not only to Elizabethtown Chapter, but also Westmoreland, Carlisle, Pilgrim, and Friendship-Bray Chapters, all of whom participated in Dodgeball for Dyslexia 4. With all of this, Pennsylvania DeMolay has now reached $11,597.30 raised this year for the Children’s Dyslexia Centers of Pennsylvania. Thank you to all the Chapters that have donated for making this year a success.

Advisor Training Weekend

At the Pit-Stop for Leadership Weekend in January, Chapter Advisors and Chairmen were asked to take part in an Advisor training program that helped them understand more about their involved roles within the Chapter. With so much more to learn than the 2 hour time period allowed for, Executive Officer Greg Schaeffer decided to add an opportunity for an Advisor Training Weekend. The week-end will be held July 27-29 at the Masonic Conference Center in Elizabethtown. Each Chapter is asked to send no more than 2 Advisors. Chapter Advisors and Chairmen are encouraged, but are not required if a Chapter feels another

advisor can use the knowledge. Each Squire Manor is encouraged to sign up one Advisor as well, since most of the information will translate to both programs. This will be in conjunction with the State Officer Training Weekend. Contact the PA DeMolay office for more information, including registration details.
