Cereal packaging task
LI: To design the packaging for a new cereal aimed at children.
Did you know that the average person will eat half a ton of breakfast cereal in their
lifetime? UK customers spend £1.6bn per year on breakfast cereal. There is a huge
variety of cereals on offer. This is partly due to the fact that there are 8 different
ways to process cereal grains, from shredded whole grains, to flaked to oven puffed!
In a poll earlier this year, Crunchy Nut Cornflakes was voted as the UK’s most
popular cereal – do you agree?
Task 1 - find a cereal box in your kitchen to have a look at, or look at some boxes
online. Try to identify 6 different features or pieces of information that businesses
include on the box. For example, there is often a cartoon character which helps to
make the cereal appeal to children.
Task 2 - design the packaging for a new breakfast cereal aimed at children (7-13
years old). You can complete this task by printing out the template if you have a
printer and adding text and images, or just by drawing your design on paper.
Things to include in your design:
• Name of the cereal
• Picture of the cereal in a bowl and any cartoon character
• Bright colours in your design
• A short description/ slogan for the cereal e.g. All the goodness of oats!
• Any other features you found on the box you looked at, such as nutritional
information, a competition to win a prize, a recycling logo, or a QR-code to scan
to visit a website etc.
You will come to Business for 1 period a week in S1. During the year, you will
complete several units of work. The first unit is on Business Enterprise. In this unit
you will learn about all the issues involved in starting a small business, and you will
get to develop your own unique business idea! You will also study units on
Globalisation, Business Ethics and ICT.
You will develop lots of useful skills in Business such as teamwork, research,
problem-solving, decision-making, creativity and employability.
The Business team is really looking forward to welcoming you to the department
after the summer holiday. In the meantime, here is a task to get you thinking about
some business ideas…
Computing
In S1, we start by looking at Digital Literacy. This topic is about getting used to using desktop
PCs and looking after yourself when you are online. We then move on to Scratch
programming which involves lots of problem solving skills in order to make maze, archery
and bat and ball games and create your own game or animation. We also look at Computer
Systems – how does the inside of a computer actually work? How pictures and text are
stored in 1s and 0s. We return for some more programming practise with the BBC Microbits
– little chips that can display text and simple pictures and respond to inputs. Finally, we
usually finish the year by creating a Theme Park Website which uses Literacy skills.
Task
Google “Hour of Code Moana/ Frozen/ Star Wars/ Minecraft or Angry Birds” and complete
the tasks to get a flavour of programming.

Red Bull is an Austrian company which produces the worlds best selling energy drink. There are many health concerns about potential damage energy drinks can cause and I would not recommend or promote them in any way but one really positive thing that Red Bull do is promote and sponsor extreme and adventure sports. Every year Red Bull run a fun soapbox competition in cities around the world open to everyone. You will design your very own “Red Bull” soapbox …
