Crashworthy Rear Bumper System THE IMPORTANCE OF BUMPER SYSTEM AND CURRENT ISSUES

In automobiles, a bumper is the front-most or rear-most part designed to allow the car to sustain an impact without damage to the

vehicle's safety systems. Bumpers are not capable of reducing injury to vehicle occupants in high-speed impacts, but are

increasingly being designed to mitigate injury to pedestrians struck by cars. A conventional automotive bumper structure comprises

of the following:

• Hollow bumper beam extending in a width-wise direction of a vehicle

• A pair of left and right stays fixed to vehicle body

• A supporting bumper beam

• A smart key sensor

The conventional bumper is less safety; therefore a team of researchers has designed a bumper system that focuses on the

passenger safety. A feature of the invention is that it can absorb the impact energy and dissipate it into internal energy of the

bumper beam, foams and ribs.

The technology is a rear bumper system that is lightweight and

crashworthy. It is lightweight and safe. Some features of the

invention include:

• A bumper beam coupled to the inner side of the bumper

for absorbing impact energy from the bumper and

eventually distributing the impact energy along the

bumper beam

• A pair of crash housing coupled to the bumper beam for

further absorbing the impact energy from the bumper

beam

• Vertical ribs arranged along the bumper beam for

strengthening it

The prototype is designed for Proton cars, but it is customisable

to all type of passengers vehicles.

Patent has been filed to protect the invention in Malaysia since 2012.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The inventor would like to meet industry players for pre-commercialisation activities as below: -

• Fabricate the prototype vehicle

• Test for impact, endurance, crash test

• Develop off-the-shelf bumper

CONTACT

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES

• Light-weight and high

crashworthiness

• Consists of a foam box - for

crashworthiness

• The bumper system has ribs

• High occupant safety – head

injury criterion values have

been tested and proven

• The bumper is made up of

aluminum and steel

THE INNOVATION

• Automobile Industry (passenger vehicles)

• NGV Worldwide

TARGET MARKET Based on market analysis, vehicle sales in Asia Pacific reached

30 million units in 2011, with sales growing nearly 13% annually

between 2000 and 2011. In ASEAN, Malaysia is the third

biggest car market with 3 car manufacturers, 8 car assemblers,

9 motor assemblers and more than 800 component

manufacturers and employs more than 300,000 people. In 2011

the total production of motor vehicles amounted to 533,515 units

of passenger vehicles and 45,254 of commercial vehicles.
