Teen’s racecar ambitionROBERT STEVEN
Winning driving simulator races since he was 11, Faine Kahia is planning a career as a professional racecar driver.
Racing Formula One isn’t Faine
Kahia’s dream – but it is his goal.
The Taupo teenager has been
winning and placing in races
since the age of 11.
Most recently, the 19-year-old
secured two second places at the
Formula BMW Asia Cup in
Malaysia.
Next he hopes to race in the
Formula 4 South East Asia Cham-
pionship, which starts in August.
Kahia said success in thisseries could put his career on afast track.
‘‘If I do really well, I’ll get a testin Formula Renault, which is ahigher series,’’ he said.
‘‘If I do well in the FormulaRenault, it’ll pretty much be [timeto] sign on the dotted line, and I’llsign my life away – which is agood thing.’’
Kahia’s goal is to secure a con-
tract with a car manufacturer andrace for them as a professionalmotorsport athlete.
‘‘Wake up, go race the car, andgo home at night, and get paid forit,’’ he said.
‘‘I don’t like to say dreamsbecause dreams never happen.Goals happen,’’ he said.
The teenager is planning tocopy the career pathway taken byEarl Bamber and Brendon Hart-ley.
Now contracted to race for
Porsche, the Kiwi drivers both
started on the ‘Asian pathway’ –
racing in South East Asia.
Practising on a track is very
expensive, so like most profes-
sional drivers, Kahia spends a lot
of time racing in a driving simu-
lator at home.
‘‘Prior to driving a V8 supercar
yesterday, I had already done 500
laps around Taupo racetrack in
that very same V8 supercar. Same
supercar, same racetrack, sameeverything.’’
Since finishing school atTaupo-nui-a-Tia College, Kahiasaid all his time was devoted totraining, marketing himself andlooking for sponsorship.
Kahia said he would not forgethis roots.
‘‘I’m born and bred Taupo. Abig thing for me is bringing itback home. I love my town and Iget homesick whenever I’maway."

YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE
FROM
THE
EDITOR
The reason I enjoy living inmedium-sized towns likeTaupo is that you get the
best of both worlds. On the one hand, you get
access to everything you need – aselection of retailers, goodentertainment options and avariety of people with a fullspectrum of interests.
Our town is not so big thatwhen someone is hurting or needshelp then we don’t take ownershipof that. There are plenty of peoplewho step up and help someone onthe other side of town – becausethey’re our people.
Take today’s page 3 story aboutElyse for example. That familyhas already been on the receivingend of this sort of communityspirit since before we gotinvolved. No doubt, today’s storywill speak to plenty of otherpeople too.
Having said that, there areplenty of people out there whoaren’t aware of the inherentgenerosity of most people. I hopethose people have the courage totell someone what they are goingthrough too.

Taupo girl Elyse has an aggressive brain tumour and less than 12 months to
live. Her family wants to make it the best 12 months possible.

Two Taupo parents received theworst news possible after a visitto Starship Hospital, when theywere told their daughter Elyse(2) has less than 12 months tolive.
Elyse was diagnosed with anaggressive, golf ball sized, tumour on her brain stem onApril 9 this year.
Surgeons then told the familyit was inoperable.
‘‘We went to the doctorswhen she started vomiting,’’Elyse’s grandmother JacquiJohnson said.
‘‘The doctors couldn’t seewhat was wrong.
‘‘Then she stopped walkingand talking and we got in frontof a specialist. From there it wasMRI’s at Rotorua and trips toStarship Hospital where thenews was given.’’
There was an option of radi-ation therapy for Elyse.
‘‘That would have requiredan hospital visit and she wouldbe sick with it,’’ Johnson said.
‘‘In the end her parentsdecided it could extend her lifeby about six weeks and it wastoo much to put her through.
‘‘It was decided to bring herhome.’’
Johnson says Elyse is ashappy as she can be and thefamily has been humbled by themembers of the Taupo com-
munity that have rallied behindtheir family in their time ofneed.
Shortly after hearing thenews a family friend started aGivealittle page for Elyse to helpthe family pay for bills and giveElyse the best year they can.
The page has alreadyreceived more than $5000.
‘‘It has been very humbling, and overwhelming the amountof support we have received,’’Johnson said.
Johnson said the money willbe used to take Elyse to medical
appointments and take her onactivities or adventures.
‘‘We’re over crying and nowit is all about making sure shehas the best year she can,’’ John-son said.
‘‘Her parents are no longerworking and just spending asmuch time as they can withher.’’
If you would like to helpElyse and her family, donations are still beingtaken at givealittle.co.nz/cause/littlelyse.

Gondola plan proposedMATT SHAND
Ever thought how cool it wouldbe to take a gondola up the top ofMount Pihanga to a top-classrestaurant to take in the views?
Tuatea Smallman has and hewants to turn that dream, andothers, into a reality.
If completed the project willsee a 6.5km gondola ride to thesummit of Mount Pihangawhere a revolving floor res-taurant will give stunning
vistas of the surroundings.Smallman said the project
will have many challenges buthe is not one to shy away fromthat, especially if it meansputting Turangi on the worldstage.
‘‘Its just what this areaneeds,’’ he said.
‘‘We are currently looking atfinance options for the projectand we have engineers ready tofly in and check out MountPihanga to assess if construc-
tion is safe near the crater.’’Smallman is not stopping
there with plans to create acanal connecting the TongariroRiver to Lake Taupo on GraceRoad, with luxury apartmentsflanking it, and a 22km walkingtrack along the KaimanawaRange.

Noel Bennett received a $2000 voucher.
Noel Bennett received a $2000 surprise for hiscommitment to junior athletics this week after hewas nominated as a Lotto Sportmaker.
Bennett has been involved in running the Jun-ior Athletic Club since he arrived in Taupo in1971.
‘‘I’ve always been involved in athletics and itmade sense to join up with those clubs,’’ he said.
Although not having children himself, hasshown dedication and care for the young childrenon the club beyond most parents.
One of his responsibilities is the accuratemarking out of Taupo’s track, one of the fewremaining grass athletic tracks in New Zealand, which the club is very proud of.
‘‘It can be a painstaking process and can takeabout four or five hours for the initial marking,’’he said.
Seeing young people reach their potentialthrough running is something Bennett enjoys see-ing as a volunteer.
‘‘We had Bevan Docherty run with us,’’ he said.‘‘Patrick Bevan was another and then he was
told to try out cycling, which was the right thingto do.
‘‘So you never know who is coming through.’’Bennet was nominated for the award by Mur-
ray Reid and he had no idea when he was asked tocome to the clubrooms what he would be receiv-ing.
‘‘I have been injured so wasn’t sure why theyneeded me at the clubrooms,’’ he said.
‘‘They stitched me up well.‘‘I was blown away. When you are involved in
clubs you put buy things here and there and youdon’t mid because you love doing it but here I amgetting something back.’’
The $2000 can be used by Bennett to purchasesporting goods and clothing for himself or theclubs he is part of.
Sport Waikato district coordinator said Ben-nett is a very deserving candidate for this award.
‘‘It’s such a big thing to win and great thanksgo to Noel, and the Murray for taking the time tomake the nomination,’’ she said.
‘‘Without the nominations there would be noawards.’’ Bennett is planning to spend some timecelebrating his success on his upcoming trip toRarotonga before returning to continue helpingthe club.

Consent declined forchurch buildingROBERT STEVEN
Putting forward the case for Taupo Bible Church’s proposed church building
on Herapeka St last month were surveyor Sue Slegers from property
development company Taupo Central, church treasurer Euan Fergusen, and
church pastor Jerry Craven. Tony Watson, a neighbour opposed to the new
church, delivers his submission to the resource consent hearing in the
foreground. PHOTO: ROBERT STEVEN/FAIRFAX NZ
Taupo Bible Church’s appli-cation to build a 730sqm churchbuilding at the end of aNukuhau cul-de-sac has beendeclined.
Commissioner Bill Wasleyreleased his decision onThursday.
In his report conclusion hewrote that the effect of adversetraffic ‘‘on the safety andefficiency’’ of the street couldnot be ‘‘adequately mitigated’’.
‘‘Notwithstanding the con-ditions offered by the applicantand that Ms Wood concurs withsuch conditions, I am of theopinion that some of these con-ditions such as the use of trafficwardens are not practicable andthat there will be a more thanminor effect on Herapeka Streetthrough on street parking andincreased traffic alongHerapeka Street.
‘‘Whilst at some stage it maybecome a ‘through’ street, it iscurrently a residential cul-de-sac and is currently totally resi-dential in character,’’ the reportsaid.
The report said mattersrelated to property values andprivate covenants on the titleswere not resource managementconsiderations, and beyond thecommissioner’s jurisdiction toconsider.
The report follows a hearing
on March 15 where both oraland written submission to com-missioner Wasley.
Church pastor Jerry Cravensaid he would speak with thechurch congregation beforemaking comment.
Resident Jackie Robinson, who works as an architecturaldesigner, submitted in oppo-sition to the proposal.
She said the outcome came
down to a practical decision.‘‘Commissioner Wasley’s
decision to decline resourceconsent for the church is not anoutcome in which to boastvictory, but to celebrate thatresident’s rights have beenacknowledged, considered andprotected by a planning processwhich is in place for such con-flict in belief. The residents arerelieved.

Minister has new angleChanges to the regulatory pro-cess for the Lake Taupo troutfishery will make managementmore responsive according toConservation Minister MaggieBarry.
Daily bag and fish size limitswill soon be solely approved bythe Minister of Conservationinstead of going through theCabinet process.
‘‘The new process will makeit easier to respond to the natu-ral year-by-year changes in fishsize and abundance,’’ Barry
said.‘‘Currently, this takes too
long and is a cause of some frus-tration for anglers.
‘‘What it means is that in ayear where there are more troutspawning we can raise the baglimit to allow anglers to catchmore – and likewise, in a yearwhere fish are smaller on aver-age we can reduce the size limitto protect breeding stock andsafeguard the fishery.’’
Fishing regulation changesfor Taupo can also now be
published as Gazette anglernotices, as happens in all otherNew Zealand trout fisheries.
‘‘The Taupo Fishery Advis-ory Committee, TuwharetoaMaori Trust Board and theTaupo angling community haveall been supportive of thischange,’’ Barry says.
Gazetted today, the newregulations will take effect fromMay 19. The trout fishery isworth $11 million a year to theTaupo economy and supportsaround 300 jobs.

Businesses meeting challengesZANE COZENS
Zane Cozens
‘‘Any businessperson has the rightto make strategicand logisticaldecisions toguarantee that theirbusinesses are wellpositioned.
I write in response to the articleregarding the Turangi Mall thatfeatured in your paper [P3, April15].
The Turangi Central BusinessDistrict has for many years facedchanging dynamics with thetownship growing out of itsMinistry of Works infancy intothe tourist centre of some 3000permanent residents that is today– plus a further 3000 in our widercatchement.
I can confirm that of the 49floor level commercial unitsavailable in the Mall [excludingcouncil offices and Library], 32are currently occupied, 16 areempty whilst a further unit has aparty in the process of conductinga shop fit-out.
This means that we have a 66per cent occupancy rate in theMall itself so far more are fullrather than empty.
On the periphery of the CBD,private development has meantthat some businesses haverelocated from the Mall to thefringes seeking greater foot trafficand a higher profile rather than asreported, moving away from townaltogether.
Any business person has theright to make strategic andlogistical decisions to guaranteethat their businesses are wellpositioned for the future.
As a Councillor, in partnershipwith Christine Dally and WayneSmith of Go Tongariro, we arekeen to see a Feasibility studyundertaken of the Town Centre.Only when this is complete willwe have a sound understanding ofwhat viable options are before usand the challenges we might faceas a community.
We need to acknowledge thatpersonal shopping habits arediversifying with the increasingpresence of the digital age. So to,
must we embrace our changingpopulation demographics andonly once we have all of thisinformation in our headspace, will we truly know how torespond so as to ensure thecontinued positive outcomes for
our town. There is far greater positivity
amongst the local businesscommunity than was reportedand words such as ‘helplessness’would be ones never heard in myearshot. Many of our companiesare booming – probably too manyto mention here – but successstories are commonplace.
Let it be said, we aren’t perfectbut we are a unified positive town, our future is very bright and weare moving forward with focus.

Sales reduce Taupo debtMATT SHAND
More than $5.1 million worth ofproperty has been sold off by theTaupo District Council since2015 in a bid to reduce thetown’s debt.
Council figures reveal$5,276,631 worth of property hasbeen sold, or has gone uncon-ditional, which is more than the$3.7 million target set by coun-cil.
Taupo mayor DavidTrewavas said council was
capitalising on the buoyantproperty market at this time aspeople are seeing Taupo as agreat investment.
‘‘It’s really about takingadvantage of the times and thelow interest rates at themoment,’’ he said.
‘‘People are seeing Taupo as along term investment.
‘‘We’ve had some big salesout by Mitre 10 Mega which hasboosted the numbers.’’
While most of the sales arefrom council owned
subdivisions, there are a num-ber of big ticket sales on thebooks including a $960,000 saleat 29 Tuwharetoa Street and$500,000 at 17 Broadlands Road.
Trewavas said all moneyfrom property sales would gointo reducing debt.
With council purchasinglarge chunks of land after theconstruction of the EasternArterial Route Trewavas saidthere was still about $100million worth of property avail-able to sell.

Why is my hairgetting thinner?
There are a number of reasons why your hair may be thinning, including iron
and vitamin D deficiency.

Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY
I’ve recently noticed that myhair has started thinning. Inormally have very thick hair,my hairdresser mentioned thereis often nutritional reasonsbehind hair thinning – is thereany truth in that? With thanks,Lesley.
Hi Lesley. It is certainlynormal to lose some hair daily –however, there are a number ofreasons why your hair may bethinning, here are a few:
Iron deficiency anaemiaBeing low or deficient in iron
can lead to hair loss. Symptoms ofiron deficiency anaemia caninclude fatigue, weakness andpale skin. You may also noticeheadaches, difficultyconcentrating, cold hands and feetand hair loss. Iron deficiencyessentially sends your body intosurvival mode, so your bodychannels oxygen to support vitalfunctions as opposed to what itdeems non vital – like keeping
your hair intact. The best way tocheck your iron status is to seeyour GP for an iron studies test.
HypothyroidismHypothyroidism is a condition
in which the body lacks sufficientthyroid hormones; it can result ina host of symptoms includingunexplained weight gain, fatigue, constipation, depression anddifficulty concentrating. Hair, nails and skin may become morebrittle and break more easily, andhair loss is also common.
Omega 3 fatty acidsIn order to have healthy hair
and avoid hair loss, we need tomake sure that we are gettingenough of the right nutrients inour diets, including omega 3 fattyacids. Adding more of these fattyacids to your diet can help toprevent hair loss and evenencourage hair to grow healthier.Omega 3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties, whichcan help to open the hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth.
When the body is not receivingsufficient nutrients, the hairs thatare lost regularly each day areless likely to be replaced, and hairloss is more likely.
Vitamin DLow Vitamin D levels interfere
with healthy hair folliclesregenerating. Again, this can beassessed via a blood test.
There can also be physicalreasons such as excessive styling, straightening and dying, whichcan lead to hair loss. Heat andsome chemicals can weaken thehair, causing it to break and fallout. If your hair loss is consistent
it’s best to seek individualisedadvice from a health professional.I don’t have time to eat/preparegood quality meals, what areyour quick fix ideas that arenutritious for my family and I?Thank you – Fiona
Hi Fiona. Firstly, I do believethat in general, we need toundergo a priority check. While Iappreciate that many of us arejuggling many different thingsdaily, there is nothing on earththat replaces the power of anourishing diet.
Preparing real food does take
more time, but it is time we haveto allow for in our day. When wesay ‘‘I don’t have time’’ what weare essentially saying is ‘‘it’s not apriority for me.’’
How does that make you feelwhen you say, preparing anourishing dinner is not apriority for me? The reality is wecannot compromise our nutritionand expect to still have fantastichealth.
In saying all of that though, there are a number of ways youcan add nourishment to yourmeals that don’t take much time. For example, chop up a mixture ofgreens, spinach, kale and herbsand stir them through a stir-fry,salad, or soup – this is a great wayto add a little nourishmentbooster.
Prepare big batches of mealson the weekend and freeze themor stick to one-pot/pan mealspacked full of vegetables.
I cannot encourage you enoughto explore how to make having anourishing meal a priority foryou. You are worth taking care of!

Don’t get caughtbuying a dud carKATE SLUKA
Make sure you have done all the right
research before you purchase a car.
Before you hit the car yards, dothe hard yards and understandyour rights and what you shouldbe checking for. We have fivesteps you should work through:
1. General inspection – use ourcar inspection checklist availableon the consumer.org.nz website. The car should be in a well-litarea, clean and dry, so you don’tmiss defects.
2. Test drive – take it for a drivefor about half an hour and includesome driving at open road speeds, and some hill work for checkinggears and brakes.
3. Mechanical inspection – ifyou pay a specialist inspectionservice or your own mechanic, they’re required under the CGAto do the job to a reasonable stan-dard. A pre-purchase inspectionwill cost up to $120.
Whatever work the dealeragrees to do, get it in writingbefore you sign up or pay any-thing, even a deposit.
4. Paperwork – there’s a lot ofdocumentation you shouldn’toverlook; warrant of fitness, con-sumer information notice (CIN),certificate of registration, out-standing debts, sale agreement, change of ownership. Ourchecklist has the details.
5. Finance – dealer finance canbe more expensive than a bank. Ifyou’re a home owner, you mightwant to consider extending yourmortgage. With any loan offer, check the time to repay, repay-ment amounts and the total cost ofcredit over the term of the loan.
All lenders must provide thisinformation to you. If the deal isinterest-free, check for extra feesand that the asking price hasn’tbeen inflated.
And if the wheels fall off thedeal and you and the dealer can’tcome to an agreement on how tofix things, you have the option oftaking a claim to the MotorVehicle Disputes Tribunal, or theregular Disputes Tribunal if youbought from a private seller.
So, happy motoring.I’m off to take my mum for a
drive in my – okay, partially her –new car.
For information on car buyers’rights and our car buying guide,as well as thousands of indepen-dent test results and research on awide range of products andservices go to consumer.org.nz.

Power to save in your hands
ROBERT STEVEN

T STEVEN/FAIRFA
X NZ
Taupo people saved millions of
dollars in power costs last year.
The Electricity Authority
estimates $3,274,528 was saved by
2274 households and businesses
which changed power companies
in 2014.
This saved them an average of
$245 each, according to the stat-
istics.
New to Taupo, young couple
Pipa Kernot and Shaun Rogers
changed to Genesis Energy this
year.
This allowed them to take
advantage of a one-month-free
offer for signing a 12-month con-
tract.
The deal helped them to keep
the bill in check, Kernot said.
‘‘Because we’re in credit, I’m
not always having to top up the
account.
‘‘I pay weekly, so we don’t get
lumped with a huge bill either.’’
Electricity Authority chief
executive Carl Hansen said
because of the competitive market
in New Zealand, electricity com-
panies offered a wide range of
deals, and it was important to be
aware of them.
‘‘Waikato residents are using
more power, with average resi-
dential consumption seeing the
highest increase in New Zealand,
at 4.1 per cent.
‘‘In this environment, it is
important that consumers shop
around and check they are on the
best deal for them.’’
Records showed more than
385,000 household switched
energy providers in 2014. If all eli-
gible Kiwi households had
switched to the cheapest provider,
they could have saved $281
million nationwide,’’ Hansen said.
‘‘As winter really starts to take
a hold, now is the right time to
check your plan.
‘‘Even if you’ve switched
providers in the past, we encour-
age all consumers to regularly
check, as offers change.
Two new retailers – Energy
Direct and Flick Energy – entered
the Waikato energy market last
year, making 17 providers avail-
able, depending on the area.
The choice of retailer did not
make a difference to the
reliability of power supply, Han-
sen said.
‘‘Those outcomes are affected
by the performance of [the] local
distribution network and by
Transpower, and is the same
regardless of which retailer con-
sumers choose.’’
Kernot said house design had
an effect on energy use and the
family lived in a two-storey 1950s
house when they first arrived in
Taupo four months ago.
A gas heater on the top level
was the only heating and cold,
damp air was terrible for her
asthma-suffering son Rhyli
Rhyli described that house as
‘‘very, very, very miserable’’.
A newer house the family
moved into recently was an
improvement, Kernot said.
With a wood fire and an HRV
system that pushes the warm air
throughout the house, the family
were much happier, she said.
‘‘Rhyli feels very strong
carrying the wood in for mum
too.’’
