From the Director's DeskEffective Leadership : Selected Teachings of

Swami Vivekananda:As with most popular sayings, there is some truth in the adage, “Great leaders are born, not made.” To some extent, the capacity for great leadership is innate. However, learning how to be a more effective leader is within everyone's grasp – whether you lead multiple teams, an entire company or just one staff member.

Leadership Qualities Everyone Can Use

Here are a few of the qualities and traits of great leaders that you can learn and practice:

Self-assessment: Effective leaders periodically take stock of their personal strengths and shortcomings. They ask: “What do I like to do? What am I really good at?” “What are my areas of weakness, and what do I dislike doing?” Knowing your areas of weakness does not make you weak; on the contrary, it allows you to delegate to others who have those abilities, in order to achieve the common goal. Rather than clinging to the false belief that they can do it all, great leaders hire people who complement, rather than supplement, their skills. Working on your areas of weaknesses will improve your leadership ability – and recognizing them makes you more human.

Sharp perception: Do you know how people really perceive you? Effective leaders do. They have an easy level of honest communication with their teams and their peers, and a thorough understanding of how they are perceived. Testing others' perception of you can be as simple as observing their behavior. Are your co-workers and team members relaxed around you? Does all conversation stop when you enter the room?If you really want to know what people think, just ask them. You may receive feedback that you're not listening or showing appreciation as well as you could be. If you've established an environment of honest and open communication, you should be able to ask about your good qualities and the areas you need to improve on. Your staff will appreciate your effort.

Responsive to the group's needs: Being perceptive can also help a leader be more effective in knowing the needs of the team. Some teams value trust over creativity; others prefer a clear communicator to a great organizer. Building a strong team is easier when you know the values and goals of each individual, as well as what they need from you as their leader.

Knowing the organization: Effective leaders know the organization's overall purpose and goals, and the agreed-upon strategies to achieve these goals; they also know how their team fits into the big picture,

My ideal, indeed, can be put into a few words, and that is: to preach unto mankind their divinity, and how to make it manifest in every movement of life. Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man. We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one's own feet. So long as the millions live in hunger and ignorance, I hold every man a traitor who, having been educated at their expense, pays not the least heed to them. Whatever you think, that you will be. If you think yourselves weak, weak you will be; if you think yourselves strong, strong you will be.

If you have faith in all the three hundred and thirty millions of your mythological gods, … and still have no faith in yourselves, there is no salvation for you. Have faith in yourselves, and stand up on that faith and be strong; that is what we need. Strength, strength it is that we want so much in this life, for what we call sin and sorrow have all one cause, and that is our weakness. With weakness comes ignorance, and with ignorance comes misery. The older I grow, the more everything seems to me to lie in manliness. This is my new Gospel. Purity, patience, and perseverance are the three essentials to success, and above all, love.

and the part they play in helping the organization grow and thrive. Full knowledge of your organization – inside and out – is vital to becoming an effective leader.

Learning Negotiation, Team Building, Motivation and Goal Setting Skills -

Today's business professionals know that in order to achieve success, they must commit to lifelong learning and skill building.

Communication – Good communication skills are required at every level of business, but leaders must possess outstanding communication skills. Luckily, this is a skill that can be learned.

Motivating teams – Inspiring others is the mark of an effective leader. Motivation is best done by example and guidance, not by issuing commands.

Team building – Putting together strong teams that work well is another trait of great leaders. The opposite is also true: if a team is weak and dysfunctional, it is generally a failure in leadership.

Risk taking – You can learn how to assess risk and run scenarios that will help you make better decisions. Great leaders take the right risks at the right time.

Vision and goal setting – A team depends on its leader to tell them where they are going, why they are going, and how they're going to get there. People are more motivated when a leader articulates his or her vision for a project or for the organization, along with the steps – or goals – needed to achieve it.

Consilium 2K15 ... Plea to remove asbestos from roof

This encourages Engineering students to showcase their understanding and talent and get appreciated.

The program started with a customary lighting of the lamp by all guests along with in inaugural address by Mr. Sunil Kishorepuria – Director, Sagar Business Private Limited. This year's Consilium had 6 teams participating in two major groups – Macro and Micro categories. Jury members this year were Mr. S.P Samantaray, Chief General Engineer, Eastern Railways, Mr. Sagendra Mahapatra, Chairman, Indian Institute of Architects and Mr. Rahul Mishra, Regional Sales Manager (East), Tubes, Tata Steel Limited. All participating teams were given slots to make their presentations and were judged by the Jury. There was a Q & A session after each presentation. The level of thinking and passion showing by the budding engineers we appreciable.

After the completion of all presentations the Jury discussed and came up with their results. The Second Runner Up, Runner Up and Winners of each category were announced. Trophies, Certificates and Cash Awards to winners were also distributed. The group really enjoyed and appreciated a platform provided by Sagar Business Private Limited. The program was well coordinated by Ms. Vidya from Ethos.

Calcutta high court on Wednesday admitted a petition against the use of asbestos and asphalt on the terrace of the second floor of the main court building. The petition was moved by Ashis Mitra, a resident of Tarak Dutta Road in Kolkata.

Mitra had written to PWD and high court registrars on April 12, seeking removal of carcinogenic asbestos and asphalt from the roof of the court. He moved the petition after no steps were taken.

Asbestos and asphalt are used on the roofs of at least 10 courtrooms, as well as the portico outside, five Bar Association rooms, the Bar Library, study room of the Bar Association and the department of 1st Assistant Registrar. The carcinogenic material poses a health risk to litigants, judges and lawyers, the petitioner pointed out.

“Exposure to asbestos causes a range of diseases, like lung cancer, mesothelioma (a cancer of the pleural and peritoneal linings), and asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs). All forms of asbestos are carcinogenic to humans.

According to the most recent WHO estimates, more than 1,07,000 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Approximately half of the deaths from occupational cancer are estimated to be caused by asbestos,“ advocate Phiroze Edulji submitted on Mitra's behalf.

Justice Dipankar Datta observed that the matter is very serious and placed it for hearing on June 7. “If the determination is changed till then, there will be no problem. If not, I shall release the matter on that date as I am a member of the building committee of the court,“ the judge said.

Tata Structura Dealers.....

and raise the bar. Mr. Sriyash Kishorepuria also launched the Tata Structura Website and gave all the Dealers a real time demonstration on how to use the site.

A much awaited Loyalty Program – “Bandhan” for Dealers was launched and hopefully this will encourage and motivate all dealers to put in extra effort and qualify and win the rewards. Winners of 'Structura New Year Celebration - Holiday Trip' were invited on stage and the packages they had won were given away amidst appreciation and applaud from the audience. A few Dealers who have newly appointed and have joined the family recently were called on stage and Dealer Certificates were handed over to them as a welcome note to the family.

The most coveted part was the Performance Awards which started after that and each winner were called on stage and given away

the awards by Tata Steel guests. All the winners who won the awards were visibly very happy and excited. A platform of rewards and recognition of this type is a great motivator. This event was followed up by a cake cutting ceremony celebrating '10 years of Tata Structura'. All the Dealers were invited on stage to be a part of it and also had a photo session. Mr. Sunil Kishorepuria gave the vote of thanks and thanked all for their presence and participation.

The evening ended with a cultural program by singers – Navya and Ashutosh Mohanty and their troop of dancers. The singers enthralled the audience with their array of popular numbers and medleys. It was a great scene to see the audience totally involved and dancing on the stage and enjoying the evening. Cocktail and dinner followed and the program came to an end.

CHALLENGETHE HARDER THE CONFLICT,

THE MORE GLORIOUS THE TRIUMPH.

Significance of Dola Purnima in Odisha

On our employee benefit activity front - the family health insurance coverage scheme from ICICI Prudential is now active. Details and cards have already been handed over to all employees. God forbid this should not ever happen but incase of hospitalisation treatment in the year you can now avail expenditures upto the coverage amount. An employee awareness presentation is being organised this Saturday (4th June) which will explain the details and benefits. Accident Benefit Insurance for all employees is now active. Our kitchen is now completely operational and is in full swing and it is heartening to see the team having lunch together.

Lastly targets this month onwards will look steep and hard but definitely achievable. Please take help of Mr. Manish Jain where ever required and ensure the show goes on irrespective and against all odds. Communicate with me at any point in time and in difficulties, please reach for help without fail. It is better to try one's best and go down (if at all) rather than not trying and going down. You may always regret it later. This is the least that I can expect and please do not leave any stone unturned to get your achievement at a raised level this month. There should not be any slackening it the efforts and that will very clearly show in the results this month. Your results will quantify your efforts.

God Bless and God Speed !

Sunil Kishorepuria Managing Director

So the second month of the year is gone by and hopefully we all are coming to terms with the task ahead of us. Exactly ten months to go for the year to end. Each of our existing verticals needs to now start to step on the full throttle mode and maximise efforts and business. ABPs for all verticals are now frozen. The clock has started and already ticking. A month from now there may be a slack in demand due to rain. Hence the maximum needs to be achieved now and in this month so that the marginal shortage in business can be set right. Please pull up and let us start the action and get noticed. From new verticals which we have started shortly now is the time to start and pick up quickly. Just remember a flight just prior to take off. It runs on the tarmac for some time. Gets ready in all respect and waits for the signal. It starts with all its force and energy possible so that it pushes against the invisible barriers (gravitation /wind) in front and takes off from the ground into the sky. This process takes all its energy and force and once it reaches its required height in the sky, it just glides. Similar to it is the task at hand for the new ones. This is the most difficult part and once we pass this stage of taking off there is no other task more difficult. Taking off well and reaching a height is the task at hand right now. With all the Teams of new verticals on board, I hope there will be no looking back and it is time to take off. The Escorts Tractor team has just emulated what I have articulated above and I am confident the Team will end up with the annual numbers well before the year ends. This was their first month of operation and they have shown how it can lift off the ideal way.

“Nayi Soch Naya Josh” - New Thoughts- New Passion.... now needs to be internalised and lived. Please understand this is a process and if each one in their area of operation imbibes this and puts it in practise, it will help in making 'excellence' an achievement on a regular basis. I again reiterate this is one thing that will definitely bring a difference in your own self and the organisation at large. Your work becomes more enjoyable if you look at handling it with passion and a new though and not just as a task at hand.

Editorial Selected Teachings .....

Religion is realization; not talk, not doctrine, nor theories, however beautiful they may be. It is being and becoming, not hearing or acknowledging; it is the whole soul becoming changed into what it believes.

Religion is the manifestation of the Divinity already in man. Teach yourselves, teach everyone his real nature, call upon the sleeping soul and see how it awakes. Power will come, glory will come, goodness will come, purity will come, and everything that is excellent will come when this sleeping soul is roused to self-conscious activity.· They alone live who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive. This is the gist of all worship – to be pure and to do good to others. It is love and love alone that I preach, and I base my teaching on the great Vedantic truth of the sameness and omnipresence of the Soul of the Universe.

WORKING TOGETHER IS

-HENRY FORD

Personality refers to an individual's characteristics, style, behaviour, mindset, attitude, his own unique way of perceiving things and seeing the world. Genetic factors, family backgrounds, varied cultures, environment, current situations play an imperative role in shaping one's personality. The way you behave with others reflects your personality. An individual with a pleasing personality is appreciated and respected by all.

Effective Communication skills play a crucial role in honing one's personality. Communication helps individuals to express themselves in the most convincing way. Your thoughts, feelings and knowledge should be passed on in the most desirable manner and effective communication skills help you in the same.

A person should speak really well to make a mark of his/her own. Remember, no one would take you seriously if you do not master the art of expressing yourself clearly and in the most convincing manner.

Not all people are blessed with excellent communication skills; they acquire the same with time and practice. People with great communication skills tend to have a better and impressive personality than those who have problems in communicating as interacting with others is not a challenge for them. Individuals with effective communication skills can easily converse with other people around be it their fellow workers, peers, family and so on.

Abraham Maslow is well renowned for proposing the Hierarchy of Needs Theory in 1943. This theory is a classical depiction of human motivation. This theory is based on the assumption that there is a hierarchy of five needs within each individual. The urgency of these needs varies. These five needs are as follows-

1. Physiological needs- These are the basic needs of air, water, food, clothing and shelter. In other words, physiological needs are the needs for basic amenities of life.

2. Safety needs- Safety needs include physical, environmental and emotional safety and protection. For instance- Job security, financial security, protection from animals, family security, health security, etc.

Effective communication skills strengthen the bond among individuals. It is also said to improve the interpersonal relationships with other people.

Careful selection of words is essential for effective communication skills. You really need to know what you are speaking. You never know what might hurt the other person. Never even think of being rude to anyone.

Speak convincingly so that the other person understands what you intend to communicate. Your style of speaking has a tremendous impact on your personality. Speaking slowly always helps as it allows you to find appropriate words and also reflects thoughtfulness. Emphasize important and relevant words for the other person to realize the importance.

Speaking confidently is the key to an impressive and great personality. Do not show signs of nervousness while interacting with others. There is no point of being nervous unless and until you yourself are not sure of what you are speaking. Develop proper eye contact with the other person. Do not look around while interacting with the other person.

Take care of your body language. Correct body language exudes confidence which further hones an individual's personality. Do not fiddle with things around while speaking.

3. Social needs- Social needs include the need for love, affection, care, belongingness, and friendship.

4. Esteem needs- Esteem needs are of two types: internal esteem needs (self- respect, confidence, competence, achievement and freedom) and external esteem needs (recognition, power, status, attention and admiration).

5. Self-actualization need- This include the urge to become what you are capable of becoming / what you have the potential to become. It includes the need for growth and self-contentment. It also includes desire for gaining more knowledge, social- service, creativity and being aesthetic. The self- actualization needs are never fully satiable.

Be very particular about the pronunciation of words. If you are not very sure of how to pronounce a particular word, avoid the same in your speech. Pronouncing words wrongly creates a bad impression on others. You really do not need to speak with a fake accent to prove that you have excellent communication skills. Avoid copying others. An individual should have his/her own style to stand apart from the rest. Speaking articulately enhances one's personality and makes him/her different from others.

Do not play with words. Never try to fool anyone as you might fall in the trap later on. One should always say things straight to the point.

It is important to be a good and patient listener for effective communication skills. Observe whether the other person is listening to you or not. Allow the other person to speak as well in case of queries or confusions.

Manish JainCEO

As an individual grows psychologically, opportunities keep cropping up to continue growing.

According to Maslow, individuals are motivated by unsatisfied needs. As each of these needs is significantly satisfied, it drives and forces the next need to emerge. Maslow grouped the five needs into two categories - Higher-order needs and Lower-order needs. The physiological and the safety needs constituted the lower-order needs. These lower-order needs are mainly satisfied externally. The social, esteem, and self-actualization needs constituted the higher-order needs. These higher-order needs are generally satisfied internally, i.e., within an individual. Thus, we can conclude that during

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory

boom period, the employees lower-order needs are significantly met.

Implications of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory for Managers

As far as the physiological needs are concerned, the managers should give employees appropriate salaries to purchase the basic necessities of life. Breaks and eating opportunities should be given to employees.

As far as the safety needs are concerned, the managers should provide the employees job security, safe and hygienic work environment, and retirement benefits so as to retain them.As far as social needs are concerned, the management should encourage teamwork and organize social events.

As far as esteem needs are concerned, the managers can appreciate and reward employees on accomplishing and exceeding their targets. The management can give the deserved employee higher job rank / position in the organization.

As far as self-actualization needs are concerned, the managers can give the employees challenging jobs in which the employees' skills and competencies are fully utilized. Moreover, growth opportunities can be given to them so that they can reach the peak.

The managers must identify the need level at which the employee is existing and then those needs can be utilized as push for motivation.

Limitations of Maslow's Theory

It is essential to note that not all employees are governed by same set of needs. Different individuals may be driven by different needs at same point of time. It is always the most powerful unsatisfied need that motivates an individual.

The theory is not empirically supported.

The theory is not applicable in case of starving artist as even if the artist's basic needs are not satisfied, he will still strive for recognition and achievement.
