The Better Water Maker was developed to disinfect water in

nations with high mortality rates due to poor water and sanitation systems. The goal of our team is

to provide a low cost, efficient power generation system for the Better Water Maker that does not

tire the user while it is fun and easy to use.

• Increase ease of use • Reduce cost to target of

$75• Produce power

consistently• Designed for Women

and children

Fig. 1: Previous Design

• Mimicked a recumbent seating design

• Adjustable gearbox track, that is designed to satisfy heights of women and children

• Low cost materials

• Three LED user interface

• Regulator circuit to protect the bulb in the sanitation system

• Increase gear ratio from 1:24 to 1:28

• Change design to accommodate foot pedal

• Reduce motors from 4 to 3 to reduce torque

• Increase RPM

• Use motors with same outside envelope, with same power specs, but reduced RPMs

• To reduce cost, analyze different materials for several components

• Not optimal design but…

• Testing proved that…
