She has contemplated, over the years since her daughter’s passing, ways that this might be accomplished. Last year, after reading an issue of Profiles of Giving, Merle was inspired to contact former AMH Board Chair Lorraine Pruitt, whom she knew through the Lower Moreland schools and community. She told Lorraine of her desire to do something at Abington Memorial Hospital, where Corinne had been on staff for 10 years. Lorraine put Merle in touch with AMH Fund Development staff, who “got the ball rolling” and introduced Merle to Steven A. Shapiro, D.O., chair of the hospital’s Pediatrics Department. Dr. Shapiro suggested the need to help families of newborns who have no health insurance to cover their babies from birth through three months old. The need is particularly great at Abington Memorial Hospital, which has the largest number of births of any hospital in the area. Thus was born the Corinne Santerian Newborn Center. Corinne Santerian, D.O., was a board-certified pediatrician who devoted her life to the care and well-being of young patients. Born at Abington I am very pleased to share the news that Abington Memorial Hospital has reached a new milestone with our recent decision to welcome Central Montgomery Medical Center (CMMC) into our network of service providers. We completed our purchase of CMMC, which we renamed Lansdale Hospital, on October 31 of this year. It should be a wonderful partnership. For years, CMMC has worked hard to provide excellent medical services to its community. And for years,Abington Memorial Hospital has served the North Penn region through our Abington Physicians at Montgomeryville and our many community outreach, health education and health screening programs. We know the community well, and this new agreement will strengthen Lansdale Hospital’s ability to continue serving its community with outstanding healthcare close to home. We will continue Lansdale Hospital’s role as an inpatient acute care hospital with an emergency department, plus outpatient surgery and diagnostic services. We plan to expand and strengthen the hospital’s emergency care, drawing on Abington Memorial Hospital’s 20-year history of excellence as the only designated Level II trauma center in Montgomery County. We also look forward to working with Lansdale Hospital’s medical staff and employees to determine additional opportunities for growing and enhancing both inpatient and outpatient services. This is an exciting time for Abington Memorial Hospital. Not only do we continue to grow in size, we also continue to grow in stature and in recognition for our excellence. As just one example, Abington Memorial Hospital was recently honored with the Magnet Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in nursing. Bestowed upon only one credentialed Magnet hospital each year by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the award honors exemplary innovations in nursing care. The Magnet Prize was presented to Abington Memorial Hospital, one of only five hospitals nationwide to be so honored, in recognition of our Daily CARE Plan for keeping patients and their families informed about the details of their care. This prize is an exceptional recognition for our nursing program, and it’s an inspiring example of the commitment to excellence we maintain throughout the hospital. Memorial Hospital herself, Dr. Santerianreturned as an adult to serve as a member ofthe hospital’s medical staff. She was agraduate of the Philadelphia College ofOsteopathic Medicine and pursued herpediatric residency at GeorgetownUniversity Medical School.

At the completion of her residency,William J. Sohn, M.D., who had been herpediatrician when she was a child, invitedCorinne to return to the Philadelphia area

and join his practice as soon as she graduated. So, upon returninghome, Corinne began her medical career in the practice of Dr. Sohnand Joseph J. Cirotti, M.D. Corinne worked with them for severalyears, and then joined her husband, Dr.WilliamMoore, whom shemarried in1991, at Buckingham Pediatrics, where she worked untilher passing. She and her husband had three children, of whom twohave expressed interest in following in her medical footsteps.

The Corinne Santerian Newborn Center will honor Corinne’slegacy by providing well-baby care for newborns, up to the age ofthree months, who are delivered at the hospital’s OB/GYN Center. The OB/GYN Center provides low- or no-cost gynecological andobstetrical services to some 1,400 new patients each year, 65 percentof whom have no health insurance. Approximately 20 percent ofthe 4,800 babies born at Abington Memorial Hospital last year weredelivered at the OB/GYN Center.

“Ned would be very happy making this gift for Corinne,” Merlesays of her late husband, who passed away in 1994. “This is in hishonor as well as Corinne’s.”

Merle says her philanthropy is inspired by her faith.“What we have is given to us by God.We are his stewards.

After taking care of our family and needs, we should give back –be it in time, talent or money – to help others. I try to live my life thatway, and believe that the more we give, the more we receive.”

Merle says she hopes the new Corinne Santerian NewbornCenter will be an inspiration for others to step forward and lend theirsupport to the worthwhile programs atAbington Memorial Hospital.

What is palliative care, and what is itsrelationship to hospice care?To palliate means to comfort, so palliativecare involves providing comfort andsymptom management to patients atAbington Memorial Hospital. The hospital’sPalliative Care Service offers patients, families and physicians additional supportto make sure that a patient’s symptommanagement and comfort level are at theirbest. With hospice care, patients have electedto recognize the end stage of their life with afocus on comfort measures only. Palliativecare can be a part of hospice care, butpalliative care can also provide services atany point in a disease process. Patients whohave chronic pain or chronic heart diseasemay not be near that final six-month windowthat hospice care generally addresses, butthey may benefit from palliative care.

What does Abington MemorialHospital’s palliative care involve? Our Palliative Care Service was startedsix years ago based on the recognitionthat patients, and their families, who arefacing a progressive or chronic illness,or who are at a time in their lives whencertain decisions need to be made, mayneed help in considering what theiroptions for care may be.We don’t takeover the care of a patient, but weprovide a consulting service for thephysician that draws from a team ofcaregivers – physicians, nurses, social worker, pharmacist, chaplain,

nurse practitioner and others – whowork together to help families considercare options.

The Palliative Care team provideseducation for various groups in the hospital –including nurses and residents – thataddresses issues such as understanding therole of palliative care, symptom managementinterventions and understanding theimportance of delivering bad news to patients

and families. The team’s support extendsbeyond the patient and family, andrecognizes the needs of staff in caring forpatients and families.

What kind of counseling do you provide?Palliative care is a very personal experiencefor everyone involved. These discussionsmay bring up issues about previous losses orthe need to address financial challenges ofmanaging care for an elderly parent when thepatient can’t return home. The discussionmay deal with decision-making whenfamilies are in conflict about their readinessto change the goal of care and requiresupport and further education. Our role maybe to bring together a family that needsemotional and spiritual support. We givefamilies an opportunity to sit together withus, or participate on a conference call ifthey’re scattered around the country. We givethem the time they need to share feelings, get answers to questions and be comfortableknowing that their needs are being metduring a very stressful situation.

What are the typical steps inpalliative care?Every situation is unique, but typically, apatient’s attending physician would ask toconsult with us to help establish the patient’sgoals of care.We do a full assessment of thepatient that includes medications, treatments, etc., to make sure they match the patient’sneeds and goals. Then we meet with thefamily as soon as possible to identify ourrole, to review where the patient is in his orher illness, to review what measures arebeing taken to look at the options of care andwhat those decisions would mean for thepatient and family and to discuss hospicecare if requested. This meeting can be quitechallenging for a family, so we providewhatever resources may be needed, includingmembers of the team, the other treatingphysicians or services and languageinterpreters if needed.

What happens next?Once the family can gather, we can lookat the different paths of care. Families areunder a lot of stress, so we convey to themthat no decision is wrong or must be madeimmediately. But in some situations, where a decision actually is imminent, such as whether or not to elect to have asurgical procedure, we will work with thefamily to come to a decision.

If the end of life comes while a patientis still in the hospital, we offer bereavementsupport to the family. This can includesupport groups and special services forchildren at our Safe Harbor program. ThePalliative Care Service’s goal is to providesupport to patients, families and staff duringtimes of serious illness to facilitate optimalcomfort and understanding when makingimportant medical decisions.

Honor & Memorial Gifts$25 OR MORE FROM APRIL 1, 2008 – SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

Abington Memorial Hospital’s tradition of recognizing honor and memorial gifts goes all the wayback to our founding in 1912. GeorgeW. Elkins gave the land for our original building and donatedcharitable funds in his wife’s memory. Thus, what was originally planned to be Abington General Hospitalbecame Abington Memorial Hospital to honor the memory of Stella McIntyre Elkins, the late wife ofGeorge Elkins. Every year we receive numerous gifts that remember loved ones, honor friends and familymembers, mark special occasions and express personal appreciation. The listing below recognizes donorswho recently made honor or memorial gifts to the hospital. Each donor is thanked for his or herthoughtfulness, and each honoree is informed of the special tribute.

A s part of the $700 billion rescue plan recently passed byCongress and signed by the President, certain portionsof the expired Pension ProtectionAct of 2006 were

extended. From a gift-planning perspective, the centerpiece of thenew legislation involves the so-called IRA Charitable Rollover.

The new law provides that, in each of the years 2008 and2009, an owner of a traditional or Roth IRA may instruct thetrustee to distribute directly to a public charity up to $100,000without the distribution being included in taxable income, andthe distribution will count toward the IRA owner's mandatorywithdrawal amount.

To qualify, the donor must direct the IRA manager to transferfunds directly to a charity. The donor must be at least age 70½ and

the donee must be a tax-exempt organization to which deductiblecontributions can be made, such asAbington Memorial HospitalFoundation. Donor-advised funds and supporting organizationsare not eligible. Rollovers to a planned gift, such as a gift annuityor a charitable remainder trust, do not qualify, nor do outrightdistributions to a charity from employer-sponsored retirementplans, such as Simple IRAs, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s.Other restrictions may also apply.

For more information and to see if you qualityfor this opportunity to make a tax-advantagedcontribution toAbington Memorial Hospital, pleasecontact Amanda Rice, planned giving officer,at 215-481-4019 or [email protected].

T h e C h a r i t a b l e A d v a n t a g e The Rewards of Planned Gifts

I n this time of volatile markets, a charitable gift annuity tobenefit Abington Memorial Hospital can provide you with asteady, fixed income stream for life – guaranteed. This simple contract transfers cash, stock or other assets to

Abington Memorial Hospital Foundation, which then pays youa fixed income for life.Your payments come four times a year, and in most cases they are partially tax free. In addition to yourincome payments, you get a charitable tax deduction for your

gift plus membership in the hospital’s Elkins Legacy Society.Best of all, you get the satisfaction of knowing that your gift issupporting excellent healthcare in your community.

For more information, please contact Amanda Rice, planned giving officer, at 215-481-4019 or [email protected].

Charitable gift annuities are a solid option

A charitable gift annuity is a great way to lock in

the value of appreciated stock and convert it into

a steady, fixed and guaranteed life-income

stream. When you transfer cash, stock or other

appreciated assets to establish a charitable gift

annuity, you enter a simple contract in which

Abington Memorial Hospital Foundation (AMHF)

agrees to pay a fixed income for life.

The income is typically paid four times a year;

in most cases, it is partially tax-free; and, when

gifting appreciated assets, it can minimize your

capital gain and spread any recognized gain

over a period of years. The stock must be gifted

directly to AMHF. The fund development staff

can provide instructions on how to do so.

The ups and downs of the stock market are

cause to review your stock portfolio.

If you are reallocating your investments, consider

gifting stock directly to AMHF. You’ll enjoy the

income and, more importantly, the satisfaction of

knowing you’ve provided future support of

excellent healthcare in your community.

Charitable gift annuities offer a win-win

opportunity. They provide: fixed income for life charitable tax deduction potential capital gains tax savings the opportunity to lock in the value

of appreciated assets membership in The Elkins Legacy Society satisfaction knowing your gift is supporting

excellent healthcare in your community.

LEAVE A LEGACY®

Create your own legacy.A bequest, large or small, is a meaningful way to provide

future support to Abington Memorial Hospital.

On October 14, Abington Memorial Hospital dedicated its new Hank Haines Memorial Garden.Located in front of theWidener Building along HoraceAvenue, the garden features an array ofplantings and landscaping that includes a memorial water element and commemorative benches.

It was designed byAndy Sykes, landscape designer with Garrett Churchill, Inc., and made possible withsupport from Hank’s wife, Barbara, and many of Hank’s friends and family.

The garden is a fitting tribute to an avid gardener who also devoted his life to growing and nurturingAbington Memorial Hospital. Hank’s formal involvement with the hospital encompassed more than half a

century, beginning in 1956 when he was named a Trustee. Hispersonal involvement reached back even further to when he wasjust 10 years old and attended his first June Fete Village Fair –the start of an unbroken record of attending every June Fete for thenext eight decades.

In 1962, Hank stepped down as a Trustee to become Directorof the hospital’s new Office of Development and Public Relations. Heserved as Director of Development for 24 years, and for another twodecades he served as a consultant to the office. Over the course of hisservice, Hank was presented with every one of the hospital’s highestawards, including the LoyaltyAward – which is now named for him.
