INTRODUCTION

Faculty of Science of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice was founded in 1963 and since

that time it has educated more than 4 700 graduates of both, single and joint degree

programme studies in all branches of natural sciences. Within the European Union adopted

model 3-5-8, the Faculty provides the Bachelor's and Magister's degree studies in the

following branches: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Ecology, Informatics, Mathematics

and Physics as well as all joint degree programmes in combinations of Biology, Chemistry,

Geography, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics. As a respected research institution, the

Faculty offers also PhD study programmes in thirteen accredited fields of science for

graduates from Slovak and foreign universities. The education at the Faculty of Science is

provided by experienced teachers who carry out also research and closely co-operate with

Slovak and foreign universities and research facilities.

The research at the Faculty of Science at Šafárik University in Košice shows

multidisciplinary character and due to this it covers a wide range of topics from molecular

biology to computer and material sciences. The research in 2004 in the field of Biology and

Ecology was directed towards the problems of biodiversity of plants and animals,

biotechnology of medicinal plants, carcinogenesis, prevention and cancer therapy; in

Geography the research was aimed at hydrology of the Slovak karst. Research in Chemistry

focused on synthesis and properties of new compounds with biological activity, new materials

and new analytical methods. Research in Informatics was concentrated on fuzzy techniques,

neural networks, logical programming and preparation of web-university, in Mathematics it

followed the ideas of graph theory, algebraic structures, differential equations and topology

and in Physics it was concentrated on development of new magnetic materials, theoretical and

experimental research of low-dimensional magnetism and quantum liquids at ultra-low

temperatures, nuclear collision studies and photodynamic effect. The research at the Institute

of Social Sciences dealt with problems of health, quality of life and integration of health

disadvantaged peoples. The research was also carried out in the fields of theory of teaching of

biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. High percentage of the scientific outputs is

done in the co-operation with foreign universities or research facilities.

Graduates of the Faculty find positions not only as researchers and secondary school

teachers but they can successfully work in the business sphere and public administration.

Some of them successfully undertake doctoral study or postdoctoral training abroad to be well

accepted in the European labour market. New forms of further long-life education as a part of

service done to society are provided for graduates of the Faculty of Science as well as for the

public. The RNDr. (Rerum Naturalium Doctor) examinations, qualification examinations,

various courses and training projects are to be mentioned. In accordance with European

documents on higher education the Faculty with the help of TEMPUS projects fundamentally

reformed its educational system by the implementation of the credit-based system in line with

the European standard ECTS in the past years. Joining the European SOCRATES/ERASMUS

programme promoted the possibility for students to undertake a fully recognized period of

study at EU universities as an integral part of their degree and academic qualification.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Faculty of Science of P. J. Šafárik University in Košice is included in the group of

research faculties, which put strong accent on research as an integral part of their mission.

Multidisciplinary character of the Faculty is a good prerequisite for interdisciplinary approach

and integration of scientific activities. After entering into European structures the priorities of

the Faculty are integration into European research area, improving the quality of scientific

outputs and PhD study, increasing the stream of financial sources for scientific activities, re-

building of research and information infrastructure of the Faculty and extension of services in

community, business, research, developmental, industrial and agricultural facilities in

Slovakia.

In 2004, the Faculty has continued to improve the quality of several excellent research

laboratories: Laboratory of NMR spectroscopy, Laboratory of spectral methods and

Laboratory of structure analysis of biomacromolecules (Institute of Chemistry), Laboratory of

flow cytometry and Laboratory of cell cultures (Institute of Biology), Laboratory of low

temperature physics, Laboratory of biophotonics and Laboratory of advanced computer

technologies (Institute of Physics) as well as the Laboratory of GIS (Institute of Geography).

In these and other laboratories worked more than 190 university teachers and

researchers together with about 120 doctoral students. This staff is involved in up to 115

scientific projects supported by both, grants for fundamental research from the Slovak grant

agencies: Slovak Grant Agency for Science (VEGA), Slovak Agency for Science and

Technology (APVT), Slovak Cultural and Educational Agency (KEGA), and foreign sources

of funding such as NATO Research Foundation, DAAD (Germany), National Science

Foundation (U.S.A.) and other institutions. Moreover, young researchers were supported by

internal grant systems (VVGS) at the university as well as faculty level. In 2004, the

University and Faculty supported 10 and 19 VVGS projects, respectively.

Excellence in research measured by international standards is a first objective of our

research teams. In applied research, the main attention is paid to pharmaceutical,

pharmacological, chemical and material research. Continuous increase in funding sources for

research is caused by the growing activity and comes from research grants and contracts. It

exceeds the average grant income of the Slovak universities, year after year it becomes more

Selected Results

We found, that the application of the pineal hormone melatonin during a period of 6 months

to male and female Sprague-Dowley rats (with a start of application at 5 weeks of age)

markedly influenced the saccharide metabolism in both sexes. The changes in lipid

metabolism were less substantial. The chronicaly application of melatonine influenced the

increase in body weight without changes in food and water intake. (Marková et al., Acta Vet.,

Brno, 73, 445, 2004; VEGA 1/0442/03)

The mechanism of stress induced analgesia in rats was investigated after a single whole-body

dose of 6 Gy of gamma-rays or a dose of 10 Gy applied on the head. It was established, that

the application of a blockator of -opioid receptors naloxone in a dose of 8 mg/kg b.w. 30

minutes after irradiation reversed the analgetic effect of radiation. The results suggest the

probable role of central opioidergic mechanisms in postirradaition analgesia. (Kereškényiová

and Šmajda, Acta Vet. Brno, 73, 195, 2004; VEGA 1/0440/03)

Selected Results

New low-dimensional magnetics based on combination of paramagnetic central atoms Cu(II)

and Ni(II), respectively, coordinated by bi- and polydentate N-donor bidentate ligands and

bridged by diamagnetic cyanocomplexes of Pd(II), Fe(II) and Ag(I) or pseudohalogenide

anions were prepared, characterized and their crystal structure was elucidated. The

phenomenon of hydrate isomer was observed in the case of [Cu(en)2(H2O)x]2Fe(CN)6.4H2O.

For the suitable compounds the shape of coordination polyhedron and processes of charge

transfer were studied. (Triščíková et al., Inorg. Chim. Acta, 357, 2763, 2004; Kuchár et al.,

Acta Crystallogr. C, 60, 418, 2004; VEGA 1/0477/03).

New zinc carboxylate complex compounds with bioactive ligands were prepared and their

physicochemical, thermal and biological properties were studied. A new synthetic methods

for zin(II) complexes was developed. Correlation of structural, thermal and spectroscopic

properties of prepared complexes with their biological activity was explained (Vargová, Z. et

al., Thermochim. Acta, 423, 149, 2004; VEGA 1/9247/02).

New orientations in acridine chemistry have been elaborated: preparation of trisubstituted

thiosemicarbazides, new acridinyl thionodioxo- and trioxoimidazolidines, reactions of

thioureas with acetylenes derivatives and 1,3-cycloadditions of acridine dienophiles with

nitriloxides and vice-versa (Klika, K. et al., Rapid Commun. Mass Sp., 18, 87, 2004; VEGA

1/9245/02).

New interfaces to couple chromatography with TOF SIMS and Raman spectroscopy were

developed. Optimal evaluation criteria were established for these interfaces. Intensity of TOF

SIMS background signal was monitoring taking into account trace and ultratrace analysis

possibility. ToF SIMS coupling interfaces were tested with model analytes: methylene red,

abietic acid, gibberellic acid and terpinole. First one of them played special role as analyte

interfacial transfer marker. Conditions for HPLC and uHPLC analysis followed with analytes

of both denaturing and chaotropic salts have been performed. The thermal denaturation of

Glucose oxidase (GOX) has been analyzed in detail. Based on obtained results, the

denaturation scheme of GOX and an explanation of inconsistencies in parameters reported in

literature for this protein. For the first time we have shown the presence of residual structure

in thermally denatured state of mesophilic protein. (Žoldák, G. et al., Eur. J. Biochem., 271,

Selected Results

A new task of learning from monotonely classified data was formulated. An algorithm was

designed and experimentally checked with positive results. Results of Maria Sessa from TCS

were extended: a procedural and declarative semantics for similarities with arbitrary t-norm.

Generalized annotated programs can be partially interpreted by Bayesian logic programs.

Fuzzy and annotated logic programs are practically equivalent (up to some constraints

neglectible in practical applications). (VEGA 1/0385/03)

In research partially covered by the COST 274 programme was devoted to problems of

Inductive Logic Programming. We extended our method of learning from monotonely

Hydrological and hydrogeographical research were carried out and published as partial

results. An extensive land cover mapping was carried out. New members of the project solved

human –geographic aspect of transformation of natural landscape at the level of methodology,

conceptual model and database creation and its application in the GIS environment. At the

same time mapping of some selected activities took place such as tourism, population

potential and a map of land use. (Hochmuth: In: Proc. Conf. “Výskum, využívanie a ochrana

A time and spatial modelling of the agri-rural structures in the environment of geoinformation

technologies, the preparation of the model area with specific conditions for the agri-rural

structure (high-productive agriculture, cities´ hinterlands, border areas, existing and arising

micro-regions, in special environment, case study Podunajská Lowland, Chvojnická Hilly

Land, Biele Karpaty, regions of Malacky, Senec a Šamorín, Ondavská Uplands). The

determination of strong and weak agri-rural regions in Slovakia by means of new

methodological approaches, mainly selected (geo)statistical methods and techniques in the

environment of geoinformation technologies. A mutual relationship between agri-structures

and a rural space. Finalization of a preparation and a collection of soft databases in selected

agri-rural areas, in order to validate the hypothesis on a possible orientation of these areas.

Selected Results

The obtained results give sufficient conditions for oscillatory properties of solutions of two-

dimensional neutral differential systems with the neutrality in the both components

(Mihalíková, Stud. Univ. Žilina Math. Phys. Ser. 18 (2004) 27-36; VEGA 1/0426/03).

New types of preferences of players in coalition formation games have been introduced

and complete characterization of computational complexity of their existence and testing

problems have been provided. In polynomial cases efficient algorithms have been proposed

(Cechlárová et al., Discrete Applied Math. 138/3 (2004), 333-347; Cechlárová et al., Discrete

Applied Math. 140/1-3 (2004) 1-17; Cechlárová et al., Int. J. Inform. Technol. Decision

Making 3 (2004) 605-614; VEGA 1/0425/03).

There have been characterised all plane generalised Petersen graphs and all plane hexagonal

grids admitting an antimagic labelling. A knowledge on sets of light generalised stars, that can

appear as subgraphs in polyhedral maps on 2-dimensional manifolds, has been obtained. It

has been proved that the achromatic index of the complete graph is for any prime

at least . The structure of plane graphs of minimum face size 5 has

been described (Bača et al., Ars Combin. 73 (2004) 115-128; Bača et al., Utilitas Math. 66

(2004) 231-238; Jendroľ et al., Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 24 (2004) 85-107; Horňák et al.,

Graphs Combin. 20 (2004) 191-203; Madaras, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 24 (2004), 403-

411; VEGA 1/0424/03).

Page 61: P Web view · 2005-05-18„Quantum aspects of exactly solvable low-dimensional ... Water Research Institute ... and the zeolitic fertilizers with regard to a sorption of heavy metals

A class of partially ordered sets, in which a cancellation rule is valid, has been found. A

generating set for the clone of local polynomials on Stone and Kleene algebras has been found

(Jakubík et al., Math. Slovaca 54 (2004) 215-223; Kuchmei et al., Algebra Universalis 51

(2004) 419-434; VEGA 1/0423/03).

Selected Results

We have determined compensation temperature Tk and magnetic susceptibility of the Prussian

blue analog [NipMn1-p]1.5[Cr(CN)6].zH2O. We have found that the susceptibility may exhibit

the finite value at transition temperature Tc for the system corresponding to the case Tc = Tk in

excellent agreement with experiment. (Bobák et al., Czech. J. Phys. 54 (2004) 523; VEGA

1/9034/02).

Magnetic properties of a mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model with uniaxial and biaxial

crystal-field anisotropies have been exactly investigated within the framework of generalized

star-triangle mapping transformation for the case of honeycomb lattice. The dynamical time-

dependent correlation and autocorrelation functions have been calculated and analyzed in

detail and the results clearly indicate the spin tunneling between <+1| and <-1| states in the

magnetically ordered phase with the non-zero critical temperature. (Strečka et al., Phys. Rev.

B 70 (2004) 144041, APVT 20-009902).

Experimental study of specific heat of S=1 Heisenberg ferromagnetic chain CsNiF3 in

magnetic field oriented paralell to the quantization axis revealed the existence of nonlinear

spin modes (Orendáč et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 184403, 2004, MVTS NSF-INT-9722935).

Study of thermodynamic quantities and ESR spectra of Cu(en)2(H2O)2SO4 enabled

identification of the studied material as 2d Heisenberg antiferomagnet on triangular lattice

with pronounced spatial anisotropy of exchange interaction mediated predominantly by

square planar network of hydrogen bonds (APVT-007/2001).

Study of thermodynamic properties of the compound [CuII(en)2(H2O)]

[CuII(en)2Ni2CuI2(CN)10].2H2O confirmed the assumption about dominant role of hydrogen

bonds in mediating exchange paths. Numerical analysis of the experimental data revealed

creation of spin clusters in the form of frustrated tetramers (APVT 20-009902).

Study of alternating susceptibility and specific heat of selected pure and magnetically diluted

rare – earth pyrochlores representing so – called spin ice confirmed that magnetic dilution

decreases spin – lattice relaxation time similarly as dilution of water ice enhances proton

The project was partially oriented on cobalt oxides doped with Na, the hydrated forms of

which are superconducting. Experimental study, including EPR and NMR techniques,

magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements, have shown that a

mesoscopic phase separation occurs in the system below 250 K, resulting in a coexistence of

antiferromagnetic domains and a metallic nonmagnetic matrix. (Carretta et al., Phys. Rev. B

70, 024409 (2004), APVT –51-020102).

Investigating the magnetic properties of Fe, Co and Ni based compacted powder (prepared by

milling of rapidly quenched ribbons) in the shape of small ring we obtained that consolidation

of powder with high value of coercivity (caused by dominant fraction of magnetization vector

rotation in the magnetization process) leads to the “magnetic contact” between powder

particles resulting in the decrease of coercivity to the value comparable with that for as-spun

ribbons. (Kollár et al., Czech. J. Phys. 54 (2004) 67; VEGA 1/1021/04).

The high-momentum structure of the 3He, 3H and deuteron in the experiment with polarized

deuteron beam performed at Ed = 270 MeV at RIKEN , Japan was investigated. For this

purpose the angular dependence of the tensor and vector analyzing powers were measured for

the reaction d + d 3H + p and d + d 3He + n . The results of the tensor Ayy and vector Ay

analyzing powers were obtained in the full angular range. The energy dependence of the

tensor analyzing power T20 at a zero degree is also shown. First results on the Ay and Ayy in

the d+d p+X reaction near threshold are obtained. (Janek et al., Acta Phys. Slov. 54 (2004)

367; VEGA 1/1020/04).

New spectroscopic observational material was obtained for symbiotic system AG Dra on

Asiágo (Italy) and Tartu (Estonia) observatories. The analysis of this data approved our

previous model, which observed secondary variations of radial velocities described as

pulsation of cool component of this system. Independent methods of analysis applied on the

same data confirmed correctness of our method of consecutive iterations. AG Dra is in active

phase since 1994. Possible main outburst in 2005 can certify resonance character of activity of

this symbiotic system, which we suggest in previous work. (Gális et al., Baltic Astron., 13,

132 (2004); VEGA 2/4014/24)

Study of influence of rare-earth (RE) elements in FeCuRESiB alloys showed their significant

influence on crystallization process for samples in form of ribbon, but not for thin films.

Study of magnetostriction of (Fe1-xCox)73,5Cu1Nb3Si13,5B9 alloys showed near-zero

magnetostriction for samples 0,9<x<1. Thecomparison properties of Fe88-xZr7YxB5 thin films

and ribbons showed different influence of selected substitutions on magnetic properties of

thin films and ribbons. (Sovák et al., Czech. J. Phys. 54 (2004) D261, VEGA 1/1019/04).

The dependence of the effect of the strangeness production enhancement on the centrality and

energy of the Pb-Pb collision was studied. The transverse mass spectra from Pb-Pb collisions

were analyzed in the framework of the blast wave model. A global fit leads to determination

of the temperature and the transverse expansion velocity at thermal freeze-out. The tranverse

expansion velocity was found to be similar at 40 and 158 AGeV/c, but the freeze-out

temperature was found to be smaller at 40 AGeV/c. A control and readout electronics for the

ALICE silicon pixel detector was designed and built. Intensive tests on the beam showed its

reliability in experimental conditions (Kravčáková et al., Nuclear Phys. A 734 (2004) 57;

VEGA 2/2102/02).

The experimental evidence and characterization of two new types of MRs (B and Si) in Co-

based amorphous alloys are rendered. Decrease of the pre-exponential factor τ0 with the

increased Cr-contents proofs a link between τ0 and the entropy of the CoCrSiB alloys. We

have worked out a new method for the study of the single domain wall potential. We have

found out that the domain wall potential in the amorphous microwires consists of two main

contributions: magnetoelastic and relaxation ones. We have introduced a new contribution to

the domain wall damping in the microwires based on the structural relaxation. (Vojtaník et al.,

Phys. Rev. B 70, 052407 (2004); Varga et al., Phys. Rev. B 70, 024402 (2004); VEGA

1/1017/04).

The multifragmentation has been measured and the clustering of light relativistic stable and

radioactive nuclei was studied in the energy range of few GeV per nucleon in frame of the

experiment Becquerel in VBLHE JINR in Dubna. The nonstatistical fluctuations of

relativistic s-particles (with 0.7) have been investigated in central interactions of 16O, 28Si, 197Au and 208Pb with Ag(Br) nuclei in photoemulsion at energies from 4 up to 200 GeV per

nucleon. In central nuclear interactions of 208Pb and of 197Au, the events with the ring-like

Page 74: P Web view · 2005-05-18„Quantum aspects of exactly solvable low-dimensional ... Water Research Institute ... and the zeolitic fertilizers with regard to a sorption of heavy metals

nonstatistical structures have been observed. The correlations in production of the secondary

charged particles in interactions of 16O in photoemulsion and also the flow effects of nuclear

matter in interactions of relativistic nuclei in photoemulsion have been investigated.

(Vrláková et al., Phys. Atom. Nucl. 67 (2004) 290; VEGA 1/9036/02).

Nonstatistical fluctuations and correlations in the production of particles produced in Au+Au,

p+p and d+Au collisions at the energies sNN = 200 GeV or 130 GeV were studied. The

experimental data were obtained in STAR experiment operating at RHIC ollider at

Brookhaven National Laboratory in USA. In addition, the experimental data from 197Au and 208Pb collisions with 108Ag(80Br) target nuclei measured respectively at the AGS and SPS

energies were analyzed. The summarized results along with other possible QGP signatures

point out at the creation of unique and yet unobserved medium with extreme density,

collectivity and dissipation, especially in the most central interactions. Those properties result

in the suppression and dissolution of primary correlations such as jets and minijets. Although

the mentioned effects were not observed before, the consensus in opinions that the detected

medium can be unambiguously interpreted as QGP has not been achieved yet. Therefore it is

planned to gather more experimental evidence in the future (Fedorišin et al., Phys. Rew. C 93

(2004) 1; APVT 51-010002).

The transverse Heisenberg model is investigated by the Green function method (GF). We

have obtained continuous reorientation transition. (Ilkovič et al., Acta Phys. Slov. 54 (2004)

465). The critical surface coupling calculated within the spin-wave theory has a finite value -

the surface can be ordered over a paramagnetic bulk. (Ilkovič et al., Czech. J. Phys. 54 (2004)

D237; VEGA 1/9035/02).

The detail coverage of the light curves of symbiotic system YY Her and cataclysmic variable

V471 Tau. with high ratio signal to noise was obtained. These observations covered almost

whole light curve with period of 587 days. We also studied energetic and time scales of active

processes and main outburst of YY her as well as flickering activity of recurrent nova T CrB.

Obtained results were confronted with recent theoretical models. (Vaňko et al., Baltic

Selected Results

Creation of picture and sound archive for encyclopaedia for blind and partially sighted

continued, as well as development and verification of new typholographic technologies. The

concept of mentioned encyclopaedia were developed (KEGA 3/0139/02).

Multidisciplinary Košice Institute for Society and Health supporting research and educational

activities and joining efforts in field of health promotion, quality of life, societal integration of

health and social disadvantaged was establishment (APVT 20-028802)

The research of socio-economic inequalities in health was focused on statistical analyses of

cross-sectional and longitudinal data collected in past years. Following topics were explored:

the health of young people with regard to age, gender and education, the influence of parental

long-term unemployment on health and subjective well being of adolescents, changes in

health and risk behaviour in adolescence and young adulthood, socio-economic disadvantaged

as a factor of health, and impact of parents, peers and SES on risky behaviour of adolescence.

Particular attention were focused on the role of grand parents as a source of social support

among adolescents (Madarasová Gecková: Soc. Prev. Med. 49 (2004) 26; APVT-20-00-

3602).

In frame of project “Healthy ageing” the health status of elderly living in Poland and Croatia

were compared, and the dimension of health among elderly were explored (Knurowski: Croat.

Med. J. 6, 750-756, 2004; Knurowski: Stud. Psychol. 1, 21-30, 2004).

In research of social intelligence a review of literature related to social intelligence and social

competence were published. Data collection in sample of teachers coming from various

regions in Slovakia were performed, first part of University student’s social intelligence

training program was realised and related data collection were performed with aim to explore

efficiency of this program (Orosová: Cs. Psychol. 4 (2004) 306; VEGA 2/4171/24).

In frame of project focused on risk behaviour among university students the review of

literature related to use of sociometric techniques in school practise were published, the first

wave of data collection in sample of university students were performed, the first part of Drug

and AIDS prevention program was realised and the first part of data collection with aim to

explore efficiency of realised program were performed (A. Madarasová Gecková Cs. Psychol.

2004, 3, 263-277; O. Orosová, VEGA 1/1408/04).

The attention in field of chronic disease was focused on the identification of determinants of

self-rated health, which is one of the most important predictors of morbidity, utilisation of

health care services or health protective behaviour. The relationship between pain and

psychological well-being in patients with rheumatoid arthritis were explored. The factors

modifying stress from adverse effects of immunosuppression were explored (Rosenberger:

Clinical Transplantation 19, 70-76, 2004; I. Rajničová, J. Rosenberger, co-operation with

University of Groningen and Faculty Hospital in Košice)

Research activities in frame of grant projects were focused mainly on issues related to the

essence and position of mathematical natural science in structure of theoretical knowledge of

up to date. The character and the essence of natural science since 17th century, as well as the

problem of axiological dimension of its knowledge were explored (Tholt: Filozofia, 59 (2004)

416; Tholt et al.,: Filozofia a život – život filozofie, Iris Bratislava, 2004; VEGA 1/9238/02,

VEGA 1/0451/03).
