Dear Parents and Community Members….
Intensive Swimming
A very big thank you to Miss Eakin for organising
the Intensive Swimming Scheme!!
Thank you to both Miss Eakin and Mr Manser for
braving the cold weather and jumping in the pool to teach
swimming lessons. By doing this they have provided our
students with a very valuable, life saving skill!
Year Six Farewell
The Year Six Farewell is being held this
Thursday, November 5th, starting from 6:00pm at
Kraze Maze. We are looking forward to sharing this
memorable moment with the Year Six students and
their families.
PB Assembly
The final PB assembly for 2013 will be held this
Friday, November 6th, at 10:15am in the Bruxner Hall.
Planning for 2014
We are currently looking at enrolments for next
year and possible class structures. If there are going to
be any changes to your child/children’s enrolments please
contact the school as soon as possible.
If you are going to enrol a child or know someone
who is, please contact the school as soon as possible.
Presentation Day
Presentation Day is being held on Thursday,
December 12that 10am in the Bruxner Hall. If your
child is being presented with an award on the day, you will
receive a letter in the mail. Please be aware that seating is
limited and will be allocated as we have done in previous
years.
Infants Club Raffle
The Infants Club are holding their annual end of
year raffle. Tickets are $1 each and the raffle will be
drawn on December 12th (after Presentation Day).
This is going to be a multiple prize draw so we are
asking for donations of suitable items to make up hampers.
We have already received a very generous donation
of an Angle Grinder.
This year the Infants Club have used their funds
to pay for one of the buses on the K-2 excursion to the
zoo and will provide buses for Rewards Day.
Landcare planting at Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public
School
On Wednesday, November 20th Mark Thomas
(from Granite Borders Landcare) visited our school and
planted some trees with Miss Coats, 3/4H, Mrs Cichon and
students. The trees have been planted underneath our big
tree near the infants building.
Two native species were planted to attract birds,
frogs and butterflies to the school. The girls thoroughly
enjoyed themselves and now have the responsible task of
ensuring the plants survive with regular watering and a little
TLC! Well done girls!

Health Message Safe Swimming Tips for ALL Ages
NEVER swim alone. ALWAYS swim with or be
supervised by a responsible adult. NEVER dive straight in to any waterway (pool,
dam, creek, river, beach). ALWAYS check the depth
first and what may be under the surface (eg. Floods
often bring logs, debris. Sand bars sometimes form
at beaches or there can be hidden rocks.) Walk in to
the water, use a stick to test the depth. When at the beach, swim between the red and
yellow flags. If someone needs assistance and you are not a
strong swimmer, send for or get help and/or use a
hose, a rope or a floatation device thrown to the
person to save them. NEVER panic. If you are struggling, tread
water, float on your back, raise one hand in the air
(don’t wave it about as people think you are waving at
them). DON’T swim against a rip, swim parallel. Have lessons. It is never too late to learn how
to swim, you never know when you may need this skill. Remember to be sun safe. Slip on a shirt, Slap
on a hat, Slop on some sun cream, Wrap on some
sunnies and seek shade between 10am and 2pm. Learn C.P.R. and first aid.
Intensive Swimming Scheme
Last week, students from Years 2-6
completed two weeks of intensive swimming. The
program concludes with students racing Miss Eakin
and Mr Manser with the students, once again,
beating the teachers, therefore earning an iceblock.
Congratulations to all the students for their
tremendous efforts, positive attitude and excellent
improvements.
Swimming is like any activity, you MUST continue to
practice to improve – parents/carers, please continue to give
your children the opportunity to continue to develop by
regularly taking them swimming.
Cricket Competition How to win a chance to go to the SCG for a 6er’s T20
Blast game this summer – open to all schools and clubs across
the region.
Register at www.sydneysixers.com.au/nextgen To
enter the competition kids must tell us in 25 words or less
why their school or club should win the chance to be on the
hallowed SCG Turf on national television! Good luck
everybody – as they say you have to be in it to win it.
Summer Reading Challenge Scholastic is holding a Summer Reading Challenge in
which children are being encouraged to read and log their
reading minutes. The reading minutes are recorded for our
school and our country as the Challenge is also between
Australia and New Zealand. The students just have to lodge
their summer reading minutes at www.scholastic.com.au/
summer to win some great prizes for themselves and the
school.
Reading for at least 10 minutes a day during the
school holidays sets your child up for a great start in the
new school year, keeps their mind active during the break
and develops overall reading skills and a love of reading.
