Polo at the Point 2015 marks the 27th year for the Eastern Shore’s premier
sporting event. Reaching well beyond the polo
fields, Polo at the Point generates much critical
funding for the University of South Alabama
Mitchell Cancer Institute, Thomas Hospital and
many other well deserving organizations.
Cancer death rates in Mobile and Baldwin
Counties are among some of the highest in
the nation. Early detection of cancer greatly
increases the chances for successful treatment
and overall survival. Pancreatic and ovarian
cancers have a high mortality rate as early
detection is difficult due to the lack of sensitive
screening methods and an
absence of recognizable
physical symptoms.
Scientific teams working at
the MCI have established
an exciting, and extremely
promising, non-invasive
approach to collect fluids
for the detection of highly
specific protein biomarkers
produced by pancreatic
and ovarian cancers. Using
advanced proteomic analyses
of the fluids, researchers have identified a
protein signature or “bar code” that is unique
to the presence of specific cancers. Funds
raised will support MCI’s efforts to refine and
validate the best set of biomarkers that could
eventually become a clinical screening test for
these aggressive, and otherwise deadly, cancers
offering new horizons for successful treatment
and improved patient survival.
Proceeds will also be used to build a new, state
of the art Birth Center at Thomas Hospital
to better serve the needs of
their growing patient base.
The current Birth Center is
delivering at its capacity and
welcomes more than 1,100
new arrivals each year, or
more than 60% of the babies
born in Baldwin County. A
new Birth Center will address
these demands by allowing
more space to provide moms
and families a calm, healing
environment, more effective flow of treatment
and time saving conveniences while being cared
for by our highly skilled team of doctors and
nurses.
The Thomas Hospital Birth Center medical
staff is currently comprised of 10 obstetricians
and 11 pediatricians. They are assisted by the
best registered nurses and the most talented
technicians and secretaries who support
mothers through the birthing experience with
warmth and respect. The Birth Center has the
highest breastfeeding rates in this region as
well as consistently high scores in customer
satisfaction. WomenCertified announced that
Thomas Hospital won the Women’s Choice
Awards for Best Overall Patient Experience
and Best Hospital for Patient Experience in
Obstetrics.
