Presidents Trumpet April 2020

Greetings to all,

It’s that time, my presidency has now come to an end. A little over three years ago you all elected me president elect. I had not been in the club that long. What was I thinking? What was everyone else thinking. Then, before I even took office everyone bumped there head again and elected me president. That would make it in essence a two-year term. What was I getting into? But looking back it has not been bad. I have gotten to see the personality of the club, for better for worse. All in all this has been a good experience. Please continue to give Kendall “The new sheriff in town” Workman the support that I have been extended.

I can’t let you all go without a little science stuff. Our sun is about two thirds the way to the edge of our galaxy. It takes our Sun 225 million years to complete one orbit around the Milky Way. That means the Milky Way is really big. Also when you look up in the night sky, you are looking back in time. The distances and the galactic speed limit, the speed of light, it takes time for objects to be seen. Wrap your head around that.

Thank you all.

In Olds we trust, Troy Manges

Presidents Trumpet April 2020April of the year 2020 will long be remembered by me as a month of transition. Transi-tion into my second term as President of the North Texas Oldsmobile Club, as well as transition of my lifestyle from being a supporter of social interaction and responsibil-ity to a promoter of social-distancing. I, not unlike many other individuals, have been working from home since March 16th. During this most recent time period, most, if not all, of my favorite and Q1 and Q2 annual car show and automotive related activi-ties and events have been appropriately canceled, owing to the national response to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) flu.As I think about our history of supporting meaningful social interactions among and between our NTOC members, as well as members of other car clubs and the various organizations that have come to rely upon our periodic and annual support, I am re-minded that we have great pool of talented members that can help us step-up and think of ways in which we might best serve one another, as well as others that may need our assistance during this time which has now become known as the “new norm.”To this end, I welcome receiving your creative ideas about how we as a club might continue to provide our worthy support to the following activities, while maintaining social-distancing and other health-safe practices in the near-term time period:

• Assisting NTOC members that may need assistance with grocery shopping, errand runs, pharmacy runs, etc.

• Supporting the Fisher House residents – what is their status?• Supporting our NTOC “Helping Hands” fund raising• Supporting our cosmetic and toiletry goody bag donations• Submitting ideas for additional considerations which our NTOC members feel

may be worthy of our supportOnward with a lighter topic: While being plagued with boredom, during this past weekend, I can tell you I have found a renewed passion for cleaning, polishing and tinkering with my Oldsmobile. I can hear it now….”cleaning and polishing what? That car is immaculate.” There certainly is something “special” about finishing a freshly pol-ished Oldsmobile chrome wheel, or fender and watching it gleam in the afternoon sun! I highly recommend this form of mental and physical therapy. Note: Next weekend, I am planning to replace the engine thermostat in my Olds and flush/replace the coolant as well. A bit less glamorous task, although very worthy indeed.Thank you everyone for your membership in the NTOC. Please stay safe and healthy. Until we have the ability to meet face-to-face again, please feel free to send me your thoughts, comments, requests, etc. to my email: [email protected] I will provide a summary of same in the May 2020 Rocket.

Note: An email update regarding the status of the May 2020 club meeting will also be distributed in mid-April as well.

And remember, “There is a special feel in an Oldsmobile.” Kendall

March 2020 Monthly Meeting Minutes

The March 2020 NTOC monthly meeting was held at Sonny Bryan’s Bar-B-Q in Rich-ardson, TX. President Troy Manges called the meeting to order at 2:00. Troy then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. There were 28 members and one guest present.

Treasurer’s Report Glenn Hargrove reported that the club is financially sound. Glenn mentioned that there is a balance of $736.00 in the Helping Hands Fund. Glenn presented the 2019 financial records to the club for officer review. Gene Crowdis and Kendall Workman reviewed the financial records for 2019 and found them correct. All income and disbursements were properly recorded with receipts to account for the disbursements. The 50/50 drawing was for $118.00. Club helping Hands fund received $59.00 in March.

Club Spirit Items

Caps and VisorsThe new NTOC Club caps and NTOC visors are still available. Cap price is $15.00 and visors are $12.00. Caps are available in a variety of colors, red, white, and charcoal. Harat reported that all but one (1) of the Royal Blue caps have been sold. Visors are available in red, royal blue and white. The caps have the NTOC logo, but the artwork was too large for the visors so they were embroidered with an Oldsmobile logo, a Texas flag, and the letters NTOC.

Club Logo Decals Lois ordered the two types of NTOC Club Logo decals and they have been received. Both decals are now available from Harat. The two types are: 1) die cut, back adhe-sive stickers and front adhesive decals. The decals are available to be purchased for $1.00 each. New members will receive a club logo decal as part of the welcome letter.

Denim Shirts with Club Logo Gene Crowdis located long sleeve denim shirts on-line that can be purchased with the NTOC logo for around $34.00 per shirt up to size XL. Larger sizes - add $2.00 for XXL and $4.00 for XXXL. If no set-up charge for the embroidery if order totals $150.00 or more. If you are interested in purchasing one or more of the denim shirts contact Gene Crowdis so we can determine if we have enough interest to pursue this option. Lois has the contact information for the company that we purchased denim shirts from in the past. She will check to see if they are still available and get a quote. The previous vendor should still have the program for the club logo.

Meeting Minutes (continued)

Our thanks go to these six members who provided the cars and to all of the members who helped with the set-up on Wednesday and Thursday, members who manned the display on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and helped with taking down the display. The Autorama provides an impressive exposure for NTOC and once in a while we run into an old member/friend or even get a new member who didn’t know about the NTOC.

Tom Bilse has volunteered to coordinate all of the Autorama activities for next year. Thanks Tom. We will support you!

During the Autorama discussion Gene Crowdis made a motion that beginning with 2021 the NTOC club display entry fee for the cars representing NTOC be paid by the club. Stewart Stephenson seconded the motion. After discussion a vote was held and the motion passed.

Car Shows and EventsAll car shows have been cancelled until the serious issues of the coronavirus COVID-19 have been brought under control

2020 NTOC Annual Zone Show – Postponed/CancelledAfter all of the preparations were completed the NTOC officers met by email to dis-cuss the impact of the coronavirus COVID-19 and agreed that the 2020 NTOC Zone Show would be postponed. There were no financial obligations involved in the post-ponement. We want to thank everyone who participated in the planning effort for the Zone Show, but as everyone now knows the event would have been cancelled by the restrictions implemented by local, state, and national governments.

Annual NTOC Mustang Club Participation Status of this show is pendingThe Mustang Club has moved their 2nd. Saturday Show to Flower Mound Square. They have invited NTOC to pick a month to participate in the event. The members present picked the second Saturday in September as NTOC participation month. Put this on your calendar.

Respectfully submitted Gene Crowdis

On a personal note.

My prayers are for the members of NTOC and their families to be safe from the COV-ID-19 pandemic. This is a very difficult time for our country and we all need to comply with the government mandates to stay home, practice social distancing, and all of the other recommendations that have been made by the COVID-19 Task Force. A lot of our members are in a risk level because of either health issues or because of our age.

There is no immediate good news. This will be with us for some time. Be safe, be smart, use your common sense and best judgement about your activities.

We need for everyone to be here when we get to the other side of this critical health issue.

Gene
