Llewelyn is the Oraltec Operations Manager, or as he is better known on the phone ‘Lew’.

Llew is originally from South Wales in the UK, where he grew up before moving to London to study Sports Science and Business Management at Brunel University in London.

After graduating, he spent the next few years working in retail management. Realising this wasn’t what he wanted to be doing long term, he decided to make a career change which resulted in working in the French Alps as a Chef. This is where he met his now Kiwi wife - they spent two years travelling and working in Europe before moving to New Zealand in late 2014 and settling on the North Shore in Auckland.

He joined Oraltec in July 2015 as part of the customer services team and since then has worked in a number of areas of the business including having his own small salesterritory - Northland.

He is now predominantly office based although his diverse skill set means he is able to support in many areas of the business and as well as being responsible for the day to day business operations - he has a hand in sales, marketing and is often the go to person for web and IT questions.

During his spare time, Llew has lots of hobbies to keep himself busy. He plays club football in winter, cricket in summer and any spare weekends are spent travelling the country. He and his wife are keen surfers and snowboard-ers. In 2019 they got married in Sri Lanka near one of their favourite surf beaches, before honeymooning the following week in Japan where they went snowboarding. A snow trip to North America is next on the to do list... any recommendations and top tips are welcome.

Although no longer a chef, he still really enjoys cooking and is the go-to person for recipe inspiration in the office.

During lockdown, Llew was one of those people that tried to learn some new home improvement and DIY skills. There was some success in the garden with a new deck and veggie garden, however this did come at the cost of some sore fingertips!

STAFF PROFILE DISINFECTION SOAK SOLUTION

Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of cleaning and disinfection for the entire world, whether it is cleaning hands, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces or in dentistry disinfecting impressions, oral appliances and dentures.

Cavex Impresafe is a disinfectant soak solution developed for dental use. Being highly effective, Impresafe kills bacteria, fungi and viruses in only three minutes. Due to the non- aggressive nature as well as short contact time, Impresafe is 100% safe for impression surfaces and will not cause distortion. It is economical, a one litre bottle will make 33 litres of ready to use solution which when changed weekly as per the instructions is sufficient for more than seven months.

When first tested by the Dental Advisor Impresafe received an impressive 5+ rating as well as the Editor's choice award. A long term disinfection study has now been done that evaluated the antimicrobial effectiveness on multiple clinical impressions and examined the effectiveness of Impresafe noting the number of impressions soaked over a period of time. A prepared solution of Impresafe was re-used for seven weeks to disinfect 380 impressions without any evidence of viable bacteria within the disinfectant fluid. This is an impressive result!

Cavex Impresafe was tested against Corona virus using the “Feline Corona Virus” which is closely related to the Corona virus Covid-19. Testing was performed by an independent laboratory which confirmed the effectiveness of Impresafe against the Feline Corona Virus after the test samples were immersed in Impresafe for 3 minutes. Based on this report and earlier virus test results it is concluded the Cavex Impresafe is effective against the Covid-19 virus.

Using instrument cassettes in dental practices reduces manual handling which has enormous benefits in many ways. Not hand scrubbing reduces the incidence of instruments being damaged and instruments are separated so they cannot rub together during cleaning and sterilization which extends instrument life. ObjectiveA high plaque resistance of denture teeth contributes to a good hygiene capability of removable dentures. Aim of this in-vitro study was the determination of adhesion of Streptococcus mutans bacteria to the surface of different artificial teeth.

Materials & MethodsStandardised specimens of 12 different tooth lines (anterior and posterior) were incubated with Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10449 at 37 °C for 2.5 h. A fluorometric assay (Resazurin reduction) was used for the quantification of accumulated microorganisms. The relative intensity of the fluorescent signal is directly proportional to the number of adherent micro-organisms.

Results

Adhesion of streptococcus mutans NCTC 10449 to artificial teeth: An in vitro study.

ConclusionsPremium 6 and Bioplus® anterior teeth showed the lowest values for adhesion of Streptococcus mutans (Fig. 1). No statistically significant differences were found between Premium 6 and Bioplus®. In order to prevent the develop-ment of denture stomatitis the authors recommend dental materials with low susceptibility to plaque accumulation.

Effect of polymerization methods and thermal cycling on color stability of acrylic resin denture teeth.

ObjectiveDiscolouration of denture teeth negatively affects the esthetics of removable dentures. Aim of the investigation was to determine the influence of different polymerization methods and thermal cycling on the colour stability of artificial teeth.

Materials & MethodsThe colour of ten different tooth lines was measured before poly merization, after polymerization (microwave, 500 W for 3 minutes, or water bath, 7 °C for 9 hours) and after subse-quent thermal cycling (5000 cycles between 5 °C and 55 °C) using a spectrophotometer. The respective colour difference (Delta E) was calculated.

Results

ConclusionsMondial 6 and Trilux® showed the lowest colour differences (Fig. 2). No statistical significant difference was detected between them. All colour differences obtained were assessed as not clinically relevant.
