Principal’s Report

Camps There was a strong emphasis on camps last week as the primary students were out and about on various trips away. The Year 3-4 students had a wonderful time at Swan Hill. They didn’t see ‘Swanny’ but had a marvellous time. Alynah reported that she liked the light show and dressing up in the olden day costumes while Emily loved riding on the paddle steamer. They both thought it was funny when Mr Williamson made them laugh so that he could get a photo. Meanwhile, the P-2 students had their extended day which is part of their introductory camp-ing program. The P-2 students had a superb day in Mildura with Mrs Hallam and Ms Penman. Despite the very hot day, the students managed to stay cool in a maze, in the water and in the swimming pool.

‘The maze was the best’. Hunter

‘The wave pool was my favourite part’. Byron

‘I liked the splash park at the river’. Sophie

Coming up soon will be the Year 5-6 camp. They will be going on a three-day camp in Ballarat. They depart on Wednesday 21st November and return on Friday 23rd. They will be staying at Sovereign Hill and enjoying a wide range of activities over the three days.

Exams Continue The Year 12 exams have continued this week and will go through until Thursday 15th Novem-ber. Following the last examination next Thursday, the Year 12 students and families will be attending the annual Valedictory Dinner.

Remembrance Day We will be holding our annual Remembrance Day service at 9am tomorrow morning. It will be a brief ceremony led by our school captains and will be held in room 10.

New Appointment I am pleased to announce that we have appointed a teacher for the primary setting next year. Amanda Cook has been appointed to take over the primary classes as Mrs Hallam will be mov-ing into the secondary section of the College. Miss Cook is well known in the Hopetoun area and is an experienced primary teacher. We welcome Miss Cook and hope that she enjoys her time at Hopetoun P-12 College.

Youth First Aid and Reach Over the past two days we have had speakers and presenters visit the College to work with our students around health and wellbeing. The sessions have been interesting and informative and are adding to our work on resilience, connectedness and responsibility. Mr Graeme Holmes

P-2 Excursion Last Thursday the P-2 students went to Mildura. We visited Woodsies Gem Shop. We had a go at the Maze. It was very hard.

We then went to the Splash Park at the river to eat lunch. It was nice to cool off.

After lunch we went to the Wave Pool. This was fun.

We then got to go to McDonalds after. We were all puffed!

All in all, I enjoyed the Mock Interviews. They were very beneficial, and I learnt a lot. As the first person to be interviewed for the day, I was told that I would be judged from the minute I walked in. That made me worry a little bit. I was most nervous about not knowing how to answer the questions but once I got in there I found that it was easy. I related and referred a lot to my current job, my interests and hobbies too. Next year, or when I go for a real job interview, I’ll know what to say and ask, and what to bring with me. The feedback I got I was very happy with. They said I had good eye contact and the way I related to real life situations was good. They also said it might be helpful to add my date of birth to my resume, along with a cover letter and add references. I will also have a question ready next time too. Tegan

Mock Interview Reflection

On Thursday the Year 10 and 11 students participated in Skillinvests running of Mock Interviews. Having the opportunity to be able to create a formal resume and also prepare for an interview with a potential em-ployer was fantastic. We were thrown into an inter-view situation and were asked questions that were based on our strengths, weaknesses, stress coping mechanisms, thinking strategies and our five-year plan for our future. It was conducted like a formal interview, and the ladies were immensely helpful in what we should be doing to improve not only our responses to their questions but also our resumes. Overall, I believe the experience helped a large num-ber of students in understanding the interview process, as well as how to conduct themselves properly in a slightly nerve-wracking situation. Jess

Mock Interview:

I found the Mock Interviews helpful because it gave me a taste of what a real interview might be like. I know what questions they might ask and how to answer them. They said to ask a few questions at the end but no more than 4 and that you can never know too much about the workplace you are going into. I was given feedback on my resume and told what else I could include on it and also what was good about it.

Mock Interview Reflection

Doing the Mock Interviews with Skillinvest has really helped me get a better understanding of how interviews would go and what type of questions they would ask you. One question I wasn’t expecting was ‘What are my strengths and weaknesses?’ I had to think on the spot for this question which I think is a good thing because the more you think about it the more you might put yourself down with your weaknesses. At the end they also asked if I had a question for them and I asked why the position is vacant. Asking a question shows the interviewer that you are interested in the job.

The Mock Interviews were a great idea and should happen again next year to help everyone get an understanding of what questions they could be asked in an interview. Katherine

Reflection: Mock Interviews

On Thursday, the Year Ten and Elev-ens went to the Gateway Beet for mock interviews. I found it was a great experience for myself and would recommend others trying it. The ladies there, Kate and Simone were the two interviewers and provided great feed-back to my responses, how to make my resume better by adding little details I may have missed and how to set it out better. The questions were sim-ple yet the expectation was high because they want to help im-prove how you would try to get a job with the interview. They told me that it is better to improve my resume because if they take a look at it and don’t like it they can reject it straight away, which was really great to know because it can help improve my skills for getting better results.
