Principal’s Report

ANZAC Day

We held a respectful ANZAC service at our College on Wednesday as a lead-in to ANZAC Day. Our school captains, Shiarne and Kiana led the ceremony and reflected on what ANZAC Day means to them. Then, yesterday, our school captains spoke at the community ANZAC commemoration at the town hall. Both Shiarne and Kiana spoke extremely well and provided a memorable and feeling introduction to the formal ceremony.

Colour Run and Film Festival

There is no doubt the colour run was an outstanding success at the end of last term. The run was superbly organised by our SRC. All participants seemed to enjoy the fun of getting ‘colourful’ with many combinations of coloured powder covering every piece of clothing as well as face, hands, arms – all-over!! It was a spectacular event which raised funds, well over $300, for the Lake Committee to continue their good work in improving the lake surrounds. It was impressive to see so many runners and walkers participating in this exciting event. Later in the evening, the film festival took place. Congratulations to our Year 5-6 students who participated in film making and getting a film through to the final production stage.

Term 2

We have a fairly crowded calendar for term two. The most important is learning. High quality teaching aligned with solid learning growth. We want every student to put in their best effort, work hard and do the best they can to extend their learning in every subject. Academic learning is front and centre.

We also have a strong emphasis on the social and emotional learning of our students. We want all to develop as well-adjusted, happy, healthy young people who are proud to be part of our College and proud to be members of our thriving community. And, let’s remember also, the physical development of our young people. The development of physical skills along with healthy attitudes are central to a good learning program.

Based on the above, we have a range of academic, social, emotional and physical development activities and programs lined up for term two. There are sport alternatives ranging from cross-country to athletics to netball and football. We have camps (Year 9 sailing camp) and it looks as though we will be able to have a shearing demonstration for the VCAL team. We have testing (NAPLAN and exams) and we have semester reports in June. Add to this there will be a range of SRC activities and initiatives, school photos and the Careers Expo. Drumbeat continues along with Rock and Water and a ‘Healthy Foods’ visiting performer.

It will be a positive, productive term focused on improving, participating and learning.

Dental Services – Royal Flying Doctor Service

The RFDS is providing a free dental service for all students attending Hopetoun P-12 College. Their initial visit will be on Thursday 2nd May (second week of term 2) to provide information to students on oral health. The dentists and staff will return again on Thursday 9th May (week 3) for those who return the forms indicating they would like to participate in the dental check-ups.

Coming Up

We have our whole-school cross country on Tuesday followed by the Primary cross country at Beulah on Friday. Parents Club will be meeting this coming Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Former Primary School Site

The Bruce Street campus is not managed by the Hopetoun P-12 College School Council. The former Primary school site is managed by the Department of Education through a private company. If you have any queries about management of the site, please contact the Department of Education and Training, Melbourne.

Welcome back Jacob

We welcome Jacob Holm back this week but no longer as School Captain! Jacob has joined the staff in the Primary wing as a Teachers Aide. We are fortunate enough to have Jacob working at the school full time for the remainder of the year. By the look on our young students faces, Jacob is a welcomed breath of fresh air and enthusiasm with the juniors. Welcome Jacob, we hope you enjoy your time with us.

Movie directors in the making………...

Congratulations to our Grade 5 & 6

students for their fantastic work at the Endorieic Short Film Festival.

All students were presented with a certificate in appreciation for their hard work, creativity and enthusiasm over the few weeks they had to work on their short films.

It was perfect timing, as some of the budding film directors were also extras on the filming of ‘The Dry’

Copies of The Dry are available for loan from the library.

Primary Prattle……...What’s happening in the

Year P-3 room?

On Thursday afternoons the Prep to 3 classroom complete STEM sessions. STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates many areas of the curriculum such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

STEM sessions allow students to develop many key skills including:

Problem solving

Creativity

Critical analysis

Teamwork

Independent thinking

Initiative

Communication

During our STEM Sessions students have been required to work in small groups, create a plan for the task, complete the task by following their plan and then state the changes they would have made to their plan.

Below are some photos of the Pyramids task.

Challenge: Build a pyramid construction that can stand by itself. It must have a point, square base and four triangular shaped faces.

Allowed materials: pipe cleaners, straws, blue tac.

Ms. Amanda Cook (Year P-3 Classroom Teacher)
