Definition of Disposable Clothing

Disposable clothing is often used as a supplement to reusable cleanroom gar-ments. It serves both for product protection and operator protection.

Attention should be paid that disposable clothing does not become an additio-nal particle source. Meaningful application, for e.g. with reusable garments, can achieve a contamination reduction.

A comparative study of disposable clothing vs. reusable clothing, treating the subject “self-contamination”, highlighted very interesting differences (cp. Chapter 2.6).

Depending on requirements, different designs and qualities have to be taken into account, e.g. antistatic, tensile strength, protection against toxic materials etc.

Due to application specific requirements in the world of cleanroom, the conside-ration of “operator protection in the cleanroom” as well as product protection moved into focus too. Both aspects should complement each other.

As there are no unified standards or norms which could be consulted to define e.g. a consumable article as ISO class 5, the following pages will hopefully help you to find the suitable item for your individual requests.

We are happy to advice you in the selection and can provide you samp-les for testing purposes.

Overview of different face mask materials

Disposable face masks are often used to protect the products or processes, but also to protect the employee (PSE). Besides the most important criterion, the filtration efficiency (BFE = bacterial filtration efficiency and PFE = particle filt-ration efficiency), wear comfort characteristics, such as resistance to air flow (= Delta P (Symbol: P) or Differential Pressure) and correct fit, as well as skin compatibility, are also playing a very essential role. The protective effect, res-pectively the filtration efficiency depends mainly on the material choice. Masks made from paper / cellulose based materials are not suitable for use in clean-room because the contamination risk due to low abrasion resistance is too high. Empirically synthetic materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene and polyes-ter are more suitable.

When defining the specification for a disposable face mask, the width is a not insignificant criterion. The face mask should cover the lower side of the face as well as the neck, so that skin and/or beard hair are completely covered.

Overview of different materials

Disposable clothing for the body is used for the protection of the employee (PPE), but also for the product and process. For the manufacturing of disposable garment, spun-bond fabrics are used nearly exclusively, which are then compacted with heat and pressure.Some examples are non-woven fabrics, so called SMS (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) which have good breathability; fabrics with an additional applied microporous finish (high barrier affec-tivity against particles, but only minor resistance against mechanical influences) or Tyvek®, the patented PE-HD fabric from DuPont. This fabric has high durability, low particle emission and very good barrier features.

Usually, disposable garments are manufactured in not controlled industrial ambient conditions. All contamina-tions falling and sticking on the disposable clothing during the manufacturing process are thus not removed, and will be brought therefore into the cleanroom areas. For this reason we recommend – wherever possible – to use subsequently cleaned disposable garment.

COMPARISON OF DISPOSABLE / REUSABLE GARMENTS 2.6

Certainly there are specific areas of application where the use of disposable cleanroom suitable garments is still reasonable.However it is important that in the critical environments (beginning at ISO Class 6 and better, respectively ISO class 4) it shall be ensured that the disposable clothing has been thoroughly pre-cleaned. Only pre-cleaned disposable clothing (material 2) is comparable with cleaned reusable cleanroom garments (material 7) with regard to particle emission.

Amongst the different disposable clothing systems currently available on the market, huge quality differences exist on the matter of their particle emission. An operator should check this before use in his cleanroom and should adjust them to his requirements.

We can offer personalised advice on this issue!

A standard solution is on trial

In various publications on the subject of “Disposable clothing for usage in cleanrooms” the impression has been given, and still is, that technically it has a lot to commend that disposable clothing from renown manufacturers can be used even in cleanroom class ISO 5 (according to ISO 14644-1) without restriction.The one who scrutinises this statement – suitable for application areas cleanroom ISO clas-ses 5 and 6 – will strike an essential detail which puts the unconsidered use of disposable clothing into question. In most cases disposable clothing will not be cleaned again after production. Thus all contamination conditioned from the production process will reach one-to-one the respec-tive cleanrooms unimpeded. We take this issue as an occasion to test how far disposable clothing can be used in a cleanroom in our own test cleanroom “Body-Box”, particularly from the point of view of particle emission.
