Fifth Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus bade them, “Untie him and let him go.” [John 11: 43-44]

What a powerful scene, Jesus calling a dead man, his friend, from death back into life! This dramatic moment is one we share in. Jesus tells the community of faith, “Untie him and let him go.” This is what you have done through your faithful relationships when you have been there for another, when your friend was at the worst, in the hospital, in the pits of depression, unemployed, unappreciated, ashamed, lost, separated from family, dejected or ill and at death's door. Like Jesus you called out to them with love and strength, called them by name, out of the clutches of darkness, back into the light of life.

It is really the Risen Christ calling through you to others, “Come out!” You invite others in-to a new shared life and you help to “untie” them and let them go free. God's extravagant love, is exercised in you, the face of the Risen Christ who is coming into the world.

Question of the Week: What questions do you have about death? Who have you accompanied in sickness and death? What funeral do you most espe-cially remember? Why?

Word for the week: Jesus wept: The shortest verse in the bible, and perhaps the most powerful. Grieving is a very holy embodiment of loss and most profound expression of love. This is how God shares in our humanity, in our most desolate feel-ings.

Quinto domingo de cuaresma

queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

Jesús gritó en voz alta: "¡Lázaro, sal!" El hombre muerto salió, atado de pies y manos con bandas funerarias, y su rostro estaba envuelto en una tela. Entonces Jesús les dijo: "Desátenlo y déjenlo ir.” [Juan 11: 43-44]

¡Qué escena tan poderosa, Jesús llamando a un hombre muerto, su amigo, de la muerte a la vida! Este dramático momento es uno en el que compartimos. Jesús le dice a la comunidad de fe: "Desátenlo y suéltenlo". Esto es lo que has hecho a través de tus relaciones fieles cuando has estado allí para otro, cuando tu amigo estaba en el peor de los casos, en el hospital, en los pozos de depresión, desempleado, no apreciado, avergonzado, perdido, separado de la familia, abatido o enfermo y a las puertas de la muerte. Al igual que Jesús, los llamó con amor y fuerza, los llamó por su nombre, fuera de las garras de la oscuridad, de regreso a la luz de la vida.

Brothers and sisters in Christ:

Life under lock-down has not been taken very realistically by our town yet. For three days in a row I went to the “small-mart” to buy bread and there was nothing but skinny pita bread left. Finally I went earlier the next day and there were 3 loaves of “Good Seed” bread left, my favorite. I started to take two loaves and my conscience said, “You only need one. Someone else needs those.” So I put a loaf back. Not two minutes later I ran into Joseph Johnson who said, “Wow, that’s there same kind of bread we eat. There was none yesterday.” Then I told him there was some waiting for him today. And he found a loaf. Slowly we are learning to share and not to hoard.

I have enjoyed more lively eye-contact with folks who are looking out for their neighbor. It is fun greeting folks out at the market. We really need each other’s recognition. Then there were care-packages from parishioners trying to cheer up the pastor and succeeding: cookies from a favorite grandma and baskets full of fruits and veggies, plus good cheer cards and tithes for the church, plus I even got a very colorful children’s circle cartoon for my refrigerator! Wow! Thanks for thinking of others and for phone calls to check in.

Although St. Joseph Church is closed for public worship, there are many things we can do support one another and remain a real parish family. Social Networking is critically important as we call one another and check in on the fragile and the elderly especially. Who do you call to check on every day? Our parish secretary is “Command Central!” for the parish and if you know of anyone who needs something and you can’t get it there, call Barbara. There’s a number of you who have called and graciously said we can call you to help pinch hit for people’s needs.

There are many links where you can find daily Catholic Masses. Thank God for Dave Callaway videotaping our own Cath-olic Mass once a week with a message from me, so you won’t feel lost from our own parish family identity. This will be availa-ble on Facebook and cable TV. We will have the church open for private prayer, especially on Wednesdays from 12 noon until 6 PM with Eucharistic Adoration. If you come to pray, be mindful of social distancing with the few others who are there. There will be a designated doorkeeper person to remind you that if there are more than 10 people, you need to limit your visit to no more than 20-30 minutes.

A favorite prayer for many of you during Lent are the Stations of the Cross. Barbara Albert, our secretary, has copies of meditations on the stations for you to walk around outside and enjoy in the spring air. Some may use the “Laudate App” which has an abundance of Catholic prayers. Paula Fales is going to give you some resources like that on our website. Check it out.

Confessions are available through appointments [478-284-5235]; even though Fr. Bob is self-isolating for health reasons. The First Communion Children will have an opportunity for their First Confession with me [Fr. Bob] before their First Commun-ion. Whether that will be on Mother’s Day as planned remains to be seen. “Everything will unfold in due time” someone said, while we exercise a tremendous amount of faith and hope waiting. When we come out the other end of this crisis and recognize the graces it provided, what hugging we will do! In the meanwhile some of us are practicing “air-hugs!”

Loaves and Fishes is operating on a very limited basis through phone appointments.

PRE is closed on Sundays as well, but that doesn’t stop parents from the duties as the “primary catechists” of their children. Lacey and Paula have a goldmine of internet links to help folks with this on our website.

3 PM every afternoon is important for many Catholics as “the Hour of Mercy” – many people stop to pray the rosary then. I like to pray: “This is the hour, Jesus, when the light of your love overpowered the darkness of sin. Help me bring a little of your light to others today. Amen!”

The strategy of self-isolation is difficult for most people, but that is what our government and church leaders have strongly recommended, especially for those over 60 and with chronic problems or lower immune systems. That includes me, so I will take some time in returning a few phone calls. But Barbara Albert will be on the alert in the office.

Support your church financially! We still have to pay salaries and power bills, so please make an effort to support us Finan-cially during these challenging times. You can mail your check in! Joe put up a metal box over the Holy Water Fount in church so you can put you tithes in there when you come to pray on Wednesdays.

Pray, pray, pray! As we continue to serve the spiritual and material needs of our neighbors, especially those who are ill or disabled, let’s remain united in Christ, even if we cannot receive Holy Communion; we can join ourselves more fervently in communion with each other for the love of God!

Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

La vida bajo encierro aún no ha sido tomada de manera muy realista por nuestra ciudad. Durante tres días seguidos fui al "pequeño centro comercial" para comprar pan y no quedaba nada más que pan de pita flaco. Finalmente fui más temprano al día siguiente y quedaban 3 hogazas de pan "Good Seed", mi favorito. Comencé a tomar dos panes y mi conciencia dijo: “Solo necesitas uno. Alguien más los necesita. Entonces puse un pan de vuelta. Dos minutos después me encontré con Joseph Johnson, quien dijo: "Vaya, ese es el mismo tipo de pan que comemos. No hubo ninguno ayer. Entonces le dije que había algunos esperándolo hoy. Y encontró un pan. Poco a poco estamos aprendiendo a compartir y no a acumular.

He disfrutado de un contacto visual más vivo con personas que están cuidando a su vecino. Es divertido saludar a la gente en el mercado. Realmente necesitamos el reconocimiento mutuo. Luego hubo paquetes de cuidado de feligreses que intentaban animar al pastor y lo lograron: galletas de una abuela favorita y canastas llenas de frutas y verduras, además de buenas tarjetas de alegría y diezmos para la iglesia, además de que incluso obtuve una caricatura muy colorida del círculo infantil. para mi refrigerador! ¡Guauu! Operation Rice Bowl: You are invited to par-ticipate in CRS Rice Bowl this Lent. This is one way to encounter Jesus through others, especially the most vulnerable in our world. Plenty of Rice Bowls are available in English or Spanish, on the southside of the church vestibule. Please take one home for your kitchen table and use this fun resource to deepen your family's experience as we learn more about “solidarity” with the poor through Prayer, Fast-

ing and Almsgiving. We can extend our Eucharist to be in solidarity with brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. Rice Bowls will be collected from Palm Sunday to Holy Thursday of Holy Week.

Prayer for peace and solidarity in a time of pandemic

Creator God,

We look to you during this time of illness, uncertainty, and physical distancing from others.

Be with us as we place our anxieties and fears in your hands.

Free us from the illusion of invincibility,

so that we might remember how our actions affect others, especially the most vulnerable.

Free us from the fear of scarcity, which leads to competition and hoarding.

Free us from painful anxiety, so that it can be transformed into caring actions for ourselves and others.

Jesus, our brother,

As your ministry of healing brought physical wellness and connection and restored community, help us remember that we are not alone.

As you mourned the death of your friend Lazarus,

be with those who grieve the loss of loved ones.

May they feel your presence and peace.

As you experienced death, be with those who have died from the coronavirus.

May they be in your eternal embrace.

As you challenged your disciples to act for the common good, be with national and local leaders who have the power to ensure that the “least of these” have their basic needs met.

Inspire them to have a global vision of solidarity, a consciousness and priority to provide healthcare to all.

Spirit of God, breath of life,

Thank you for the countless nurses, custodial staff, doctors, receptionists, therapists, healthcare providers, and all others who are working to care for those who are sick and suffering.

As they live their vocations, may they be sustained by your Spirit.

Open our eyes to see the devastating implications of economic and racial injustice during this crisis.

Be with vulnerable populations who are unable to have “social distance” from others,

thereby increasing their likelihood of contagion.

Inspire our actions for equitable access to testing, treatment, and financial support for all affected by coronavirus.

We pray together as the family of St. Joseph Parish that, during this Lenten season and current pandemic,

we can turn away from fear and be faithful to our sacred and civic responsibility for others.

AMEN.

Remember or honor someone this Easter with flowers placed in our Church. The cost this year is $20.00 per flower. All order forms must be returned with pay-ment by April 5, 2020.

Please mail your order form and donation to the Church or drop it off at the Church Office.
