Rev. Chatmon moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1982. He attended the School of Theology at Virginia Union University and graduated in 1985 with a Master of Divinity degree. Also, in 1985 he was hired as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Virginia Union University. He has taught in the Religious Studies Department for 20 years and has chaired the department for ten years. Rev. Chatmon earned a Master of Theology degree from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond in 1995. He has continued studies at the University of Richmond and the American University.

He is the former pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church in Mathews, Virginia (1985-1996). Rev. Chatmon has served as pastor of Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church since 1999. He now serves as Director of University and Church Relations as well as University Pastor of Virginia Union University. Rev. Chatmon and his wife Sheila are the proud parents of two children, Nora and Malachi. Rev. Chatmon believes that a congregation should be theologically developed, and he has endeavored to do so through his ministry.

Reverend Ciarra Smith-Bond was born and raised in Richmond, Va. She is a wife, mother, pastor, preacher, mentor, servant and friend of God. Ciarra is the wife of Ronald Bond, Jr. and they are the proud parents of two young men of valor, Calvin Jr. and Josyah. She is believer who has proven to be a faithful follower, humble servant and a Godly example of a virtuous woman! As a woman who firmly believes that she must be a living example for young ladies and youth that she mentors, she serves as a Senior Probation Officer. Ciarra received her Associates Degree in Funeral Service from John Tyler Community College. She later graduated Summa Cum Laude from Virginia Union University where she received her Bachelors of Science in Criminology and a minor in Legal Studies. In May 2018, Ciarra graduated from the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University and earned a Masters of Divinity degree. Ciarra was chosen by the faculty of the School of Theology to receive the 2018 Ella P. Mitchell Preaching Award which highlights a woman minister whose work is judged as pioneering a legacy of justice and wholeness for women preachers or women in non-profit organizations whose work displays uncommon advocacy and ministry in behalf of women and/or children.

As she matriculated through school, she began to question her next steps in vocation and ministry. Her destiny has led her into leadership within the ministry. Her role as Associate Pastor allows her to combine her passion, gifts and talents to help others gain a free and clear mind to tap into the greatness God has for them. Actively involved in the community, both professionally and personally, she has surrendered to her calling to be a conduit for liberation and rehabilitation. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she is committed to be of service to all mankind. Ciarra believes everyone is called for a purpose and everyday there must be great emphasis to fulfill that purpose. Her favorite scripture is “ She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come..” (Proverbs 31:25 NIV)

Union Branch Baptist Church

In 1890 Union Branch Baptist Church was established. 130 years ago, our church forefathers worshiped together in the balcony of Gill Grove Baptist Church. They continued worshiping at Gill Grove Baptist Church until the end of the Civil War. Once the war ended blacks were declared free, the communities of Union Grove and Union Branch came together and organized a bush arbor church on river road in Chesterfield, Virginia. On November 23, 1890, a congregation of believers branched from Union Grove Baptist Church to establish Union Branch Baptist Church. This group was led by the spirit to form a congregation where they could worship together.

Reverend George Smith was installed as the first Pastor of Union Branch Baptist Church. He pastored the church from 1890-1891. Rev. Smith pastored each month at Union Branch Baptist Church on the second and fourth Sundays, and he also preached at Union Grove Baptist Church on the first and third Sundays of each month. Union Branch Baptist Church has prospered over the 130 years under the leadership of fifteen Pastors. These included George Smith (1891-1891); W. B. Carrington (1891-1914); A. H. Gallop (1915-1922); W. B. Carrington (1922-1924); Jack Willis (1924-1930); A.S. Thomas (1930-1934); Willie L. Smith (1934-1942); Earl Redfield Knox (Interim Pastor (1943-1944); K.L. Brazil (1946-1955); L.S. Covington (1955-1966); Alonzo L. Thomas, Jr. (1966-1970); Isaac James (1973-1988); David L. Chapman (1989-2006); Gregory M. Howard (2007-2013); Kenneth E. Rioland, Sr., (2014-2019); Gregory M. Howard (2020-Present).

UBBC was chartered on November 23, 1890. The charter members included: Deacons Joseph Branch, Charles Brown, Augustus Gilliam, Robert Haskins, and Charles Mason; Trustee Martin Edwards; and First Mother Louisiana Gilliam-Edwards.

The congregation of Union Branch Baptist Church worshiped in the original church building during its early years. The second church building was erected in the early seventies. Over the years the church has been rebuilt four times since it was founded in 1890. The most recent building expansion was completed in 2011 and is where the congregation currently worships. Presently, Union Branch Baptist Church is blessed to be lead once again under the leadership of our 15th Pastor, Reverend Dr. Gregory Howard, who led Union Branch Baptist Church from 2007-2013. In March of 2020, the Lord sought to return Rev. Howard to once again pastor. According to Genesis 32:9-10 "Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, "Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper." Union Branch Baptist Church is "Going back in order to move forward" (Sankofa).

"We have come this far by faith" Union Branch Baptist Church is known as a "City of Hope" as countless strangers have entered and remained as family because of the genuine love and support they experience. The church continues to thrive because of the grace of God. During our storied history, God has called approximately 21 men and women to minister the Gospel and establish countless ministries. God's grace has allowed this community of faith to be used as an agent of change as many lives have been transformed through this church's ministry.

Our Mission: The purpose of this church is to advance the kingdom of Jesus Christ. we seek to attain this end through public worship of God, the preaching of the gospel, consistent Christian living by its members, personal evangelism, missionary endeavors, and Christian education.
