ABOUT USThe Women in Engineering club (WiE) in SFU, consisting of approximately 150 members, strives toencourage and support the excellence of underrepresented students who pursue engineering. Bynurturing strong academic and social relationships, we aspire to increase the presence of studentsin STEM - to not only succeed in their professional careers, but to inspire future generations ofengineers. Our current priority is community connections through WiE’s three major portfolios:
In their transition from high school to university life During their university careerInto the corporate world post-graduation
WiE provides guidance to groups that face adversity in engineering/STEM. All of this is possiblethrough programs and events such as the High School Outreach Program, Mentorship Program, andindustry focused events - including annual networking events and company visits.
WiE aspires to encourage and empower underrepresented students in their journey throughengineering. Numerous events and activities are held to support and develop each portfolio of ourmission statement. This is possible through our generous sponsors who promote the professionaland personal advancement of engineers. Our goals include to:
Promote an inclusive and diverse community and allow students to achieve excellence fromtheir transition from high school to their professional careers.Hold outreach programs which work to inspire students to pursue engineeringEnable community connections in the professional world through networkingStrengthen the bonds between mentors and mentees to knit the engineering community into a
cohesive, vibrant whole.

The purpose of this event is to provide anopportunity for Faculty of Applied Sciencestudents to network and connect withindustry professionals. A panel discussion isincluded where industry representatives havethe opportunity to share their experience asan individual navigating through the techindustry. The event concludes with a speednetworking session, which is a chance formore informal conversation and personalnetworking between our students and ouroutstanding guests.

NETWORKING NIGHT
WiE pairs first year mentees with mentorsfrom various years of the EngineeringScience program to cultivate a meaningfulrelationship that allows both participants’academic network to grow and continuouslylearn from one another. The aim of theprogram is to provide a sense of communityand involvement whilst transitioning intouniversity. Furthermore, WiE hosts awelcome dinner that brings together all of thestudents who have joined our mentorshipprogram.

We hold an orientation event for first yearEngineering Science students where we providea space to meet their new peers and to hear theexperiences from current students through acasual open panel. We touch upon topics suchas, homework resources, club/volunteeropportunities and tips on how to balancesocial/academic life. This event helps studentsease into the first week of university by havingfun.

To celebrate and acknowledge theachievements and accomplishments of womeninvolved in science, technology, engineeringand math, WiE hosts a booth on InternationalWomen’s Day. The booth has variousinteractive activities such as a spin-the-wheeland trivia games.
