Front Cover image: From ʻRumpelstiltskinʻ The first year Theatre Arts students at Swinburne (Prahran) recently performed Once Upon a Puppet - 7 short pieces

inspired by fairy tales in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the publication of the Brothers Grimmsʻ fairy tales. The students made all their own puppets under the guidance of Julia Davis

and devised their own presentations. Some revisited and updated favourite tales, others wrote their own, or explored beyond the ʻhappily ever after ʻ or how a dialogue might develop between characters from different tales. They considered issues of good/evil, cruelty and

comeuppance. The performance took place at the David Williamson Theatre on Swinburne Universityʼs Prahran Campus. from 3rd to 5th May.

WarHorse

The National Theatre of Great Britain and Global Creatures present

WarHorse in association with the Melbourne Arts Centre.

This multi -award winning production will open on 31 December and run until 10 February, 2013

The puppets were created by Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones of South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, based in Cape Town. They are made

out of cane and stretched georgette.

At a media launch at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, Finn Caldwell of Handspring Puppet Co. and the AssociateDirector of WarHorse in Australia talked about how the company had

consulted an equine behavioural scientist so as to understand and interpret a horseʼs

movements. The three puppeteers who work with ʻJoeyʼ, the horse protagonist, are responsible for conveying key ʻemotional indicatorsʼ; the head puppeteer

moves the ears; the heart puppeteer takes responsibility for the breath and and the hind

puppeteer moves the tail. The ʻheartʼ puppeteer is also responsible for the ʻweightʼ of the horse

and the hind puppeteer is in control of the horseʼs gait: walking in a 4 count, trotting in a 2

count and galloping in a fast 4 count.

Outside the Arts Centre Joey was introduced to Charlie, a Melbourne race horse. All those present held their breaths as Joey approached

Charlie, and sighed when they touched noses. Clearly, Charlie

accepted Joey as a fellow equine. Indeed, it was difficult to believe that

one of the horses was not a living biological being.

Kassius Kamel - correspondent

Oh No! Itʼs this h-h-horse thing again - humans getting all moist-eyed about a hay-eating, humpless hack who is sold to the cavalry during WWI and a devoted, heart-broken boy on a mission to bring him home: WarH-Horse.

Yes, indeed, so we ought to commemorate the ʻMagnificent Mounts of the battlefieldʼ; I would be the first to endorse such acknowledgement, but I think the attention is somewhat misplaced.

Most probably you are not aware of the the existence of the Imperial Camel Corps (formed in 1916) which took part in operations against the Turkish army in the Sinai desert. Moreover, the ICC battalions were mostly composed of Australians and they fought alongside Australian light h-h-horse units at Romani, Magdhaba and Rafa. The Camel Corps suffered heavy casualties during the Second Battle of Gaza in 1917, a most tragic occasion.

Do you know, I really think this could be the setting for a spectacular theatrical event, a sweeping drama of magical invention, brave, compelling, beautiful, heart-wrenching and life-affirming, an awe-inspiring odyssey which will make your soul rejoice!
