Diane took the idea to her knitting group and Henny Kaufmann, the President of Temple Emanuel’s Board of Directors, suggested present- ing the idea to Rabbi Foster. He was very much in favor and with his support, Best Years was born. The knitting group members – Lorraine Friedman, Joanne Friedman, Henny Kaufmann, Audrey Shulkin, Sophie Goldberg and Ruth Kornfeld – helped get the program off the ground and their group then became known as “The Best Years Needlecraft Guild.” In honor of Jack Zelinger’s uncle, Jack Paul Zelinger, Diane and Jack provided funding for programs and trans- portation. Monday was selected as a meeting day, and was named the catchy name,“Marvelous Mondays.” It took quite a group of talented, caring people who volunteered their time to bring wonderful pro- grams to the seniors.
