monthly fieldtrips. We co-operate with other clubs to encourage others to participate in our activity.

The Oxnard Gem & Mineral Society is a member of the State of California Federation of Mineralogical Society and the

National Federation of Mineralogical Society.

Speaker Presentations at the CFMS /AFMS Show

I took the opportunity to enjoy the presentations at the Show. Instead of writing a multi-page article on each Speaker,

here is a quick take on some of what I learned.

• The BLM is not enforcing any recent rules until they receive direction from Congress. Nevada public lands is

home to wild horses. The Mojave Desert area is home to burros. The BLM doesn’t count the burros but does

keep any eye out for them. The BLM is very interested in the public’s feedback.

• The price of Gemstone Beads will be rising as factories that make them are closing.

• It is still possible to find gorgeous agates in Arizona.

• It takes between one to two years for organic material to be mineralized when immersed in water. However,

no one knows how long it takes to turn mineralized material into petrified rock. Unfortunately, the Mt. St.

Helens eruption will not shed light on process as there isn’t water for the mineralization to occur.

• The closest place to find meteorites for us is in the Mojave Desert. Meteorites are easier to find on lake beds.

However, meteorites belong to the owner of the land it falls on. Alan Rubin of UCLA has looked for

meteorites on public land in the Mojave but has never found any. Nevertheless, a UCLA grad student has.

• UCLA has the largest collection of Meteorites on the west coast (which is open to the public) and holds a

monthly free lecture.

LuNeal Hailey CFMS Scholarship

At the 2017 CFMS / AFMS Show, OGMS donated $4,500 to the CMFS Scholarship Fund in LuNeal Hailey’s name.

Both of LuNeal’s husbands, John McCreavy and Edgar Hailey were Charter Members of the club. For the past 12

years, we have been selling rocks, shells, etc. from her collection to our members to benefit the CFMS Scholarship

Fund.

LuNeal was a hippie, enjoyed traveling and claimed to have invented granola. They say you can’t take it with you

when you die. LuNeal and Edgar did the next best thing – they put it on their gravestone. Edgar, who had served in

the Merchant Marines, chose a giant clam shell. I haven’t decided what stone adorns LuNeal’s.

I have spent over a decade collecting the money from the silent auctions, I will spend many more years enjoying the

rocks I have purchased. Thank you LuNeal.

TIPS FROM A JEWELER’S BENCH Brad Smith

www.BradSmithJewelry.com ========================================= FANCY RIVET HEADS

For a nice looking rivet head, use brass escutcheon pins. You'll have perfectly rounded heads that are all the same size and shape. The pins are a little hard to find, so try the best hardware stores first. Be sure to get solid brass pins, not brass plated steel. If unsure, test them with a magnet. The pins are readily available online. Lee Valley Tools has them in 14 - 18 gauge and lengths from 1/4 inch to 1 inch. Go to http://www.LeeValley.com and do an item search on "brass escutcheon pin" For best results, select a drill that gives you a hole with a close fit to the rivet. Trim the rivet to a leave a little less than one diameter sticking out the back side. Place the head on a scrap of hard plastic on the anvil so as to not flatten the head. I prefer a ball peen hammer (with a small 3/8 inch ball) for setting the rivet.

------------- EASIER PRONG SETTING

• When setting stones in a prong mount, the tool is less likely to slip off the prong if you grind a groove into its face or rough up the face a bit with sandpaper. Some folks prefer a prong pusher for doing this, and others like a set of pliers.

The easiest way to create a slot on the pusher is with a file, and the easiest way to create a slot on one jaw of your pliers is

with a cutoff wheel. Then rough polish the slot with a medium grit, knife-edge silicone wheel.

Agenda for the June 2017 OGMS Board Meeting

Meeting called to order at 7:16 pm, Stephanie Hagiwara, presiding. In attendance: Stephanie Hagiwara, Miriam Tetreault, Kathy Scharf, and Laura Driskell. Lacking enough elected board members for a quorum, no motions were introduced or voted upon. Board meeting minutes from May were printed in the Rock Bag. Kathy said she still doesn’t get a Rock Bag, so the Secretary will forward the bulletin to all members again. Officer Reports: 1. Programs, 1st VP Stephanie Hagiwara: Correction to May meeting minutes, the July meeting is the summer potluck. August meeting is the VC Fair Field Trip. 2. Treasurer, Miriam Tetreault: Discussion of bills and deposits, with the decision to pay the PO Box rent and the City of Oxnard class fees before they become past due. Other items discussed: A. The third alternate signatory on the Union Bank account is no longer an active Board member. Another signatory may be selected from among the newly elected Board members in November. B. The payment for security at Durley Park has been billing to Jean pSmith’s credit card monthly, with her request for reimbursement by the club. Stephanie will ask Jean to look into the possibility of paying one year in advance (possibly resulting in a cost savings). Stephanie also recommended the Society look into obtaining a Society credit card that would be used for on-line and other credit card-required billing, relieving members from using their personal cards. C. The Program for July is Pot luck, and the club will provide meat for Adrian Ruiz to barbeque. Any member who has dietary restrictions, or wishes to bring their own meat to barbeque is welcome to do so. 3. Corresponding Secretary, Laura Driskell: Two pieces of mail were received: A letter from a potential dealer for the November show was given to Miriam. A reminder from ALAA to renew membership was given to Miriam to research, as we may have already renewed. 4. Federation, John Cook: not present. Stephanie reported that several flyers for classes and event posters went out to the public at last weekend’s CFMS/AFMS show. She attended the Editor’s breakfast, and reported that member Bob Driskell won an award for an article submitted on a field trip. Also, John Cook presented the LuNeal Scholarship check to the CFMS during the Director’s meeting. Stephanie will look for the pictures of the presentation, and send to the editor for publication in the Rock Bag. 5. Library, Kathy Scharf: The library has been sorted and re-arranged to make finding materials easier. The VHS tapes are in bad/questionable shape, so Kathy will make notes on which programs are available on-line or on DVD from the publishers. She will work on updating the binders for procedures, library offerings, etc. "Kathy has added DVDs to the library inventory; this month's Rock Bag will be an announcement high lighting items added to the library Jan-Jun this year." 6. Refreshments: July is summer pot luck! Bring a side dish, a place setting, and a guest. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. 7. Pebble Pups: No Pebble Pup meeting in July, but PPs and parents are invited for the member potluck. 8. Classes/Shop Steward, Jean pSmith: Not present. A phone conference was held to determine the fees due the City of Oxnard. Jean is still waiting for one more report from an instructor. The MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) from the city arrived, and Jean will review it to ensure that no changes have been made since the last version. 9. Scholarships, Kay Hara. Not present. Stephanie reported that Eva Gomez informed the Scholarship Committee that a decision regarding funding the CSUCI scholarship will need to be made by November. OLD BUSINESS: Miriam Tetreault printed the current 2003 By-Laws, and the Corresponding Secretary will mail one to each member (one to each household), except for members who have received a copy already. The Board Members have received an email copy of the proposed 2017 By-Laws, and have until July’s board meeting to complete reviews, and make corrections. NEW BUSINESS: Stephanie mentioned the tailored tablecloths that VGMS used for their March show and the CFMS/AFMS show. The tablecloths replace the vinyl skirting on many of the tables and reduce skirting from hours to minutes. The club has enough funds to provide this kind of skirting, and many of the members who used to do skirting are no longer available. The subject will be brought up at the next Show meeting. Announcements: Next Board Meeting date, July 12, 2017 at 7:00 pm. Adjournment: Meeting adjourned by Stephanie Hagiwara at 8:46 pm. Respectfully submitted, Laura Driskell, Secretary, June 14, 2017

Minutes of the OGMS General Meeting, June 7, 2017

Meeting called to order at 7:30 pm, Stephanie Hagiwara, presiding. Sergeant-At-Arms, Larry Knapton, led Pledge of Allegiance. Hospitality: There were 19 members signed in. We had 5 adult guests, and 10 Pebble Pups signed in. 1st VP, Programs: Tonight, guest speaker Eva Gomez, from California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI). Also, a presentation on Mineral Explorers. July is member potluck at 6:30pm. August is Fair Volunteer Day. September, Adrian Ruiz on tourmaline mining. October, pink halite. November, show meeting. December, holiday program. Guest Speaker: Eva Gomez, spoke about the changes to the CSUCI scholarship/giving program. The leadership of the school made a decision to change the way scholarships are assigned. There is no discrimination allowed in the assignment of scholarships, but the school can work with us in the determination process (Proposition 209, 1996). There are many scholarship applications, and there are gaps in the number of scholarships assigned. The Chancellor’s office is trying to eliminate discrimination. The school needs volunteers to read the scholarship applications, so if anyone is interested in doing that, please contact Eva. Recording Secretary: May Meeting Minutes were printed in the Rock Bag. Miriam Tetreault moved to approve the May minutes as printed. Motion seconded, approved. 2nd VP, Show: Diane was at fairgrounds for setup of the CFMS/AFMS Show tonight. She wanted to remind OGMS members that VC Fair applications are open now, to enter items into the Fair. July Refreshments:.Potluck! Adrian will BBQ meat provided by OGMS. Scholarships: Board will discuss new guidelines next week. Refreshments by Bonnie Thaanum, Jean pSmith, and Carolyn Howe. Thank you! Ways & Means: Guests received door prizes. Candy Marshall won badge drawing. Guest, Christopher Aguirre won bonus drawing. Ways and Means made $80. Next General Meeting, July 5, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. Pebble Pups meet at 6 p.m. Board Meeting next Wednesday the 14th, 7:00 p.m. Stephanie Hagiwara Adjourned the meeting at 8:57 pm. Respectfully submitted, Laura Driskell, Recording Secretary, June 7, 2017.
