Officials are always saying that the Vil-lage of Oxford is a great place in which to dobusiness. Well, now they have a universitystudy to back up their boast.

On Tuesday, the village was recognizedas one of the top 55 communities in the en-tire state, according to the 2010 eCities project.

Oxford was one of 28 communities givena five-star rating. The remaining 27 munici-palities achieved four-star ratings.

I thought that was really something tobe proud of, said Madonna Van Fossen, executive director of the Downtown Devel-opment Authority.

eCities is an annual study that examinescommunity factors that influence entrepre-neurship, economic development and jobgrowth in cities, townships and villages.

Conducted by iLabs, which is the Uni-versity of Michigan-Dearborns Center forInnovation Research, the studys primarypurpose is to understand and share the bestpractices for entrepreneurial growth.

The communities who receive star hon-ors are obviously some of the best communi-ties in Michigan to do business, said Timo-thy Davis, director of iLabs. Its actuallysomething were quite proud of recogniz-ing these communities as places that are fo-cused on understanding what it takes forentrepreneurs and small businesses to growinside them and help Michigans overalleconomy.

As a five-star community, Oxford sharedthe spotlight with Ann Arbor, Troy,Northville, Novi, Royal Oak, Southfield and

Frankenmuth to name a few.To Van Fossen, earning this honor indi-cates theres a lot of communication be-tween the businesses, the DDA and the vil-lage council.

Its a business-friendly community, shesaid. We offer a lot of resources for our busi-ness, from training to partnering with largercorporations. I imagine our partnership withRelume (Technologies) had a big impact.

Based in Oxford, Relume is an LED light-ing manufacturer that the village has workedclosely with to obtain grant money and ret-

    energy-efficient LED systems.

A total of 112 communities from acrossthe state were surveyed for this years eCitiesstudy, which constituted the largest numberof participants since the research project be-gan in 2007.

These communities represented a third ofthe states population, according to Davis, and are home to 128,242 entrepreneurs whoearned $3.4 billion in annual income. Thesecommunities also had $1.2 billion in commer-cial development last year and account fornearly half the states commercial property.

Its actually a pretty impressive group,Davis said. Were pleased to have Oxfordas part of that group.

Unlike other entrepreneurial indexes,eCities examines growth at the communitylevel.

Using data supplied by participants as wellas public records, the annual research projectassembles a six-factor, 30-item index.

The study examines things such as taxrates and incentives, changes in businessactivity and commercial construction, theuse of economic development tools by lo-cal government, socioeconomic and culturalfactors such as crime rates and householdincomes derived from self-employment, andthe education levels of residents.

The growth factor was an area whereOxford was one of the stronger communi-

ties, Davis noted. They saw some growthlast year.Information for the eCities study was pro-

vided by Van Fossen and village ManagerJoe Young, both of whom answered a seriesof questions and participated in phone in-terviews with researchers.

The communitieswho receive starhonors areobviously some of

the best communi-ties in Michigan todo business.

TO HELP YOU CREATE ANINVESTMENT STRATEGYWELL CONSULT WITH AN EXPERT - YOUWhile markets and lifestyles may change, its likely your lonterm financial goals have not. Thats why its so important ttake advantage of our free portfolio review at least once everyear. Together well assess how changes in your career, aspirationand goals can impact your investments and discuss whetheadjustments are necessary to help keep you on track to wheryou want to be long term.

Call your local Edward Jones financial advisor today to schedule you

    free review.

If you have young children, or even if youjust have some in your neighborhood, youknow they will soon acquire large amountsof free candy, obtained by im-personating witches, vam-

pires and other scary crea-tures. As an adult, of course, youre unlikely to encountertoo many monsters after Hal-

loween ends. Yet as you gothrough life, you will find somethings that are truly alarming such as scary investment moves.

Here are a few of these frightful actions: Investing too conservatively You

could try to avoid investment risk by puttingall your money into very conservative invest-ments. However, as youre probably aware, those investments typically pay very little inthe way of interest, so your money couldactually lose purchasing power, even with amild rate of inflation.

    Investing too aggressively Just as

investing too conservatively can be coun-terproductive, so can investing too aggres-sively. Obviously, you would like your moneyto grow, but the investments with the high-est growth potential are usually also those

that carry the greatest risk to your principal. Putting too much money in too few in-

vestments If you put too many of yourinvestment dollars into just one or two types

of assets, and a downturn hits those assets, your portfolio will probably take a big hit.

Waiting too long to invest As an in-vestor, your biggest asset may be time. Themore years in which you have to invest, the

greater the likelihood that you can makeprogress toward your important financialgoals.

Its no treat to be tricked by

scary investment moves Taking a timeout from investing

During periods of significant market volatil-ity, such as weve seen the past few years, you might be tempted to take a timeoutfrom investing and stick all your money into

very conservative vehicles until everythingblows over. But the financial markets willnever be totally calm, nor will they be pre-dictable. Market rallies can start unexpect-

edly; if youre not invested when that hap-pens, you may miss out on growth opportu-nities.

    Ignoring tax-advantaged investment op-

portunities When you invest in a tax-de-ferred investment account, such as your401(k) and a traditional IRA, your money hasthe opportunity to grow faster than it wouldif it were placed in an investment on whichyou paid taxes every year. If you arent con-tributing to your 401(k) and you haventopened an IRA, youre missing out on a greatchance to build resources for retirement.

To make sure you dont fall victim to these

scary investment moves, you need onlylow a few simple principles.

First, take the long view you wilups and downs in the short term, but hiscally the market has performed well ove

long term.(Keep in mind, though, that past pe

mance is not guarantee of what will hapin the future.)

Second, diversify your holdings amovariety of investments.

Diversification, by itself, cannot guatee a profit or protect against loss, but it

help reduce the effects of volatility.Try to build a diversified portfolio b

on your risk tolerance, time horizon and lterm goals. And finally, consider booyour 401(k) contributions whenever salary increases and fully funding your each year.

Halloween comes but once a year, but sinvestment moves can haunt you for a life so take the right steps to help avoid th

Between the deafening noise and speed-ing traffic, downtown Oxford isnt exactlythe most inviting place to take a leisurelystroll while doing some shopping.

But Anna Taylor is on a mission tochange all that and make downtown a safer, friendlier place for folks who arent travel-ing via motorized vehicle.

Weve gotten to the point where wehave healthy, successful businesses intown and I think that one of the things wedefinitely need to improve on right now isour pedestrian traffic, she said. Our pe-destrian traffics not healthy. We need todo something to improve that perception.

Taylor, who owns Pink & Charlie (14 S.Washington St.) and serves on the Down-town Development Authority board, isworking to get the village and DDA in-volved in the Complete Streets movement.

Complete Streets policies aim to ensurethat when engineers and planners designor renovate roadways, they do so to ac-commodate all users, not just motorists.Other users include pedestrians of all ages, bicyclists and people with disabilities.

On Aug. 1, Gov. Jennifer Granholmsigned a pair of Complete Streets bills intolaw. These laws mean the Michigan De-partment of Transportation (MDOT) isnow required to consider all roadway us-ers in all phases of road project planning, development and construction.

As a merchant and DDA board mem-ber, Taylor believes increasing

downtowns walkability is key to increas-ing economic development and making thebusiness community more prosperous asopposed to simply surviving.

Right now, Taylor said the walkabilityin downtown Oxford is quite lacking.

Between speeding cars and large trucksslamming on their brakes, she said manypeople dont feel safe walking or crossingthe street. Plus, the noise is awful.

But make no mistake, Taylor is not say-ing she wants to get rid of all the traffic.

We dont want the traffic to go away, she said. The traffic is a blessing. Thetraffic brings business, she said. We justwant it safe for our pedestrians. We wantit quieter and calmer, so that when theyare experiencing the downtown, theyrenot afraid and they dont feel like theyre

going to be blown off the sidewalk. In order for this to work, Taylor wants

the community to get involved in the dis-cussion and give their input.

Dan Burden, the nations most recog-nized authority on walkability and otherroad/pedestrian planning elements, will begiving a presentation for the Oxford com-munity from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday,Nov. 10. The location has yet to be deter-mined.

    Confused about credi

card processing fees?Business owners ask me all the timewhy the contract they signed with an-other processor is more expensive thanthey expected.

The answer lies in themany types of process-ing fees a processor cancharge.

It is confusing, andbecause there are somany credit card pro-cessing fees to look forit is easy to misinterpretthe fees.

Rarely, it seems, are all fees andminimums revealed in one place. Manymerchants sign contracts that first ap-pear low cost and upon execution, turnout to be pricey.

Similarly, expensive sounding solu-tions may actually be all inclusive andin an apples to apples comparison, turn out to be better for the merchant.

Merchants are generally lured in with

discounted rates but are ultimacharged more.

The advertised rate will apply oto a certain type of card or will chidden surcharges.

Some possible fees are applicafee, yearly membership, set-up feecess fees, statement fee, discount raddress verification, transaction feethorization fees, monthly minimucancellation fee and chargeback fe

Rush to your boyfriends wardrobe to find the looksof the season!

It is nothing new that women flirt with the male ward-robe. Marlene Dietrich, the German movie Diva fromthe 1930s was the pioneer for this style by introducingthe once typical male suit to the women everyday dress-ing style, revealing then a sensuality not so obvious butsuper attractive.

Be it on the everyday looks, be it dressed for a party, the biggest secret to dive into the fashion trend is to knowto balance the two distinct realities.

Wide shoulders blazers are now warming up the tailormade pants and are starting to appear over rufflesdresses.

Excellent choice with cuffed jeans, this outfit trans-forms itself into a perfect partner to the girlie tops.

As for the shirts, they are growing in length and showa sensual way by transforming themselves into dressessimilar to tunic jackets, gaining a lot of femininity.

Rush right now to the wardrobe of your boyfriend orbrother and take from there the inspirations for the sea-son that is about to start.

Stop anytime at Ella Fashion in downtown Oxford tosee the amazing and fabulous collection that has just ar-rived for the beautiful autumn days.

In this world, on this very day, there is alot of victims who suffer from emotionaltrauma. That is what motivated Jeff Papadelisto discover how to help people who haveexperienced anger, sadness, fear, or guilt on aregular basis.

So what I started looking at is, what do Ineed to do to help people release their emo-tions. We all have emotions, we all have feel-ings, and we always will. But what is crip-pling to us is when we continually relive anegative experience from our past. Perhaps avictim of child abuse, divorce, military trauma, loss of a loved one, loss of job or income.Said Jeff Papadelis. The reality is, that itdoes alter our lives, because when we gothrough something like that, we start seeing

ourselves as being less than who we are, itcompromises our self worth, our values, some-times, our image of who we are, perhaps evenour identity. Some describe it as being in anemotional prison.

After years of travel and studying Jeff dis-covered NLP & Time Line Therapy .

    Talking to your

kids about moneyYou can help your children prepare

for the future by giving them the toolsthey need to survive and do well in theworld and environment in which theylive.

In the United Statesof today, that meanshelping them understandthe value of and the con-cepts of earning, using, saving and investingmoney.

    Parents often don't

teach children aboutmoney for several rea-sons.

Sometimes theydon't think it's neces-sary. Sometimes theyfeel that, since they are not "financialexperts," they are not qualified to dis-cuss it.

Robert T. Kiyosaki, in his bestsell-ing book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, givesthe analogy of an agricultural societywhere children are not taught the ba-sics of farming.

Whether we like it or not, money iscentral to the lives of people in our coun-try today. Therefore, it's important to

give our children the basic understand-ing they need.Just like squirrels that spend the

summer storing away food for the win-ter, people need to put away some ofthe money they have now to have it later.

Teaching kids to save a little moneyeach week to pay for a large ticket itemthat they want (bicycle, computer,iPod), or so that they will have spend-ing money of their own to use on thefamily vacation, can help them under-stand the importance of budgeting theirmoney.

Let your children save up for a rela-tively short-term purchase so they canexperience the pleasure of being able tobuy something on their own after hav-ing controlled their urge to just spend it.

Some kids don't learn how to ap-preciate money if they get everythingthey ask for.

Give them some leeway, togetherwith guidance, in how to spend theirearnings, gifts, and allowance.

At the same time, know where youpersonally want to draw the line. What

will you buy for them, and what willthey have to pay for themselves?

Some children want clothes in ex-cess of what their parents deem neces-sary.

Others are caught up in fads, suchas collections and music, and just "haveto have" a new item every few days.

These are areas of parental discre-tion and may change as the child growsolder. But, whatever you do, make surethere are at least some things your chil-dren will have to pay for themselves.

Teach your children to "pay them-selves first" by putting away part of theirearnings and gifts.

Another approach is to have yourchild can open two accounts. One canbe to save for a large purchase, such asa musical instrument or equipment, andanother for the faraway future.

When a child accrues enough sav-ings to purchase the object, you havetaught him an important lesson: savingis really worth it.

And as the money grows in the far-away future account your child will seethe benefits of savings towards a downpayment on a car or having money forcollege.

When your kids feel comfortabletalking to you about money, you'll haveestablished an important bond that willgrow in years to come as your childmakes career and investment decisionsas an adult.

Lakes Community Credit Union canhelp you with the task of teaching yourchildren the basics of handling money. We offer free 1.5 hour classes to teensin our community.

Your teen can learn more aboutmoney by coming to Lakes CommunityCredit Union's Teen Financial Workshopon Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. at our Lake Orionbranch.

The workshop will be covering top-ics such as the importance of havingfinancial goals, establishing a good creditscore, getting into good savings habits, and understanding different financialproducts along with any associated in-terest rates and terms.

Please call 248-814-4000 ex 4060to reserve your seat.
