Pip pip and cneerio! June has certainly zipped by in a soggy hurry, and the recent sunny weather is cause for cheering.

On Saturday, the 16th, Nancy Dice, Hugh Rogers, Bob and Janis Hauge, Mike and Bitsy Miles and I gathered to attend to business. Sincere thanks to all, and to Dave, Sharon, and Rick Cammarano for the use of and access to the warehouse for our meeting room. Thanks to Bitsy for filling in as secretary and taking the minutes. One issue that everyone should be aware of is the possibility of raising next year's dues to adequately cover expenses. we will vote on this at the September quarterly meeting, so you all have time to give the matter some thought and give us input.

Our thanks also go to Dave Sweeney and some junior member(s) at cuis law firm, for revising the club by-laws to reflect the changes that have been implemented in the last two years.

On a more playful note, the picnic at the locks near Ballard was a grand success. The sunshine was a welcome surprise, new books were sold, and food and laughter were our usual companions.

See you next at the Bellevue All-Brit, and note that the logo is a Jimmy Dietz design. He has a great eye, even if he sold his 'ifog.

This is the person we chose as our leader. No kidding! Any second thoughts, Jack?

MINUTES OF THE HOG-NW SECOND QUARTERLY MEING

The meeting was held on Saturday, June 16, 1990, at Cammarano Brothers ware-house in Olympia, Washington. Present were Bob and Janis 1-Lauge, Nancy Dice, Mike and Bitsy Miles, Hugh Rogers, and President Jean MacNeil.

The meeting was called to order at 10:50 a.m. in the warehouse board room. We discussed the upcoming All-Brit Field Meet in Bellevue, followed by a party at the Wellington's, featuring simplified approach to food and the possibility of regalia sales (depending on the sales tax situation). The rreasurer's report indicated concern that by summer's end there may be a big cash flow problem, due to obligations for the All-Brits and the Mogazine. iloved and passed: A formal discussion of dues structure will be held at the September quarterly meeting.

fhe Editor reported interest in advertisements in the Mogazine. Fees for Morgan-related ads were duly established. t'lembers will not be charged for small "wants and sells" ads. Regalia reported sales status, including strong interest from Morgans on the Gulf tiOG. Possible future regalia includes 'wings' lapel pins and "I Baby My Morgan" diaper car rags. Bob 1-lauge reported for Heinz Stromquist (on tour in England and Austria) that we still lacK an organizer for tne Portland All-Brit. He also presented the draft form of the by-laws updated by Dave Sweeney's law firm, to be reviewed by the officers prior to finalization.

Otner general discussion included the advisability of including a desig -nated membership/regalia form carrier for each event and road trip.

The meeting adjourned at 12:20 p.m.

Respectfully submitted, Bitsy Miles -- Secretary Pro-rem

NORTHERN SOCIAL MEE]ING: BALLARD LOX PICNIC

To a boatload of sailors (Army sailors, no less) Jean t'lcN. says "Hey sailor, new in town?" To me it's "Hey Gary will you write this up?' So you know wnere Jean and fr. Faithful Corres. stand, and wny. dear readers, this isn't being written by Dave Erbeck, Ron i4eiskind, Glenn Jewett, Hugh or Joan Rogers, Terry Campbell. 1artna Pendergast, Dave, 'Iark or rhea wellington, Dick Dice, Hike Amos, Claude or Christine (?) Dennis, or Jack Tinnea, or Craig Runions. or Pamela. All these people came to the picnic at the locks diram Cnittenden) in Ballard (not, thank Cod, in Panama). All you people

wno didn't come -- and you know who you are (B & L, D & J, N, L, A. etc. etc.) -- tsk tsk. N, L, and A you should have seen your men carrying on.

As a picnic place trie locks could only have been improved by having reserved parking for classic wooden sports cars and one faux. A great picnic spot so let's hear it for Hugh and Joan. Besides they personally caused the rain to stop falling. Personally, since knowing Joan I've stopped calling my fake a fake -- it's now a faux.

The only business I heard was no meeting in July -- just cone to trie All-Brits and follow us to Dave and Thea's. And while we're on the Weilingtons, thea cane witn their son HarK, and as they were walking up I thought it was Dave witn a face lift. So if you thought I was staring Hark, that's why.

Hike Amos must've brought 20 or 30 copies of Horgan Cars Gold Portfolio. The first batch went right now so Hike went for reserves. Just another reason to come to meetings, you never know what Hike's got in that 4/4.

we'll see you at tne All-Brits, July 21. Call rhea and ask if you can bring anytciing. Yr. F. C., Gary and Pam Bell

On Tuesday, June 19, thirteen members of the southern contingent gathered in the gardens of the Cornelius Pass Road House (affectionately known as the CPR House) determined to get their cholesterol up to heroic levels. Judging by the food that was consumed, by the interesting conversation and by the delightful summer weather the evening lived up to expectations -- except per-haps in Julian's case. It seems every time we frequent this pub, his food order is either altered beyond recognition or totally lost in the kitchen. One of the waitresses was overheard saying something to the effect that Tipping is not a city in China.

Malcolm related the sad story of trying to get to the Vancouver All-Brits in a friend's Austin Healey. It seems that with the help of another motorist they lost an argument with the 1-5 divider in l'acoma and had to return to Portland by bus. He finished by saying that this adventure wasn't as bad as when 1-le crashed his airplane!! Anyone for flying?

Other stories of woe included: Bob and Janis' disappointment of having to cancel their trip to Cambria, Roscoe's lament on receiving a tax appraisal on his Washington St. farm for tens of millions of dollars (which sad to say is worth a few zeroes less) and Dwight's battle with giardia picked up somewhere in Indonesia through a hastily consumed glass of hotel water. I'll spare you cne gory details (you'll lose your appetite); suffice it to say that the cure comes close to killing the patient. Who said our meetings are dull?

i'he best story of all (eat your heart out Chaucer) was told by Dwight with an encnusiasm and delight that goes beyond mere words. As a result of Ken Hill's offer to help three-wheeler owners trace the history of their cars using the material he had collected for a new book, a series of letters led to a most surprising response. Dwight received a letter from the nephew of the his car's original owner, now living in Yorkshire, plus two pictures snowing the correspondent's uncle, grandmother, and the brand spanking new F series: Ihe only time we've seen greater pride was when the pictures of young master Clark were shown!

Next meeting at the Rock Creek Tavern. Bring your Hogs, we'll sit on tne deck and admire them. Heinz Stromquist

Powley on Tour • . .on things Morgan in the U.K., including

a visit with Peter Morgan by Mike Powley

For those members who were at the post-All-Brits bash at the Powley home on May 19th, the mentioned

meeting with Peter Morgan scheduled for June 7th turned out just fine.

First, thanks to John Bridcutt, a Malvern resident and Jaguar Car Club member connected with the organi-

zation of the World Jaguar Weekend event, a room in the Cottage in the Wood Hotel was reserved for me. A

word must be said about this place for those who may go to the Malvern area. The hills are part of the

ambiance of Malvern and this place is about as high in the hills as you can get -- a tremendous view,

good food, etc. Its somewhat hampered in location relative to Malvern if you don't have a car, but cabs

can get you back and forth. It's also fairly pricey at $120.00 per night; consider it, however, as the

value is there for a short stay. But on to my visit....

A precisely 2:15 p.m. Peter met me in the Plant reception area, took me out to the delivery room, and set

me loose on the traditional self-conducted tour of the Plant. Major news for me, not having been through

since 1972, was that the sewing ladies had been moved! They are no longer in the main plant area but are

in a new section with the trim shop -- more light, more space, and (not noted by Sir John Harvey Jones)

greater productivity! (More on this fellow later.) Here I also noted that the battery fitting area for

the new 4-seaters has now been relocated to the rear (under the seats, just like the two-seaters. Too

bad if you need a boost -- just ask Bert McCabe.)

One of the highlights was seeing the new +4 in production and rows of the new M16 Multi-point engines

ready for assembly. This unit I coveted greatly, especially a 4-seater non-propane unit. These we can

get now in Kitchener Ontario, in Canada, and this guy is now officially in the new factory brochure. I

noted that the factory has about a 12-foot high pallet-sized stack of those; what a great price break

crafty Peter must have gotten on this order!

After a good tour seeing all the updates, and especially getting a photo of what I would call the rather

surrealistic wing storage room, it was time to buy some parts for me and for the Kingsfords and the

Laturnus's. For them I got some of their bits and pieces, but for me Lucas no longer makes the '72-

style instrument insert panels so I was out of luck; imagine going all the way over there, get their

parts, don't get mine! Now it was time to stop back to Peter Morgans office, just by the parts area.

Again in hindsight: comparing this approach to touring a factory engaged in car manufactureand that later

of my conducted tour of the Jaguar factory, the delightful casual ambiance of the whole site and

personnel is hard to beat.

Our discussion initially focussed on how the Sternes were doing back in B.C. To our mutual

disappointment I could not show him the tour tape with George and Lydia because of tape-recording

differences. Our next major topic was directed to the BBC production "The Trouble Shooter" that had a

recent feature by host Sir John Harvey Jones, a retired cracker-jack efficiency expert, on what he would

suggest to improve the production of Morgans. I was fortunate that one of my cousins had taped the show

for me to see. This tape I can now get changed over from P.A.L. to our NTSC systems, to this will come

along with me to California should anyone like to see the program first hand.

(Ed. note: in interests of space, I'm cutting some of Mike's article here; see the news article included

in this issue re the program. Mike didn't find out whether or not the Morgans were "putting on" Sir

John.)

It was now time to say goodbye and then diplomatically wait outside for my ride up to Coventry in

(whisper) a XK 140 Jag. This I thought I could pull off, but the owner, John Bridcutt, pulled in to the Factory parking lot just as Peter was leaving for the day. We again exchanged pleasantries but I'm not sure I'll ever be allowed back after that travesty!

This was my ride up to the Jaguar World Weekend event, and a word must be said about the run up. John

with his very original and very fine XK 140 did all the beautiful back roads at speeds never under 55 mph!!! What a run. This was a first-class event for those Morgan owners who have Jags, noting that no Jaguar owners have Morgans of course!

Page 9: owt - MOGNW Home

I had previously arranged to meet the Healeys, Roger who is the DONMOG Centre Secretary (chairperson) and

Christine, the MSCC Registrar, at Donington after the last Jaguar World Weekend event. The Donington

races were on and the second race was an all-Morgan championship race called the Mitibank Trucks Morgan

Sports Car Club Championship, with a starting grid of 28 race-prepared Morgans, and this was not a vintage event, either! [his was for real, just like the old days for North America: some trailered in,

some driven -- all looking great. Just consider: there were 26 Mogs of all types at this years

Vancouver All-Brits, and here was just a group for a race event. Thanks to John Bridcutt again, in his

capacity as Chief Paddock Marshall, I was able to watch this race from the pit crews rail and to photo

them in the under-cover pre-grid. This was a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me, to see this many units all

Morgans only -- in one race -- four classes .........

-- Class A: Modified Plus 8 (17 participants)

-- Class B: Modified Plus 8, 3.5 Litre cars (8)

-- Class C: Modified +4s and 4/4s and Standard +8s (11)

-- Class D: Standard +4s and 4/4s (2)

The standard 414s always came dead last and were lapped by the top-seeded Class As -- that was some

race!

Christine and Roger are certainly the very typical gung-ho Morgan owners, both very active in Club

affairs and just terrific hosts. It did take a while to ferret out that realities of their Morgan

ownership and commitment. The family car is a Scimitar and Roger uses the Morgan to get to work daily at

the Rolls Royce Airplane Engine works in the area. However, hidden away in the garage is a Plus S under

restoration, and their original pre-marriage 4/4 is in storage on the patio, so three in all!! (His 4/4

four-seater was a 2-seater he made into the 4-seater configuration, even doing his own quarter panels.

That's commitment to the Marque!)

Monaay was work time, school time, and travel time for me, so we bid adieu after a great English

breakfast. My time in the world of MUG was now over. Some observations on this part of the trip:

-- Peter: No matter what Sir John says, don't change it -- it ain't broke anyway.

-- Sir John: Please now take a look at the new MG production and note how far it has regressed from

the mass production of earlier years.

-- Roger: Get at least one more Morgan on the road by the end of 90.

-- Christine: Get Roger to build that office for you and the MSCC.

-- John Bridcutt: You have the prerequisite Jag ... now perhaps you should get a Morgan!

Peter Morgan at his desk, wondering if Powley is a typical MOG-NW member.
